Scare Him Away
^Hugh: They told me I could be anything, so I became a superhero.
"I just don't trust him." Enoch said angrily as he rummaged through jars on a shelf. "He's just like his grandfather. He looks like him. He sounds like him. He's in love with the same girl." His cockney accent really stood out when he was upset. But it made him cuter.
"Enoch, you've got to calm down." I said. "He's just one boy. It's nothing to get worked up over."
"I have a ton of reasons to be angry, Netta. I told that tot he would leave. And he left! Emma's heart was broke. He's just an embodiment of all the hate I feel for Abe. Do you want to know something? I don't think Jacob's going to stay. I think he'll pack up and leave. Who in his right mind is going to voluntarily stay in a time loop?" He said. His voice cracked with the last word.
"It's going to be okay. You don't have to talk to him."
"No! You don't understand. Everyone in the loop already likes him. Why? Why do I have to wait a year before anybody even cares about me? That's why I'm taking the American out of the picture. It's going to be really simple. Just scare him a bit, and he'll be off the island within a week." It sounded simple enough.
"Okay..." I said hesitantly.
"Good, I'm glad you understand where I'm going with this." He began collecting some homunculi and jars.
"Well, I still don't know. It's just, we need him, Enoch. We need someone else who can see the hollows."
"Oh, whatever. I don't need your conformation. I'm still going with it." He started up the stairs.
"Enoch! Wait, we need to talk about this!" I ran past Jacob, who was walking through the front door, and past Miss Peregrine, who was waiting for him. "You can't do that to him, we need him too badly!"
He continued to press forward, with his arms full of dolls and a couple jars.
"Enoch, please. You can't do that. What would Miss Peregrine say?"
"Go away!" Enoch spun around and glared. "I'm not listening to you anymore. You're like another mum! I don't need the Bird, and Bronwyn, and you too to preside over me and tell me what to do. Get a life that's not bothering other people."
"Enoch, I know you don't mean that. You're just upset!" I said. I felt more like I was trying to tell myself that.
"Yes, I do mean it. For someone who's got hyperacusia, you're surprisingly bad at hearing what I'm saying. Just leave."
"I told you right before the second kiss, right before you fell asleep with me, that I loved you, but not when you're lashing out at terrible moments. This is one of those times!" Tears started to run down my face.
"I'm sorry I'm the problem in this relationship. Maybe neither of us is committed." He crossed his arms.
"Okay, that's fine. I knew this was never going to work out. You're too awful. Goodbye!" I stalked off back up to the house, where Jacob was getting off from his talk with Miss Peregrine.
"Nettalyn, do you know where Emma is?" He asked, not realizing just how stressed I was at the moment.
"She's on a supply run!" I shouted, making the echoey hall ring. I tried to push past him but he grabbed my shoulder.
"Are you upset?" He said. Poor Jacob. He still thought the loop was all rosy, and he was wrong.
"I'm glad you noticed." I muttered. I wiped the tears off my cheeks. "But I don't want to talk to you right now. Emma's going to be back soon." I didn't want to talk to Jacob about it. He didn't understand what is was like to have someone you've loved for more than three decades end a relationship. And he was a boy, and I really wanted a girl to talk too.
"Oh, okay. I hope you feel better." He looked back for an instant before heading outside. I went to the library, which had a comforting scent. Millard was sitting at his desk instead of being out in the village like usual.
"Hey." He said, acknowledging my presence. I walked over to a couch on the other side of the room and pulled one of my favorite books off the shelf and started to read. The Secret Garden.
It was only after I had gotten to chapter two when I realized I had forgotten to warn Jacob.
