28: Wedding Planning
"Then he promised he would at least come to your wedding," I said.
I took in Dahlia's completely puzzled and stunned expression. Her eyes were completely widened and her jaw dropped. She looked like a cartoon.
"When did your life become a soap opera?" she asked, shaking her head in disbelief.
I slightly laughed, "When has it not been a soap opera?" I challenged.
"Fair enough," she said. She stood up and began cleaning up her living room. My story was a long one, and she listened to every little detail.
"Can't believe how fucking weird that Ezra guy turned out to be," she said.
I bit my lip, "I mean, it was odd, yeah, but I'm sure his reaction was just a result of being shocked to see me, that's all," I said.
Dahlia shook her head, as she threw a pillow at me, "Oh, he was shocked, alright," she said.
"Hey, I kind of get it," I said, standing up, "I mean, I was shocked to see Varun, too."
Dahlia's cheekbones began rising, and she struggled to fight the smile that was appearing on her face.
"What?" I asked.
Dahlia brought her face to a neutral stance, "Nothing," she lied.
I raised my eyebrows, "How many times do we have to play these little games. I know you better than yourself, you're hiding something."
"Well," she said, dropping her shoulders, "It's just your single, he's single. You've both grown up, and matured, and you two would just look so freaking cute together."
"Dahlia!" I exclaimed.
If I'm being completely honest, I'd be lying if I didn't say I didn't think about it once or twice. He meant a lot to me. He held a distinct part of my heart, and he probably always will. It just wouldn't work, and I knew that.
I would never want to lose him again. Now that he was back into my life, starting a romantic relationship with him could just break that.
"What, tell me you haven't at least thought about," she said.
"I haven't!" I lied, "I- I just got him back into my life, I wouldn't want to do anything that made him leave."
Dahlia sighed, "If only there was a sure-fire way to keep him in your life forever," she said.
I furrowed my eyebrows, "Are you suggesting I marry him?" I asked her in disbelief.
Dahlia was acting ludicrous; she smiled, looking at the floor and then at me.
"We interacted once!" I exclaimed.
She began laughing, and I couldn't help, but laugh with her. She was a hopeless romantic, and she was just looking out for me; how could I be made at that?
"Who interacted once?" Ajit said, walking into the room.
I widened my eyes at Dahlia. She nodded her head, urging me to tell my brother about Varun. It was funny that my first instinct was to panic because I guess since college, I made it a point to never talk about Varun with Ajit. Of course, he was different now.
"I saw Varun when I visited Ezra's wedding," I said. God, that's a sentence I never thought I'd say. I especially never thought I would say it to Ajit. Telling Ajit that I went to Ezra's wedding would've scared the hell out of me if I was eighteen.
Ajit's eyes lit up, "No way, you saw Varun?" he asked, in disbelief.
I was a little shocked he completely didn't mention the Ezra's wedding thing.
"Yeah, she did, babe," Dahlia pitched in.
Ajit walked over to me, with a smile on his face, "Well, what did he say? What did you guys talk about? "
"We just caught up on our lives, and I actually invited him to your guys' wedding," I said.
Ajit raised his eyebrows, "Really?" he asked.
I nodded.
Dahlia immediately slammed her hand against her face, "oh my God, I forgot to tell you, we move the wedding to next month," she said.
They did what? How did they move the wedding up so soon? How would they prepare everything?
"Why would you guys do that?" I asked.
"We were trying to book the Gurdwara for our wedding this year, but for some reason all of them were booked for a year and a half. Somebody cancelled for next month, so I asked Ajit and your guys' mom, and we all agreed that we might as well, get married next month," she explained.
How did I miss such a big piece of information? How did Dahlia forget to tell me? I guess she was too wrapped up in my story.
"How are we supposed to put everything together before a month?" I asked.
For those of you that may not know, an Indian wedding was one that took a lot of effort and planning. The wedding wasn't just a one day event. There were multiple functions and parties that led up to the wedding day. After the wedding day, there's a party the next night. This makes Indian weddings a one week process.
Planning a one week process only a month before was unheard of. I knew I would have to be at the forefront of a lot of this planning, too, because not only was this my brother's wedding; it was my best friend's wedding, too.
"Oh no, oh no," I said.
Dahlia slightly laughed and I glared at her. She looked over at Ajit, and said, "Hey, she took it better than you thought."
These two were ridiculous. This was about to be the most stressful month of my life.
