Chapter 47: A Wound We Can't Heal.

Three years ago.

Jace's POV.

I don't even know what I'm doing at this point.

I'm supposed to be staying away from her and starting my brand new chapter but here I am, driving her home.

I glance over to her and I catch her hand wiping her cheeks as she stares out the window.

Shit.

"Are you crying? What'd I say?" I ask as I shift my eyes back to the dark road.

"Nothing, I'm not crying, I have something in my eye," her voice is hoarse like she's been crying a while.

"Hey, what'd I say?" I touch her shoulder.

"Nothing, I just realized that our relationship was just so... not meant to be, you know?"

"Yeah. freaky, right?" I tighten my grip on the steeling wheel.

"Hurtful." She says softly.

"Hurtful." I repeat in a whisper.

"Guess you should have this back," her hands reach behind her neck to take off the star necklace I gave her.

"No, Liv, you don't have to-"

"I know but I can't keep it, Jace, it'll never let me let you go," she takes it off and holds it out for me.

I know I have no choice but to take it, so I do.

I stare at it in my hand and I just chuckle to myself before slipping it into my front pocket.

Silence takes over between us, my head is spinning from all the alcohol and drugs but that doesn't seem to stop my heart from hurting so bad.

It hurts so fucking much and I don't know how long I'm going have to feel this way untill it gets better.

"Just promise me you'll be okay," I speak, eyes on the road.

"I'll be okay," her tone cracks.

"Me too," I whisper, staring at the windshield wipers as they swing back and forth.

"What did you like about me?" I ask randomly because I'm drunk and because I really want to know.

"You can really kiss," she laughs through her sobs, her answer makes me clench my jaw and glance out the window.

"I hate that you never even got to know the real me, you just liked the things I made you feel," I say.

"And you just liked my good girl facade," her tone sounds playful.

I turn my head to her and she smiles at me, I smile back, a genuine smile. I gape at her entire face in order to memorize what she looks like because after tonight, I'm probably never gonna see her again.

A car horn drags my attention back to the road, my eyes immediately get blinded by the light ahead, my hands jerk the steeling wheel to the side of the road on instinct, the tires underneath us screech and the car uplifts and flips over on itself three times before finally landing on its roof.

There's a high pitched noise in my ear and my world is spinning way too fast.

I'm upside down and I'm still strapped to my seat.

"Olivia?" I cough out as I flutter my eyes open.

I hear a car taking off, I'm guessing it was the car I almost crashed into.

Olivia is not moving or responding and I'm too weak and confused to reach over the button on my seatbelt and release myself.

I hear a car approach and my guess is the person came back but I'm proven wrong when I hear a familiar voice.

"Jace?!" Diego shouts out for me.

"Oh my God, are they dead?" That's Daisy.

"Call 911 it something!" Blair commands someone.

"No! No one calls the cops!" Diego warns.

My head begins to feel heavy due to my current position.

"Diego?" I manage to call.

"Jace?" His voice sounds closer, "You okay, man?" I hear the door open and then I'm released from the seatbelt. I land on the roof of the car, on the shattered glass.

I craw out of the car with Diego's help but my world is still spinning and I still don't know what is happening.

"Olivia, she's not moving," I say as I lay flat on the wet grass.

"Someone check on her," Diego says to the others as he tries to keep my eyes open and check for any injuries.

"Uh.. guys...." I hear Matt's voice trail with panic.

"What?" Asks Blair.

"I don't think she's breathing," Matt responds.

"What do you mean you don't think, is she or is she not breathing?" Shouts Diego.

"She's definitely not breathing," he responds.

I wanna ask who's not breathing but I can't move a muscle and everything around me keeps turning upside down.

"Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God," Daisy sounds like she's freaking out.

"She's dead?" Asks Blair in shock.

"Diego, Jace was driving and.. and he was shitfaced, bro, like really out of it, he might actually go to jail for this shit," Matt's freaking out too.

Why's everyone freaking out?

Who's dead?

Why am I not hearing Olivia's voice, why isn't she saying anything?

"Everyone just shut the fuck up!" Diego screams at them, "No one's going to jail," he says in a determined tone.

"But.. she's dead, man," Matt points out.

"But are you sure? Did you double check?" Asks Blair.

"Do you wanna double check? Blair?" Matt fires back.

"No, thank you,"

"C'mon, buddy," Diego is helping me up, another person comes to my other side and they walk me to another car.

Diego's car.

"Olivia is in the car, you have to get her, she wasn't responding, I think she's mad at me," I say to Diego as he gets me in the backseat of his car.

"Sure, we will, just sit tight okay?" He pats my shoulder, I nod slowly.

"Sit with him," he whispers to someone, Daisy gets in and sits with me, letting me rest my head on her shoulder.

"What are you doing?" Asks Daisy.

"And why are you taking your shirt off?" Asks Blair.

"We have to clean his fucking prints off the car," His voice starts to sound distant.

"Prints? As in fingerprints? We're cleaning fingerprints? Does that mean that-"

"Yes, Matt, we're saving our friend from going to prison," Blair cuts him off.

They're all screaming, it's making my head hurt.

"I think I'm going to be sick," Matt gags and then I hear vomiting noises.

"You okay, Jace?" Daisy whispers against my head.

"We were just talking and then the car just flipped," I respond, wincing in pain.

"It's okay," she assures me.

"Where is she? Is she coming?" I blink, looking around the car.

"Yes, Jace, she's coming," she sounds like she's about to cry.

"Hey, Daise? I don't feel so good," I tell her as I rest my head back on her shoulder and let sleep take over my senses.

**************

"I wanna talk to Jace!" Loud shouting knocks me out of my sleep.

I slowly open my eyes and take in my surrounding. I'm in bed but it's not my bed or any bed I've ever been in before.

Everything around me looks so luxurious.

I notice Daisy sitting in a chair by the window, looking lost in thought.

"What's going on?" I prop on my elbows. She turns her head to me and sighs.

"It's Cassandra, she's being a bitch," she responds.

"Why?" I ask, "Where am I?" I look around again.

"We kinda crashed at her beach house last night so we had to tell her what happened but now she's here commanding that we turn ourselves in," she explains but I don't understand any of it.

"Turn ourselves in?" I furrow my brows in confusion.

"Shit, you don't remember last night?" She stands up and saunters towards me.

I move to sit on the edge of the bed and my body feels sore everywhere, like I've been lifting heavy shit for a all week straight.

I force myself to remember the events of last night and the car crash is actually the first thing I remember.

"Oh, fuck," I widen my eyes up at Daisy, "Where's Olivia?" I look around the place one more time.

"Jace..."

"Is she okay? Did she get hurt?" I bring myself to my feet, stepping closer to her for answers.

"Jace, she's not here," a tear escapes her eye.

"What? What do you mean? Where is she?" I demand.

"Jace?!" Cass bursts through the bedroom door.

"Cass," I walk to her at a hurried pace, "Where's Olivia?" I ask her.

"Oh, fuck you, like you don't know," she shoves my chest.

"What?" I'm confused.

"How can you do that? Leave her out there like that," she shoves me again as Diego, Matt and Blair walk into the room.

Leave her out there?

I don't get it at first but then I remember being pulled out of the car by Diego.

"What. Did. You. Do?" I seethe at him.

"I took care of it," he responds calmly.

"You took care of it?" I try to go at him but Matt stands in front of me, "Of what?" I glare at him.

Everyone goes quiet, they all look at each other and guilt is written all over their faces.

I look at Cass for answers cause clearly, they are not gonna talk.

"He extracted you from the scene and made it look like Olivia was the one driving," she informs me, "All by herself," she adds.

"Please tell me you didn't," I shake my head at Diego.

"She wasn't breathing, man, she died on the spot," he says and my heart slams against my chest.

"She didn't die on the spot, you fucking morons, she's still alive," says Cass.

"Really? Is she okay?" I ask.

"Yeah but she's in a pretty bad condition, she can't seem to remember who she is or anyone else for that matter," she tells me.

"I have to go and see her," I announce, searching the room for my shoes.

"And the cops will there, ready to put you in handcuffs," Diego's words make me pause.

I didn't think about that.

"Shut the fuck up, Diego," Cass snaps at him.

"You shut the fuck up, bitch, where'd you even come from?" He spits back.

"I'm not doing this with you, c'mon, Jace, I'll drive you to the hospital," Cass offers.

I hesitate.

"Except, he ain't going anywhere," Diego says to Cass.

"You can't tell him what to do," she shakes her head to him.

"Neither can you?" he cocks his head.

"Jace?" She looks at me for an answer.

I don't have one.

"Don't you get it, you dumb bitch? A girl's dying in the hospital, He goes down, we all go down," Diego points out.

"No one's going down, Olivia's gonna live and you guys will probably end up getting something stupidly simple like community work," she says.

"Oh, says the spoiled rich girl that's never been busted for shit her whole life because her daddy has good connections," Diego muses.

"I swear to God, I'm about to go bat shit crazy on this asshole," she shuts her eyes and breathes through her nose.

"Go for it," Diego flies his hands in the air.

"So what? You want to hide out here and hope Olivia doesn't get her memory back and mention his name?" She asks them while pointing at me.

"She won't mention him, trust me," Diego responds like he knows that's a fact.

"And uh... all of you are good with that? You're all hoping that this girl doesn't get her memory back?" She asks the rest of us.

"I really don't wanna go to jail," says Matt.

"Me too," Daisy is still crying.

"Blair?" She shifts her eyes to her friend.

Blair looks at the floor in shame.

"Diego's right, you will never know what it's like to not be a billionaire's favorite child," says Blair.

"You did not just say that to me," she looks hurt by Blair's words.

"Has no one ever told you that?" Diego narrows his eyes at Cass.

"Let's go," Cass orders me.

"Remember when you promised your father that you weren't gonna get arrested again? Or when that cop promised us that we were not going to get away with anything else ever again? Think about that before you walk out of that door," Diego reminds me before I even get the chance to take a step forward.

Cass begins to shake her head when she notices the look on my face.

"Jace? Please, don't do this," she pleads with me.

"I could lose everything," I say.

"She's your girl, remember? You love her, remember?" She reminds me and yes I do remember, I really wish I didn't though.

"I can't do this to my parents, Cass, I'm finally making them proud with this photography thing and I just can't disappoint them again," I run a hand through my fuzzy hair.

"You just made that decision? Just now?" She asks in shock.

"Yeah, now you gotta make a decision too, princess," Diego cuts in, "are you or are you not gonna rat?" He asks her.

"And what if I say I will, Diego, what are you gonna do?" She squints her eyes and scowls at him.

"Nothing, sweetheart, you're a billionaire's daughter, we're just fugitives," he says then looks at everyone else, "what? Too soon?" He asks us.

"Ratting on you would be like making it easy for all of you," she says before taking a few steps towards me and looking directly into my eyes with so much hate. "I want this to eat you up wherever you'll go from here, I want it to keep you up at night and have you looking over your shoulder every second, fearing the worst and I hope that girl finds the happiness she was seeking for, I really do and I hope the universe doesn't give you a third chance cause you know what, Jace? You blew your second chance before it even began," she tells me.

"Cass.."

"Shame on all of you," she turns around and walks towards the door, "And get the fuck out of my house! Now!" She slams the door after her and stomps her feet as she descends the stairs.

My finger grip my hair and I start freaking out.

I can't breathe properly, I can't think straight and everything hurts. Physically and emotionally.

"Please tell me to turn myself in," I say to no one in particular.

"I'm not that kind of friend," Diego responds.

"I know but I really need you to be that kind of friend right now," I continue pacing.

"Oh for fucks sake Jace, you don't need someone else to tell you how to act, Cass is right, this will be a wound we can't heal and we're never gonna look at each other in the eyes ever again," says Blair.

"What?" Diego looks at her.

"You heard me," she rolls her eyes.

"I heard you but what do you mean?"

"I mean we're over, I don't think I can be someone who can cover up a murder as quickly as you did," she tells him.

"But she didn't die," he laughs nervously.

"You didn't know that until twenty minutes ago and honestly, in my opinion, a part of Olivia Conner did die on that road last night, that girl will never be the same after that accident, especially after she finds out about what we all did, we left her to die. Do you guys get how fucked up that is?" She looks amongst us.

"Blair.." Diego tries to touch her.

"No, Diego, just no," she pushes his hand away and walks out of the room.

He just lost the one thing he gives a shit about. Karma's a bitch.

I've made some pretty bad decisions in my life but this one? This one will escort me to my grave.
