The Orphan Facility

"Why are we doing this again?" Groaned a very annoyed Skeleton in an orange hoodie, as he followed closely behind his brother and his brothers nerdy fish friend.

"PAPYRUS! YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHY WE ARE DOING THIS! UNDYNE NEEDS OUR HELP REPAIRING THE ORPHAN FACILITY!! WE'VE BEEN OVER THIS!" The younger brother dressed in blue and silver armor explained, rather loudly. "ALL THE CLANS AGREED THAT IT HAD TO BE DONE!"

"Heh. Sorry Sans. I guess I wasn't paying attention when you explained it the first time." Papyrus replied, with a shrug.

"It's really, n-not as big of a deal as Sans is making it out to b-be, Papyrus, I just need more strength then my own. And since Alphys isn't available, The Q-queen suggested I ask you two to help me instead." Undyne explained. Papyrus nodded. Undyne wasn't exactly "head of the royal guard" material, so he understood why she needed their help. Though for what he was still unsure.

"What exactly are we looking at, Undyne? What needs to be repaired?" Papyrus asked.

"O-oh that's easy. The heater isn't working, and Asgore is having a lot of trouble k-keeping the orphan warm at night. Plus a few things are wrong with a few of the electronics there, so I'm fixing them up." Undyne explained. "I need you two to help out with the o-orphan while I work, just keep them occupied. Last time I was here, I learned that they can be quite a h-handful" Undyne laughed nervously. Papyrus raised his eye socket in confusion.

"Orphan? Or orphans?" Papyrus asked. He didn't want to have to deal with a dozen monster kids hanging on him all at once.

"Only one. S-she's very easy to look after, I promise." Undyne announced.

"ONLY ONE?! THEN WHY WOULD YOU NEED BOTH OF US?!" Sans exclaimed.

"Once she opens up to you, she can easily ware anyone out. B-believe me. I should know." Undyne explained.

"Don't tell me you're going to that scary place too!" Exclaimed a little monster kid to Sans and Papyrus. "I hear there's a really scary thing living there."

"Scary thing? W-what kind of scary thing?" Undyne asked, shakily. Papyrus roles his eye sockets.

"Well, I don't really know... Mom says it's a little demon..." The monster kid announced. Undynes eyes widened.

"D-d-demon? I've been working in a place with a d-demon?!" Undyne stuttered.

"Relax Undyne, I'm sure theres not really a demon in the orphan facility." Papyrus announced with a yawn.

"MWEH HEH HEH! FEAR NOT UNDYNE, FOR I, THE MAGNIFICENT SANS WILL PROTECT YOU FROM ANY THREAT!" Sans laughed. Undyne nodded and slowly continued toward the orphan facility. Papyrus sighed. What does that kid know anyway? He's probably never even seen a demon.

"Thank you for coming on such short notice, Undyne. We wouldn't have lasted another night." Asgore explained, holding open the door for Undyne and the others to enter the beat up, building.

"Of c-course, Asgore, I'm happy to help keep you and the little one warm. Speaking of which, I brought her a few f-friends to play with while I'm working in her room. Where is she?" Undyne asked, looking around.

"I haven't seen her since breakfast, she didn't even come when I called for lunch. I'm worried about her." Asgore explained. Undyne nodded.

"W-we can help look for her, before I start my repairs, if you'd like Asgore. I know how much you care about her." Undyne reasoned. Asgore nodded.

"That would be very much appreciated, Undyne. I'll start by looking in the attic, since that's where I've found her for the last two times that I lost her." Asgore explained and then rushed off up the stairs. "Tap! Tap! Where are you Tap?" Called Asgore, though it was muffled once he was up stairs.

"Tap!" Undyne called, with her hands cupped over her mouth. "T-tap! Are you here? Don't be shy, it's me! Undyne."

Papyrus and Sans looked at each other.

"Who names their kid Tap?" Papyrus mumbled.

"Tap? You in here?" Undyne asked, opening the door to the basement. There was a small noise in reply. Undyne grabbed a candle from the dresser by the doors opening and lit it then proceeded down a flight of stairs, with Sans and Papyrus close behind. When the three got to the bottom, they found a pile of blankets, and pillows, bunched up by a furnace in which a little girl, not much older then 7, sat. "O-oh here you are Tap. W-what are you doing down here? Asgore is very worried about you." Undyne asked, relived that she had found the missing child. Tap turned to face Undyne but held her arms in a hugging position. There in her arms were two little black kittens. Undyne smiled. "W-where did you find those?" Undyne asked softly. Tap shrugged and set the kittens down on the pillow closest to the furnace, where they purred happily. Tap stood up and turned and faced Undyne once more but took a step back in fear, seeing the two skeletons behind Undyne.

Tap was definitely not at all what Sans and Papyrus had expected. It's no wonder Tap was the last kid left. She's a human. And in the underground, no monster would even think about adopting a human. But she looked practicality harmless. Why would any monster be afraid of her?

Undyne saw the fear in Tap's face and followed Tap's gaze to see Sans and Papyrus. "O-oh. Don't worry Tap. This is Sans and Papyrus. T-they are my friends. They were helping me look for you." Undyne explained. Tap didn't budge. She seemed stunned. "T-tap?" Undyne asked nervously. Tap visibly gulped and took another, timid step, backwards. "Don't be afraid, Tap. They won't hurt you." Undyne reasoned. Just then Asgore burst in through the door and down the stairs.

"Oh thank goodness, you found Tap, She wasn't in any other room." Asgore explained, with a gasp. Tap, ran to Asgore's side and hid behind him. Asgore laughed. "It's okay my child. You are safe here. Nothing is going to harm you. I promise." Asgore announced to Tap. Tap shook with fear. And Asgore saw it and looked to Undyne. "Tell me you brought a puzzle book." Asgore announced with a pleading expression.

"L-luckily, I thought we'd run into a situation like this. I brought my last one for now. P-puzzles for adult monsters." Undyne explained, reaching into her satchel with all her tools and pulling it out for Asgore to see. Tap's face lit up, and her eyes glowed with excitement. It had been weeks since she had done puzzles! And when she did them, she always blasted right through them as if they were Junior Jumbles. Tap loved puzzles. Probably more then any monster in the entire underground.

"You always come prepared Undyne." Asgore stated, letting out a sigh of relief. Asgore turned to Tap. "Are you sure you can handle, Adult puzzles, Tap?" Asgore asked. Tap nodded eagerly. Asgore chuckled. "Well then, the table awaits you. I'll be up with the puzzles in a moment. Your lunch is still there, if you are hungry." Asgore explained. Tap nodded, and made her way up the stairs, with the brightest smile on her face.

Sans and Papyrus just stood there in shock for a few moments. Puzzles. Adult puzzles. This 7 year old human girl, was solving adult level monster puzzles.

"WOWIE! YOU DIDN'T TELL US THE ORPHAN WAS A HUMAN, UNDYNE!" Sans squealed. Undyne rubbed the back of her neck, embarrassed.

"I...I-I thought you wouldn't come if I told you she was a human. T-that little bit of information seems to drive all my volunteers away. S-she's harmless, I promise." Undyne explained. Asgore nodded.

"Tap has the biggest most thoughtful heart in the entire underground. You'll never meet a sweeter human." Asgore explained. Expecting some sort of backlash, Asgore tensed up. Typically when he said that line, to any monster, before actually meeting Tap, they would run away and never speak of the adoption again. Surprisingly, that only seemed to excite Sans, and Papyrus side nodded, as though he was willing to give Tap a chance. Asgore relaxed and smiled. So far, this had been the best reaction out of all of them.
