Chapter-3: Interview
Opportunities are like doors; sometimes you have to step through them before you realize where they lead.
The sun peeked through the blinds, casting stripes of soft light across Manik's room. He rose early, his routine precise and swift as he dressed in a sharp charcoal-gray suit, adjusting his cufflinks in the mirror with practiced ease. His gaze was focused, reflecting the intensity and discipline he carried into every part of his life.
After a quick breakfast with his parents, Raj and Neyonika, filled with the usual warmth and light-hearted exchanges, he grabbed his briefcase and headed out the door. The familiar drive to Malhotra Industries felt different today, tinged with the knowledge that significant changes were on the horizon. His assistant, Tanya, would soon be leaving, and he'd need a new personal secretary-someone capable of managing his demanding schedule and understanding the intricacies of his work.
Upon arriving at the office, Manik stepped out of his car and strode purposefully toward the sleek glass doors of Malhotra Industries, his movements confident and assured. As he entered, staff members greeted him with respectful nods and polite smiles. The air was thick with the usual morning hustle, but it seemed to quiet slightly as he passed, his presence a commanding one.
He was barely settled at his desk when Tanya knocked lightly on the door, stepping in with a tablet in hand. "Good morning, Mr. Malhotra," she greeted him.
"Morning, Miss Tanya," he replied, giving her a nod. "So, when is the interview for the personal secretary position scheduled?"
"It's scheduled for tomorrow, Friday," she replied, swiping across her tablet to pull up the details. "I've shortlisted candidates and arranged for back-to-back interviews in the morning. I'll also be wrapping up my responsibilities and handing over all necessary files to the new secretary."
Manik gave a thoughtful nod. "Good. And make sure all the pending reports are submitted to me before you leave. I don't want any loose ends."
"Of course, sir," she replied, jotting a quick note on her tablet. "Your schedule for today is fairly packed, though. First up, you have a meeting with the marketing team to review next quarter's strategies. After that, there's a conference call with the overseas clients regarding the South-East Asia project."
Manik leaned back in his chair, considering the day's demands. "Sounds like a full day," he murmured, then looked back at her. "All right. Let's get started."
The marketing team was already assembled in the conference room when Manik walked in, his presence instantly commanding attention. Charts and digital presentations were ready on the large screen, and as he took his seat at the head of the table, the team's director, Mr. Kapoor, began the presentation.
"Good morning, Mr. Malhotra," Mr. Kapoor began with a respectful nod. "Today, we're here to discuss our strategies for the next quarter, specifically focusing on market expansion and targeted ad campaigns."
Manik listened intently, his gaze sharp as he assessed each slide. His mind whirred as he absorbed the numbers, projections, and creative ideas the team had come up with. After a few minutes, he raised a hand, signaling for Mr. Kapoor to pause.
"This strategy for digital marketing... I see the potential, but these projections are conservative," he noted, his tone firm. "Our brand has the leverage to aim higher, to push for greater visibility. Let's consider increasing the budget here by 15% to amplify outreach on social media platforms. I want us to dominate the space."
Mr. Kapoor nodded, quickly taking notes. "Understood, sir. We'll adjust the budget accordingly."
The rest of the meeting continued smoothly, with Manik offering insights, giving detailed feedback, and occasionally challenging the team to think bigger and bolder. By the end, his vision for the next quarter was clear: aggressive expansion and a heightened digital presence. He stood, signaling the end of the meeting, and gave a brief nod to the team.
"Good work. I'll expect to see a revised proposal by next week," he said before leaving the room.
Back in his office, Manik prepared for his next meeting-a video conference with key clients overseas. He sat down in front of his computer as tanya entered to set up the call.
"Everything's ready, Mr. Malhotra," she said, giving him a brief smile before leaving.
The screen flickered to life, and soon the faces of the international delegates appeared. There was polite small talk before diving into business, but Manik quickly steered the conversation to the main point: the progress of their project in Southeast Asia.
"We've seen some delays on-site," one of the delegates, Mr. Chen, informed him. "Local regulations have shifted, and there are new approvals needed."
Manik's expression hardened, but he kept his tone controlled. "How long are we looking at?"
"Possibly two weeks, maybe longer," Mr. Chen replied. "We're working closely with local authorities, but the process is taking more time than anticipated."
Manik pressed his fingers together, contemplating. "All right. I'll need a report detailing all pending approvals and steps taken so far. We need to speed things up if possible-time is of the essence. I don't want delays affecting our rollout."
The conversation continued with Manik steering the discussion, offering solutions, and ensuring that all bases were covered. The call wrapped up with a plan in place to address the delays, and Manik felt a surge of satisfaction as he signed off.
As the day continued, Manik kept up his fast-paced rhythm. He reviewed financial reports, discussed updates with the development team, and even made time to check in on employee morale. By mid-afternoon, he was in his office, reviewing yet another set of documents when Riya knocked on the door, holding a stack of files.
"Here are the reports you requested, sir," she said, setting them on his desk. "I also wanted to remind you about tomorrow's interviews. Everything's ready, and I'll ensure a smooth handover."
Manik looked up, nodding appreciatively. "Good work, Tanya. I appreciate the effort you've put into this."
She smiled, a bit wistfully. "It's been a pleasure working for you, Mr. Malhotra. I'll miss this place."
Manik's gaze softened slightly. "We'll miss having you here as well. Best of luck with everything ahead and congratulations for your marriage."
She left the room, and he returned his attention to the reports. As he worked through each one, the hours slipped by until, finally, he realized it was nearing evening.
Manik barely noticed the fading daylight outside, fully absorbed in his tasks. As the sun set, casting a golden glow through his office windows, he felt a rare sense of contentment in his work. There was an art to running a company, a balance of discipline, strategy, and instinct-and he relished every second of it.
Finally, as he wrapped up his final call of the day, Manik stood and stretched, feeling the toll of the day. He checked his watch, realizing it was time to head home. Just as he packed up, his phone buzzed with a notification-another meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning.
"Another day, another challenge," he murmured to himself with a small smile.
With his bag in hand, Manik made his way out of the office, greeting a few staff members as he left. He felt a sense of satisfaction as he stepped into his car, ready to recharge for whatever tomorrow would bring.
Nandini woke up to the gentle warmth of the early morning sun streaming through her bedroom window. Today was a big day, and as the memory returned, a small rush of nerves accompanied her excitement. She was about to interview for a position at Malhotra Industries-a name that carried weight in every corner of the business world. She had been preparing for this, but the thought of stepping into such a powerhouse company still made her heart race.
She got out of bed and went through her morning routine, her movements purposeful and precise. Her choice of attire reflected her dedication to making the right impression. Taking a final glance in the mirror, she picked up her bag and double-checked to make sure her documents were in order.
As she held the stack of papers, her gaze lingered for a moment on the cover page, imagining the company's logo printed with her name beneath it. Smiling to herself, she put the documents carefully into her bag and took a deep breath.
"Here we go, Nandini," she murmured, giving herself a little pep talk. "Today's the day. You've got this."
The towering glass structure of Malhotra Industries gleamed in the daylight, standing proudly against the backdrop of the bustling city. Nandini gazed up at it, momentarily awestruck. She was familiar with corporate buildings, but there was something particularly imposing about this one-its sleek architecture and grand entrance seemed to embody the power of the company.
Taking a deep breath, she steadied herself and stepped inside. The interior was just as impressive as the exterior-polished marble floors, high ceilings, and modern décor, every detail designed to project both elegance and efficiency. As she approached the reception desk, her footsteps echoed slightly, a reminder of the quiet stillness within this professional haven.
"Excuse me," she said politely to the receptionist. "I'm here for an interview with the CEO's office."
The receptionist, a woman in her thirties with a warm yet professional demeanor, looked up and gave her a courteous smile. "Of course. If you head to the twelfth floor, you'll find the waiting area on the right. Someone will assist you there."
Nandini thanked her and followed the directions, feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension. Upon reaching the twelfth floor, she found the waiting area-a stylish lounge with comfortable seating, a few modern art pieces on the walls, and a large window overlooking the city. She noticed a few other candidates sitting there, each seemingly engrossed in their thoughts.
Taking a seat among them, she adjusted her bag on her lap, glancing around with curiosity. The other candidates each carried an air of professionalism and confidence, making her wonder about their backgrounds. Just then, her phone buzzed in her bag. She reached for it, noticing a message, reading: All the best for the interview!
A smile tugged at her lips as she quickly typed out a reply: Thank you! It was a small gesture, but it was the kind of support that gave her an extra boost of confidence.
As she put her phone away, she looked around once more. Every few minutes, a candidate's name was called, and they'd disappear behind the double doors that led to the interview rooms. Some came out looking nervous, others looking relieved, and some with unreadable expressions. She realized that each person was probably experiencing their own version of the same nerves she felt.
The minutes ticked by slowly. Her fingers tapped gently against her bag as she rehearsed answers in her mind, thinking through her resume, her skills, and how to make the best impression. When her name was finally called, she felt a jolt of anticipation mixed with a little anxiety. She straightened up, took a deep breath, and walked forward.
The assistant guided her through a corridor, past several closed doors, and finally stopped in front of a spacious conference room. "Mr. Malhotra will see you shortly," the assistant said, giving her a polite nod before departing.
Nandini's heart skipped a beat at the mention of "Mr. Malhotra." She knew she was going to meet with someone from the upper echelon of Malhotra Industries, but hearing his name directly made it feel more real. She took another steadying breath and waited, trying to exude calmness despite the fluttering in her chest.
