Chapter 13: In the grip of Spiders

Outside, she was doing her best not to be distracted by her internal struggles, as what she was doing outside was rather important. She was inspiring the mob to survive, take up arms, and fight against the invading spiders. It was not going well. So far she'd gotten the mob's attention, explained the situation, and was moving on to ordering some to get the guard, others to find Sun, Valkyrie, the heroes, the city's leadership, that sort of thing. Unfortunately, it turns out that disordered mobs tend towards irrational behavior when confronted with terror, so now Vienna grappled with the unruly, panic threatening to engulf the city in chaos entirely unrelated to the impending doom. She found that instead of following orders, they preferred fleeing the city, which didn't make any sense, mankind was strongest when standing together, looting, getting into fights, running off, and, in one particularly obnoxious case, lighting the owl's rest on fire.

Off in the distance, one group that ran away earlier catches sight of something, curious they look at the thing, step forwards, then straighten up, walking calmly away. Another, those throwing alcohol at the owl's rest to help it burn, stare curiously into the fires for a moment before calmly joining in listening to Vienna.

"You seem to be having some trouble here. perhaps I could help?" says a gently old woman sitting on the balcony. the same impossible woman from the office. There was movement in the still places where none could be found, and flickering in the corners and behind her eyes. the more perceptive members of the mob start looking around nervously, trying to catch gimps what never was. A deepest instinct awakening, the most primal place of their souls reminding them that they were prey.

As she looked to the night sky, its blackness full of the unseen black creatures, a glint of black chiton outlined her fear, the time was now, preparation over. looking back to the mob "they're here!" Vienna's urgent cry echoed through the mob, Her hope clung to the preparations made by the townsfolk as they turned as one, chattering with each other amicably, smiles on their faces, poised for the impending onslaught. Moments later, the whole city, the very gray stone of Iron Head quivered with the thunderous impact. BOOM. The first Gigaracnid arrived.

"Don't worry dearie! I'll take care of these." the impossible woman said reassuringly among earth shaking impacts, as she sat unmoving. Her unchanging smile clearly visible in the dark, features unshifting in torchlight.

looking up, a spider is heading straight for them. they've done all they can to prepare and now they need to survive. she grabs the telescope to fight with. it feels sturdy, made of brass, and even has a handle. BOOM! it arrives. Svenka bellows, the frigid air swirling around him whipping up bits of gutter water, turning it to snow. He charges straight at the thing.

The spidersilk parachute falling behind the spider landed directly on SvenKa, abruptly halting his charge, leaving Vienna alone to face the looming threat. Somehow less nervous now that the danger was tangible, she bellowed out her last nerves and charged as well. The abomination towered thirty feet tall, its legs spearing the ground in a chaotically deadly dance. Nearly skewered, Vienna dove left, the telescope smacking against the ground, her head colliding with the metal. Dazed but determined, she scrambled toward the fallen weapon, continuing her onslaught. The monstrous creature turned its massive body towards her, its red eyes skewering her soul. She swung, cracking the telescope with all her might against its face ineffectively. its armored exterior taking the blow without phasing it. In that moment that death loomed, a thrown axe embedded itself into the creature's eye, followed immediately by a wild figure dashing on all fours- SvenKa hurtled past her, devoid of any semblance of humanity, burrowing into the creature's carapace, as if pulled by that axe.

The spider was not unfazed. It cried out, the sound of metal grinding against stone, its wail of agony pierced the air as it stabbed into its own head to impale SvenKa. Tearing the small man out of itself, and flinging it's leg forward, slamming it into the ground. SvenKa at the end of it, his axe clattering feet from his grip. Uncaring at his flailing, the spider's leg remained firmly through his thigh, pinning him to the ground. Despite the hole in his leg, he scrabbled for the axe, growing more frantic and feral. Scratching and biting the chitinous thing, until his own leg gave way, ripping through the hole, converting leg into gore. Diving for it, the Spider's leg simply rose and fell again, piercing him through the back, through his heart.

Vienna held back the terror at seeing the Svenka's pierced body spasm and still, there wasn't time for it. She pressed it down and threw it into the well as she saw the obviously cursed axe lying nearby what was left of the ice immortal. The axe with the shifting runes, the one she really didn't want to look at as the sight of it caused whispers into her mind. Desperate and determined, she tore through revulsion and fear making her move. The moment her hand touched it, she found herself inside the office. She was already inside the office of course, but she's kinda forgotten to be terrified of the invisible monster in favor of the very tangible monster. And there was something climbing out of the well- a very wet and confusedly SvenKa flailing at the air. She really needed someone to explain the rules of this place. But this was not the time, she was seconds from death. But she was, once again, not in control of her body. Being the Delver really sucked. She watched her body act on its own volition, as it turned to SvenKa's body. SvenKa's flailing body- Still speared through the heart by a quickly freezing spider leg, and smashed it with supernatural strength, tearing every muscle she could name. Dropped the axe and, having regained control of her own body (again), promptly fell to the ground in shock. Her hand had frost bite. In the state she was in, it was quite a surprise that the pain hadn't wracked her mind. The spider, minus one leg and two eyes, stumbled. Someone left a series of bolts in it, and the townsfolk moved in while she was distracted, hitting it with wood chopping axes, brooms, cooking knives, pots and pans, a raw chicken, and other miscellaneous household goods. they moved without concern as they faced the wounded Gigaracnid. their demeanor betrayed no hint of fear. Instead, they chatted amicably,

As one man on a ladder attempted to install a clamp onto one spider leg, "Have you heard about old Mr. Jenkins and his new chicken coop?" he asked his neighbor, as he held the ladder still "I'm ecstatic at the prospect, I'm hoping that'll drive down the prices of eggs."

Meanwhile, the team of lumberjacks stood by, leaning on their axes. "I told my daughter she should visit more often," he remarked nonchalantly as one of their members clawed at his throat next to them, his body bloating and purpleing with poison. "Well, i suppose it's time we got back to it"

"Suppose so. It's tough work, but someone's gotta do it." They all chuckled as they approached the tailor to relieve them of their shift.
