27: Olivia Returns

"Do you need a ride back home?" Varun asked.

We were about to leave the ceremony. I had taken a cab here, and I planned to do the same thing. Then, it dawned on me, if I took Varun to Ajit's house, they could reunite.

"Would it be a bother?" I asked.

Varun raised his eyebrows, "When has it ever been a bother?" he said.

I nodded, and we began heading for the exit. "Tara!" a feminine voice exclaimed. I turned around, and noticed a beautiful girl walking over towards me. "Don't recognize me?" she asked.

It took me a second and then it all clicked, "Olivia?" I asked.

She nodded quickly, "Yeah!" she said, pulling me in for a hug.

Olivia and I had never been really close in high school or college. The only interactions we had were because of Ezra, and I remember kind of hating her. This was a girl that he went to prom with. None of that mattered obviously, anymore now, I just found it kind of funny.

"I didn't see you, here, earlier," I said.

She shook her head, "Really?" she asked, "I was Ezra's maid of honor."

Wow, how did I not see her? "Ezra's maid of honor?" I asked, wondering if she flubbed up her words.

"Well yeah," she said, "Honory gay best friend would be the title I preferred, but we went with maid of honor... even though, that's technically wrong, too if you think about it."

I laughed. I didn't know she was gay.

"It's great that you two managed to keep a friendship for so long," I said.

Olivia smiled, "How could I not? Ezra was the first person I came out to. He played the role as my prom date in front of my parents and the rest of the school, when in actuality, I ditched him the whole night to spend prom with my girlfriend," she said.

I looked over at Varun and he had an "O" expression with his mouth. He definitely remembered how hurt I was about the fact that Olivia and Ezra went to prom together.

Well, I was fucking stupid.

It was kind of hilarious that Varun threw that prom because of how hurt I was, and that hurt wasn't even validated.

Olivia quickly said, "Don't worry though, he didn't end up hating me. And, we stayed best friends because until I was ready to come out at the end of college, he kept it a big secret for me."

I looked over at Varun, who dropped his head and shook it. Things were piecing together in both of our minds. With my focus still on him, I shut my eyes tightly.

Olivia followed my gaze. "Oh," she said, with a big smirk on her face, "And I see you've brought someone here with you, too, today."

I smiled at her, "No, actually," I started.

Olivia stared at me in disbelief, with her large smirk still plastered on her face. I knew that there was no way she'd believe Varun and I could be here at the wedding together platonically. Instead of having to spend ages explaining it to her, and her probably still not believing it, I decided to go along with it.

"You're right," I said, grabbing Varun's hand, "Let's go, honey."

Varun stared down at me with a slight reddish tint on his cheeks. He softly held my hand. Olivia was giving me a "you go girl," look.

"It was nice seeing you, Olivia!" I said, as we walked out.

Varun was still holding my hand as we walked out. I couldn't help, but blush about the fact that he was reluctant to let go.

"Sorry, I had to just say that we were—" I said.

Varun smirked slightly, "No worries," he said.

When we reached his car, he let go of my hand, not before opening my door for me. When did he become such a gentleman? I sat in his car, and he did the same.

On the journey back, I decided to give him the address to Ajit and Dahlia's place instead of mine.

Halfway through the journey, Varun's phone began buzzing incessantly.

"Hey, could you answer that on speaker so I could drive?" Varun asked, handing me his phone.

"Sure," I said.

On the phone call, Varun's boss basically urged him to do an urgent task. Varun anxiously agreed and hung up.

I felt a sense of guilt overtake me, "I'm sorry, Varun, I should've just took the cab."

Varun kept his eyes on the road, "Don't ever be sorry about that," he said, sternly.

I just stared straight ahead; the GPS instructed Varun to turn left. "Actually, just go straight," I said.

Varun obliged, and then looked at me skeptically, "Why're we going against the GPS?" he asked.

"Straight," I said, again, "Uh, cause, I thought maybe it would be better if you just dropped me off at my apartment."

"Isn't that where we were going?" Varun asked, confused.

I sighed, "No, actually," I admitted, "We were going to go to Ajit and Dahlia's place, so you guys could reunite."

Varun raised his eyebrows, "Really? Wow, Tara, back at it again with the schemes," he teased.

I chuckled, "But, you're obviously busy today, so my apartment's fine," I said.

Varun shot his head towards me, and then back at the road, "You got your own place... since when?" he said, softly.

I smiled, "Yeah I did, a while back," I said. Man, younger Tara would be so proud of me.

Varun smiled, as he pulled over in front of the apartment complex. "Damn, I wish I had the time to come in," he said.

I sighed, "I know. I wish you did, too," I said.

Varun and I sat in his car, neither of us really wanting to end our day. "I'm glad I ran into you, today," he admitted,

That was sweet of him, "Yeah, me too," I said.

I paused for a minute. "Varun, please visit Ajit again, soon," I said.

Varun scanned around, "Er, I don't know, Tara," he said.

I was a bit puzzled by his reaction. Did him and Ajit not end on the best terms? I thought they just drifted apart?

"Did something happen between you and Ajit?" I asked.

Varun immediately shook his head, "No, nothing really, we just drifted apart. It's just so much went down with our whole fiasco, and maybe it'd be awkward."

I understood where he was coming from. If I thought Ajit was the same way he was when I was in college, I'd be scared to meet him again too. "He's changed a lot, it wouldn't be awkward," I assured.

"Er, I don't know," he hesitated.

"Was it awkward to see me again after all those years?" I asked.

"No... but," he started.

I could see how uncomfortable I was making Varun. I never wanted to push him into something that he wasn't ready to do. That could even hinder Ajit and Varun's future relationship.

"Okay, at least promise me one thing," I said.

He cautiously nodded, "What?" he asked.

"You'll come to their wedding, at least," I said.

Varun slightly looked around, before he exhaled and said, "I wouldn't miss it for the world."

A great big smile beamed on my face. That was enough for me.
