Chapter 7

Sera walked carefully through the grand halls of the mansion, her every step slow and cautious, as if the floor beneath her might betray her at any moment. Her body was stiff from the injuries she had suffered and every small movement reminded her of the pain that had settled deep in her bones. Getting from one room to another was exhausting, but she had learned to endure it.

The mansion was beautiful high ceilings, sparkling chandeliers and expensive marble floors that screamed wealth. But to Sera, it felt more like a prison than a home. No matter how grand the surroundings were, they couldn't hide the heavy sense of loneliness and fear that followed her everywhere. Dimitri mansion was full of riches, but it was also full of secrets and sooner or later, those secrets would catch up to both of them.

She barely understood his world beyond the cruelty he had shown her. She didn’t know how long she would be kept here or what more he had planned for her. Each day stretched on endlessly, filled with nothing but uncertainty. Dimitri’s moods were unpredictable, and that made everything worse. Never knowing what to expect, never knowing if today would be better or worse than the last it was enough to make her chest feel tight with anxiety.

She stepped into the kitchen, her hands moving on their own as she started preparing breakfast, just as she had been told to do. The house was quiet, except for the occasional sound of footsteps and the low murmurs of Dimitri men. They never spoke to her, but she could feel their eyes watching, always watching. Cold, emotionless stares that reminded her exactly why she was here her brother debt had led her straight into this nightmare.

At the counter, Elena was chopping vegetables for the morning meal. The older woman had been kind to Sera when she first arrived, offering small smiles, sometimes even helping her when she didn’t have to. But over time, that kindness had faded. Sera could feel the distance growing between them, as if Elena was afraid of being too close, afraid of drawing unwanted attention.

"How are you feeling?" Elena asked, her voice quiet, almost hesitant, as if speaking too loudly might bring trouble.

Sera forced a small smile, though it didn’t quite reach her eyes. "I’m fine," she said, even though they both knew it was a lie. How could she be fine? She had spent too many nights shivering in the cold, her body aching from wounds that hadn’t fully healed. But showing weakness wouldn’t help her. In a house like this, where fear ruled over everything, the last thing she wanted was for anyone to pity her.

Elena studied her for a moment, but Sera quickly turned her attention back to the task at hand, avoiding her gaze. She didn’t want to appear vulnerable. Not again.

"Stay strong," Elena murmured as she returned to her work.

Sera said nothing, but the words lingered in her mind. Stay strong. It was becoming harder to believe that she could.

The hours passed slowly. Dimitri had been absent for most of the morning, but she knew it wouldn’t be long before he returned. There was always something in the air when he was around a charged, tense atmosphere that made her uneasy. Every time he entered the room, the very space seemed to shrink, as if the walls themselves knew who was in charge.

Sera had learned that Dimitri temper was unpredictable and she had also learned not to speak unless spoken to. It didn’t matter what he said or how he acted she was always on edge. But today felt different. A problem was coming, she could feel it. Something in the air hinted that Dimitri was close and it made her heart race.

Right on cue, the door to the kitchen swung open and there he was tall, dark and impossible to ignore. His sharp eyes locked onto hers and for a moment, Sera felt the weight of his gaze pressing down on her. Cold. Unrelenting. As if he could see right through her.

The whole room seemed to shift the second he stepped inside. His presence was heavy, suffocating, like a dark cloud settling over everything. Sera body tensed, and before she could stop herself, she took a small step back. It wasn’t much, barely noticeable, but she knew he saw it. He always noticed everything.

She didn’t have to look too hard to see the darkness in his eyes. It was always there, simmering beneath the surface, like a storm waiting to break loose.

"Sera," he said her name with that cold, controlled tone she had come to know too well. "Come with me."

His words weren’t a request. They were an order.

Sera heart skipped a beat as she glanced at Elena. The maid face had gone pale and she looked away, not daring to intervene. Sera stood, her legs wobbly beneath her and followed Dimitri out of the room.

They walked down the grand corridor in silence. The walls seemed to close in on her, suffocating her with the weight of his presence. He didn't say a word as they passed through the ornate hallways, but Sera could feel his eyes on her the entire time. It was as if he were studying her, as if trying to find something in her something beyond the fragile flower girl who had been forced into his world.

Dimitri stopped in front of a large, dark wooden door, one she hadn't been through before. He opened it with a flick of his wrist and Sera stepped inside at his command.

The room was dimly lit, filled with heavy shadows that made the space feel even more foreboding. The scent of leather and tobacco lingered in the air, mingling with the scent of something more sinister.

Sera pulse quickened as she looked around. The room seemed to have an aura of danger around it. It felt like a place where decisions were made decisions that altered the course of lives.

Dimitri closed the door behind them and locked it. She turned to face him, but her heart sank when she saw the expression on his face. There was something different about him today. Something cold, calculated. It made her stomach churn.

"You’ve been disobedient," he said in a low voice, his eyes narrowing. "You think I’ve been kind, but you’ve been testing my patience."

Sera swallowed hard. She had no idea what he meant, but she could feel the tension rising between them. She didn’t know what he would do, but she feared that it wouldn’t be good.

"I—" She started, but her voice faltered. She had learned long ago not to speak unless spoken to, but the fear in her chest was growing unbearable.

Dimitri took a step closer to her, his eyes never leaving hers. "You think you can defy me, don’t you?" he asked, his voice dripping with menace.

Her heart hammered in her chest. She was frozen, unable to move. She could feel the air around them thickening, like a storm ready to break.

Before she could respond, Dimitri stepped closer, reaching out to grasp her wrist with a force that sent a jolt of pain through her body. She gasped, but he didn't let go. His grip was unyielding.

"Sera," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "You're mine now. Whether you like it or not."

She didn’t reply. Her mind raced, trying to make sense of what was happening. She was trapped, stuck in a world she didn’t belong to. A world where every word she spoke, every action she took, could lead to her downfall.

And she was afraid.

Dimitri eyes softened just a fraction as he studied her. For a moment, Sera saw something different in him. Something unexpected. But it was fleeting, disappearing as quickly as it had come. His expression hardened again, and he released her wrist.

"Go back to your room," he ordered, his voice devoid of emotion. "And remember your place."

Sera nodded, relief flooding through her. But as she turned to leave, she couldn’t shake the feeling that things were only going to get worse from here.

As she stepped back into the hallway, she glanced over her shoulder, but Dimitri had already disappeared behind the closed door.

She knew, deep down, that her life would never be the same again.
