Chapter 31- Warmth of the Heart
"Abbey ruk. Main bol raha hun na ruk jaa"
"Bus waale bhaiyya, ruk jaiyye"
Naina and Sameer's voices echoed from the empty bus stop as they frantically ran behind it, while the bus left from there in full speed, leaving clouds of dust behind-
"Saala yeh khatara itna tezz bhagti hai kabhi pata hi nahi chala" Sameer said, coughing from the smoke
"Woh khatara hamari aakhri sawari thi Mumbai jaane ke liye. Kya karenge ab?" Naina said, sitting down on a broken cement post in the bus stand
"Ab iss veeran si jagah mein kar bhi kya sakte hai? Chalo tumhare uss school mein chalte hai. Shayad kuch help mil jaye" Sameer said, picking up their bags as they started their journey back to the village.
The school fortunately had a spare room for visiting teachers but it was sparsely furnished, much to the chagrin of its new inhabitants
"Yeh koi room hai? Jahan teachers ko devta maana jaata hai wahin unke liye aise nark-jaise rooms? Ek kaam karte, woh jo bhains ka tabela hai na wahin kahin sula dete. Yeh room bana ke kharcha ho gaya lagta hai" Sameer said vehemently as he looked at the fractured table hanging on its three legs and the single bed with a mattress which looked like someone had clawed his way through it
"Bhaisahab. Bhadak kyun rahe hai? Shukr kijiye hamare paas yeh room tha. Warna uss bhains ke tablele mein hi sona padta aapko" the man showing the room smirked as he looked at the couple
"Waise yeh aapke pati hai kya masterni ji?" He queried further sensing the absence of any signs of a married woman in Naina
"Kyun? Humare upar kahin stamp laga hua rahega ki hum married hai ki nahi?" Sameer said angrily, full in a mood for a fight.
"Na- Haan. Pati hi hain. Aap please inki baaton ka bura mat maniye. Aise hi thode bhadkeele kism ke insaan hai yeh. Aap bas yeh kamra kal tak ke liye hume de dijiye" Naina motioned to Sameer to keep quiet as Sameer retreated to a corner, sulking

A pair of hands sneaked in from behind, wrapping him in its warmth as Sameer stood there, arms crossed, his anger still streaking-
"Toh main humesha gussa karta hun haan?Baat baat pe bhadak jaata hun.."
"Woh toh tum ho. Ab dekho na. Itne dinon baad akele rehne ka mauka mila hai aur kaise gubbare ki tarah muh fulaye baithe ho" Naina said, tightening her hug further
"Acha." Sameer said, removing her arms, pushing her lightly to the mattress, as he jumped beside her, stroking her cheek-
"Tum toh gussa the na-"
"Tum pe thodi na tha. Yeh toh iss room ne poora mood kharab kar diya tha aur upar se uss aadmi ne humare rishte ke baare mein-" he said, tracing her finger where the ring rested, his warm breath tickling her neck
"Doosre kya bolte hai usse mujhe koi fark nahi padta. Aur ab toh humari sagai bhi ho gayi hai" Naina teased him with his own words as she playfully tickled him
"Naina. Stop it. Mujhe bilkul hassi nahi aati" Sameer said dryly as Naina discovered he was not at all ticklish
"Isse yaad aaya. Ghar mein ek phone kar deti hoon. Bekaar mein sab pareshan ho rahe honge" Naina said, getting up
"Haan. Tumhare papa toh ghar sar pe utha lenge"
"Aisa kuch bhi nahi hai. Unhe mere liye chinta tab tak hai jab tak woh mujhe vida nahi kar dete. Bas ek bojh samajhte hai woh..bachpan se. Aaj bhi cheezein kuch khaas badli nahi hai" Naina said, her vulnerability showing through her words
"Mujhe lagta hai woh sachme tumhari bohot fikr karte hai."
"Tumhe kaise pata?" Naina asked curiously
"Bas pata hai. Aankhein parh leta hoon na main" Sameer said, averting his eyes, not mentioning about the exchange which happened with her father when she was inside the bus
"Tab chalo. Mere aankhon ke doctor. Phone kar lein?" Naina said, shaking her head, unbelievably

Her father reprimanded her for being so careless as to miss the bus as she expected. She kept the phone down with 'I-was-right' look-
"Theek hai. Theek hai. Main galat tha aur tum sahi. Ab chalein?"
They reached the room and now they faced the dilemma of sleeping arrangements. Although they'd lived together in an apartment, they never slept in a single room, which was a breach of limits for them- for Naina mostly-
"Tum upar so jao. Main neeche so jaata hun" Sameer said, looking at the dusty floor with a grimace-
"Chuhon ka dinner naa ban jaun idhar bas-" he thought, spreading a sheet on the floor
"Nahi. Tum upar chale jao. Main neeche aa jaati hun" Naina said, coming beside him in a swift motion and ordered him to sleep on the bed
"Tumhare jo itne se baal hai woh bhi chuhe kha jayenge. Tum upar hi so jao" Sameer said, chuckling
"Kya. Itne bhi chote nahi hai mere baal" Naina said, bringing her hair to the front, checking it's length
The expanse of skin exposed to him made him jittery for a while as his fingers automatically went there, tracing her collar-bone, and they seemed to trail southwards, leaving goosebumps on the way. He yanked away the clip holding her hair, the clattering sound resonating through the chilly silence clamoured by the heavy breathing of its inhabitants. He weaved his fingers through her waves as he placed a kiss on the pulsating nerve at the juncture of her neck and felt her arch, feeling her fist her hands to control herself-
"Main upar so jaati hun" Naina said, clambering up the bed, trying to curtail the desire that flared between them-
"Haan. Yahi theek rahega" Sameer said, calming himself down, pulling his jacket closer as a strange chill came over him, as soon as he was bereft of the warmth supplied to him few minutes ago

Naina tossed restlessly to the other side, sleep evading her long ago when she saw Sameer shivering in his sleep
"Sameer" she went down to shake him as he seemed to be cold
As if on an impulse, Sameer wrapped his arms around her, his head resting on her chest, devouring all the warmth he could take. He snuggled further into her, delving into forbidden depths, oblivious to the one burning up, inflamed by his touches-
A gust of air slammed the creaking window shut in a sudden, as Sameer's eyes flew open, slowly becoming aware of the position they were in-
"I'm sorry. Really sorry" Sameer said, lifting his head up when Naina hugged him, squeezing himself into her more-
"Aise hi raho. Thand nahi lagegi"
He never felt warmer more than that night ever since.

Back home, Rakesh was cursing the bus and the bad state of transport in the country for his daughter not coming home that night.
"Humare desh ka kuch nahi ho sakta. Aur ek Naina bhi hai, time se pehle stand pe hona chahiye tha na-"
He said as he picked up her things which she'd thrown around her room when his feet struck on something-
"Dekho toh isse. Itni mehengi diary ko aise hi phenk diya hai-" he started, when a piece of paper slipped out of it as he dusted it
"Koi court ka paper lagta hai" If Rakesh was surprised by the stamp, he was burning in anger when he'd finished reading the whole document, his hands bunching up the paper, eyes blazing
