Getting to know Tap
After Asgore had found out that Tap had been taking care of two kittens, and a brief lunch, Tap was finally able to get her hands on the puzzle book. Asgore went out to find homes for the kittens while Undyne fixed the heater, and Sans and Papyrus kept and eye socket on Tap, who was blowing through the puzzles. Each puzzle was different, but Tap seemed to know each little trick, tip, and scheme for each puzzle. It blew Sans' mind.
"WOWIE HUMAN! YOU'RE REALLY GOOD AT PUZZLES!" Sans stated, as Tap turned yet another page, but jumped in her seat, startled by Sans loud voice. It had only been 20 minutes, and already Tap was almost done with the book. Undyne hadn't even started to take apart the heater. Mostly because she had to find the correct tools for the parts that needed to be replaced.
Soon, Tap finished the puzzle book and ran up to Undyne to have her check all the answers.
"T-tap, I can't look over your answers right now. You know what? I-I bet Sans would love to look over your puzzles for you. He's the loud one." Undyne explained. With a disappointed nod, Tap filled out of her room, and walked back down the stairs and resumed her seat at the table. Tap then slid the book to Sans and scooted her chair away from the skeletons. Confused at first, Sans looked at Tap then to the book then Tap again. Tap nodded to the book. Sans looked to Papyrus who looked just as confused as Sans at the gesture. Tap got down from her seat, grabbed a drawing pad and a pencil and drew a little ✅, then slid it to Papyrus and pointed to the book and Sans. Papyrus looked at the paper and nodded.
"Uh, bro, I think she wants you to check her answers for her." Papyrus stated. Tap nodded and bit her lip. Sans looked to Tap and smiled.
"YOU DO HUMAN?! YOU WANT ME TO CHECK YOUR PUZZLES FOR YOU?!" Sans squealed. Tap, snapped her hands over her ears and pinched her eyes shut. Papyrus saw this and placed a hand on Sans shoulder.
"Bro, take it down a notch." Papyrus explained, pointing to Tap, who's face was now covered, by her hands. Sans looked at Papyrus confused.
"WHAT EVER DO YOU MEAN BROTHER?!" Sans asked. That sent Tap backwards in her chair, which toppled over and nearly hit the ground. Luckily, Papyrus caught the chair and Tap, with his magic. Papyrus's eye glowed orange as he replaced the chair and then brought Tap to his lap, with his magic. Tap was scared out of her mind.
"Looks to me like she's very easily frightened by loud noises, bro." Papyrus explained, trying to calm Tap down. Tap gulped.
"OH! SO YOU'RE SAY-" Tap jetted forward, buried her face in Papyrus's orange hoodie and held on to Papyrus for dear life. Papyrus glared at Sans and stroked Taps head. Sans cleared his throat. "You're saying I should quiet down?" Sans asked in a low volume. Papyrus nodded. Tap shivered with fear and would not let go of Papyrus.
"Hey, kiddo, it's okay. Shh." Papyrus announced in a soft comforting voice. Tap shook her head "No" and continued to shiver in fear. Papyrus stood up and held Tap in his arms. "Hey, hey. It's alright Tap. It's okay. Calm down." Papyrus whispered.
"Oh no! Did I break the human? I didn't mean to! I'm sorry human!" Sans panicked. Tap took in a deep breath and started to calm down. Tap came up from Papyrus's hoodie a few moments later, her eyes puffy, and his hoodie tear stained. Tap looked up at Papyrus and closed her fist and rubbed it in around in a circle on her chest, making the sign "Sorry" in sign language, then bit her lip. Papyrus smirked at the gesture.
"Heh. Don't sweat it, kid." Papyrus announced, and then sat back down, with Tap in his lap. Tap wiped away what remanded of her tears and looked to Sans curiously. Sans let out a sigh and then opened the book and started correcting the puzzles... Though there really was no need to make any corrections, as Sans learned quickly. Meanwhile, Tap had gotten up and gotten her Morse code machine, and started tapping away at the letters letting Papyrus feel the symbols that represented letters, which formed words, that formed sentences. Papyrus picked it up very quickly. In no time Tap was asking Papyrus questions through her Morse code machine.
"Is Sans your only brother?" Tap asked through the Machine. Papyrus smiled.
"As a matter of fact, he is. And he's the coolest one, at that" Papyrus replied. Tap nodded. "I have a question for you. Why is your name Tap?" Papyrus asked. Tap stared at Papyrus, then typed,
"Your looking at the reason."
Papyrus side nodded. "Fair enough." Papyrus replied. Just then Asgore came in through the door. He saw that already, Tap had started "talking" to these new monsters and that she had already finished the puzzles and they were now being corrected. Asgore smiled.
"Maybe." Asgore mumbled. "Maybe."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After an hour or so, Tap had warmed up to both Sans and Papyrus. They had played some of her favorite games, including slap jack and tag. They were now on hide and seek, and Tap was, of course, winning. And both Papyrus and Sans seemed to be enjoying themselves.
"Human? Where are you?" Sans asked, peaking around just about every corner. Tap had been hiding in a cabinet under the sink behind a large box of trash bags for a little while now. Sans had checked there twice but hadn't seen her ether time, and was now on his third time around, now having found Papyrus. Again, Sans opened the cabinet, hoping that the insides might have possibly changed, but unfortunately, nothing had moved. Sans had just about closed the door for the third time, when Papyrus stopped it from closing and put his head through. After a moment, Papyrus came out of the cabinet cradling Tap, who was passed out. Sans laughed. "It's no wonder she didn't come when I called Olly-Olly-Oxen-Free." Sans announced. Papyrus nodded, and walked with Tap in his arms, to the rocking chair and started rocking back and forth with Tap. Soon Undyne had finished fixing the heater and came down stairs to tell Asgore. What she found made her grin. Tap was sleeping in Papyrus's arms, who was also passed out, in the rocking chair, and Sans was resting on the ground on one of the pillows from the basement, right next to Papyrus and Tap. Undyne smiled wider.
"I-I warned you." Undyne snickered. Undyne found Asgore and brought him to see Tap. And Asgore smiled too.
"You think that maybe...?" Asgore whispered to Undyne, while observing the the sweetest thing he's seen Tap do in a long time. Undyne nodded.
"B-but they might not think its a good idea." Undyne explained. Asgore nodded.
"We'll just have to change their minds then won't we?" Asgore asked with a soft chuckle. Undyne nodded.
"I-I think they'd be the perfect monsters to adopt Tap. She's never let anyone hold her so quickly." Undyne reasoned, quietly. Asgore nodded.
"And no other monster has even dared to come near Tap, let alone hold her. I think we've found the perfect place for Tap." Asgore replied.
"B-but how do we convince them about that?" Undyne asked. Asgore nodded to Tap. She was smiling. And Tap didn't smile unless she was genuinely happy about something.
"I'm thinking they already know. And if that smile isn't proof enough, I don't know what is." Asgore explained. The two separated and Undyne fixed up the T.v. So that they had all the Nabstabot channels, as apposed to just fuzzy grey screens that made white noise. Soon Undyne finished all the repairs and woke Papyrus up and Sans up.
"Are you t-two going to take her home?" Undyne snickered. Papyrus looked down to find Tap, smiling in her sleep, on his chest. Papyrus nuzzled Tap's little head, in hope of waking her up politely, but failed in waking her at all. Instead she only shifted her head to the right to make her position more comfortable. Papyrus looked to Sans and smirked.
"Hey. Kiddo. Wake up. Sans and I gotta go home." Papyrus whispered to Tap. Tap didn't move. Undyne snickered.
"Y-you're gonna have to try harder then that." Undyne explained. Papyrus heaved a sigh.
"Come on kid, we have to get home." Papyrus announced. Tap mumbled something, but, it wasn't loud enough to hear. "Tap. Come on. Wake up." Papyrus stated.
"Don't leave me here. Please." Tap whispered, extremely quietly. But Papyrus heard every word. And it broke his heart. Here in his arms was a little girl, living in some of the most unstable living conditions in the underground, begging not to be left alone. She was a broken little soul. Papyrus could sense it. Which is why she was so afraid of loud noises and new monsters. Whatever happened in the past, was extreme enough to break this 7 year olds soul to pieces. And Sans saw it too! He could tell she had been through a lot just by looking at her eyes. As bright blue as they are naturally, they don't reflect that same brightness that was typically in the eyes of all kids Tap's age. No. Tap's eyes where dulled by fear and sadness and pain. Papyrus looked down at Tap who's eyes were open, but were avoiding Papyrus and Sans. Papyrus looked to Sans. Sans looked to Papyrus with sad eyes. Taps Hp level reading was 0.5. Less then 1 hope is not healthy, for kids at 7 years old especially. Tap didn't have much Determination either. Tap then hugged Papyrus tightly. Then Tap got up and hugged Sans tightly. Finally, Tap hugged Undyne, and walked up stairs to her room, her shoulders slumped over. Asgore came out of the kitchen and thanked Undyne for her service, then turned to Sans and Papyrus.
"You know, Tap had never bonded so closely with anyone so quickly. She typically doesn't even like monsters touching her." Asgore told them. "I've never seen her so happy in her sleep either."
Papyrus looked to Sans, who had stars in his eyes. Papyrus knew they had to adopt Tap. He would never forgive himself if he just left Tap there.
"What happened to Tap?" Papyrus asked finally.
"Pardon?" Asgore asked, a little surprised by the question.
"Why is Tap so easily scared by loud noises and monsters she doesn't know?" Papyrus asked. Asgore looked to Undyne who looked back at him. Asgore then sighed.
"If I tell you... You must promise not to remind Tap. It hurts her very much, and she's very sensitive to the subject. Okay?" Asgore announced finally. Papyrus and Sans nodded slowly. "Well, it all started about... 3-4 years ago." Asgore started.
