Chapter 43: Scheming
Present Day.
Olivia's POV.
A part of me doesn't want to but it has to be done.
I have to find out what Jace is hiding. Now or never.
The plan was to text Cassandra on social media but Myra suggested something easier.
If Jace dated Cassandra in highschool and is still hung up on her then he probably still has her number, Jace trusts Myra with his devices so she's the right girl for the job.
The new plan is for me to distract Jace while Myra "borrows" his phone and steals her phone number.
Easy. I think.
The only problem is that Jace has been nothing but sweet to me for these past few weeks, he takes me out on dates, photographs me because I'm the prettiest girl he's ever seen, he texts me first thing in the morning even though we only live a few feet from each other and he supports me and makes me feel beautiful.
I don't know about Olivia one but no one's ever made me feel like that before, he makes me happy.
But then again, deep down, I feel like it's too good to be true.
Whatever it is that he's hiding from me, it's going to change everything.
"What are you thinking about?" He speaks, his deep sexy voice vibrating his chest, I turn my head on his chest to look up at him.
"I'm watching," I turn my face back to his laptop.
"No, you're not," he laughs, I sit up, bringing all my attention to him.
"Jace?"
"Olivia?"
"About this... situationship, is it just about the sex?" I ask him.
He smiles at me, like my question is quite amusing, "No, Olivia, it's not just about the sex, you know it isn't." He tells me.
I do know that, I actually don't even remember the last time we had sex but I still needed to hear it from him.
I open my mouth to respond but my phone chimes on his bed, my eyes dart down to the screen.
It's a wink emoji from Myra.
I guess that's my cue.
"The girls need me," I grab my phone and start climbing out of bed.
"Okay, you wanna go for a walk later?" He asks.
"What are we, sixty?" I slip into my sneakers.
"Ha ha, funny, c'mon, we can bring that dog you like," he suggests, I smile.
"Now I'm sold, see you then," I kiss him on the lips before making my way out of the apartment.
I've never been so afraid of walking into my own apartment the way I am right now.
The guy across the hall has been nothing but a mystery since the first day I met him but this is it, this is the day I find out the truth.
Fuck! Why couldn't this be a girl meets boy and they live happily ever after kind of thing? Why does it have to be so fucking complicated?
I finally find the courage to open my door and walk in, Myra and Izzy are in the living room, talking but they both go silent when they notice me.
"So?" I ask, feeling something crawling up my throat.
"I stole two numbers," she tells me.
"She has two numbers?" I squint my eyes in confusion.
"No, the other one belongs to a guy named Diego," she says.
"Who the hell is that and why is his number important?" I ask.
"Remember when I told you about the high school pictures on jace's laptop?" She questions.
"Yeah?"
"Diego was almost in every picture and video, they seemed pretty close so I figured maybe his number might come in handy just in case we don't get anything from Cassandra," she explains.
God, this feels too serious.
"Okay," I clear my throat, trying not to look so nervous.
Myra extends the paper where she wrote the two numbers with their respective names.
I take it, pulling out my phone to dial Cassandra's number.
"Wait, what if we start with the best friend?" Izzy interrupts me, Myra nods in agreement.
"Why?" I ask.
"I don't know, I just feel like we should start with him," She shrugs.
"Okay, fuck it, let's do it," I dial the dude's number first then press the phone to my ear.
"It's ringing," I announce, biting the inside of my lip.
"Ask all the right questions," Myra whispers to me.
"Hello?" A guy's voice speaks into my ear and I immediately turn into a shaking wreck.
"Hey, uhm, Diego?" I stammer.
The other line goes quiet, so quiet that I end up thinking that maybe he hung up on me or something.
"Olivia?" He breathes my name.
I widen my eyes in shock at my friends before pulling the phone from my ear and putting it on loud speaker.
"Yeah, it's Olivia," I respond, sounding unassure of myself.
Am I the Olivia that he thinks he's talking to?
"What the fuck?" Myra mouths to me, I shrug.
"Oh my God," This so called Diego person sounds frightened at the sound of my voice.
At this point, I know I have to play it smart, if this person really knows who I am then I have to talk like I know what he knows, like I got my memory back.
"Surprised?" I force my voice to sound straightforward.
"No, actually, I always knew this day would come, where did you get my number?" He asks, my eyes shift to my friends for help, they both shake their heads, telling me not to tell him.
"Does it matter?" I respond.
"Have you talked to Jace, lately? He doesn't answer any of my calls," he says.
My heart sinks at the mention of jace's name.
"Why not?" I ask and I hear him huff out a breath.
"It wasn't his fault, Olivia, he really didn't want to, I kinda talked him into it, I haven't been the same since that night, Liv, Blair broke up with me right afterwards and I haven't heard from her ever since and Jace won't pick up my calls or visit home cause it reminds him of that night," he sounds like he's... crying?
"What did you do to me?" I ask without thinking, his silence makes me realize that I just blew my cover.
"You haven't gotten your memory back." He says in a whisper, "Shit!" He immediately ends the call.
I bet he threw his cell phone to the ground and stomped on it till it broke too.
Myra and Izzy look speechless and confused but I'm not, I'm not confused by that conversation, it has actually helped me figure out that I'm probably sleeping with the wrong person.
Without saying a word, I dial my last hope and I wait for her to pick up.
"I usually don't pick up strange numbers, you better be important," That voice, I recognize that voice.
"Hey, Cassandra, it's Olivia," this time, I expect the person on the other line to know exactly who I am.
"As in... Olivia Conner?" She gives off the same surprised tone Diego gave.
"Yeah," I utter.
"Oh my God," she even says the same thing he said.
"Diego said something similar," I tell her.
"After what they did to you? I figured he would be saying something more than that," she says.
She knows.
She knows about what happened, of course she knows.
"What did they do?" I ask desperately.
"I see you haven't gotten your memory back," she notices, I sigh.
"I haven't but you're gonna tell me, I'm sick of this shit, okay? just tell me what they fucking did!" I snap.
"Have you talked to Jace?" She asks calmly.
"You mean the guy across the hall who I happen to be fucking, who also just turned out to be a massive liar?" I ask sarcastically, "Well, let's just say I tried to crack him,"
"He's fucking you?" She raises her tone, "After everything that happened? Jesus fucking christ, what is wrong with that guy?"
"What did he do?" My tone breaks and tears form in my eyes.
"Okay, I'll tell you everything," she says.
"Thank you," I wipe the tears from my eyes.
"But it has to be in person," she says in a soft tone.
"I'm a college student, I don't have money for bus fair, that's why I called you," I joke, Myra and Izzy smile at me.
"I'll buy you a plane ticket to Manhattan first thing tomorrow and I'll have someone pick you up from the airport, I'll tell you everything you wanna know, just not over the phone, okay?"
"Okay," I nod like she can see me.
"Just stay away from him, if you will?"
Well that's gonna be hard considering the fact that I'm supposed to walk a dog with him later today and I don't want him to know that I'm busy scheming behind his back.
"I will," I lie for what it's worth.
We both hang up and I face my friends.
"Well, ladies, I guess I'm going to New York,"
