Chapter 9

"What did you say?" I'm not sure I heard him right. I feel my heart pounding in my chest. I did not know that just simple words strung together could make me feel like this.

I tilt my head up to face him. "Lucas?"

"I don't want you to go out with him. Not with him or with anyone." He places his hand on the side of my face. He swipes his thumb gently across my cheek.

"Why?" I ask. He's too close that I can feel his warm breath, giving me chills all over my body.

He stares intently into my eyes, his hazel eyes turning almost light green. He's about to tell me something but we're interrupted by a voice, whose voice I recognize as Margaret's.

"Hey guys! What are doing standing outside?" She approaches us. But as soon as she sees Lucas and I, she puts a hand to her mouth. "Oh! am I interrupting something?" She asks.

Lucas lets go of me when he sees Margaret. He looks flushed, embarrassed even. "No mom, we were just coming in."

Margaret has a glint of amusement in her eyes, she gives a smile to the both of us. "Sure. We'll be waiting inside." She leaves to enter the house, which I presume is their house.

"Wait, this is your house?" I gasp.

"No, its my mom's." Lucas answers nonchalantly.

"But still, why did you bring me here?" I'm surprised that he would bring me to his mother's house without even inviting me. But Margaret wasn't shocked to see me so maybe she was expecting me.

"Why do you always have so many questions?" Lucas groans. "Let's just get inside. Its cold out."

He goes towards the magnificent house. I guess he's expecting me to follow suit, so I do.

"Fine." I'm too exhausted to even question him at this point. And honestly I'd rather be here than be on a date with a guy whose name I don't even know. Yet.

When we enter the house, I'm engulfed by a delicious smell. It makes me hungry even more. The house looks cozy yet elegant with hardwood floors and furniture across the house. I notice a few paintings hanging solemnly on the wall. Even though I have limited knowledge about anything art related, I can tell that they look expensive.

Lucas heads upstairs leaving me stranded alone in this mansion. Maybe he's upset, again, for the tenth time today. You can never know with him. One minute he'll make you feel out of breath, and the next he'll be telling you off. I shake my head slightly as I think about his nature.

"Amelia?" Margaret calls out to me. "Could you help me in the kitchen please?" She asks.

I head to where her voice came, which I think came from the kitchen. I see her putting up foods on the dinner table with an apron wrapped around her waist.

"Wow you made all this?" I gape at the amount of food spread on the table. I try not to drool in front of Margaret.

"Oh I just prepared a few, since I didn't know what you'd like." She says.

"A few? What are you talking about? This is a feast!" I exclaim pointing to the table.

"I might have got a bit excited." She chuckles as she plates quite skillfully. "Its been a while since we had a guest over for dinner. I told Lucas to invite you over so we could get to know each other better. I would invite you myself but I didn't have your number and I didn't know where you live so.." She looks up at me. "Oh forgive me, I'm rambling again aren't I?"

"No, its okay. You don't have to apologise. Its nice to finally have someone to have a conversation with." I wave her off.

She smiles sweetly at me. "Why? Don't you have anyone to talk to at home? I don't mean to be nosy."

"Well yeah I live alone." I know she's asking me out of sheer curiosity but I wish she wouldn't ask me further. I really don't want to talk about my family.

She seems to catch my thoughts as she says, "If you want anyone to talk to about anything, you can come over anytime sweetheart"

"Thanks." I simply smile at her.

"Are we going to moan about our feelings or are we gonna eat?" I hear a voice behind me. I turn my head back to see Lucas leaning against the wall with his arms crossed across his chest.

He's dressed in a simple black t-shirt with a pajama, his biceps clearly visible against his t-shirt. Its almost strange to see him dressed in something other than his regular suits. He looks normal but his intimidating aura is still there.

"Don't be rude Lucas." Margaret scolds him. Sometimes I forget that Margaret is the only person Lucas listens to, ever.

Margaret turns to look at me.
"Could you pass me the salad, dear?" She asks.

I look around until I spot the salad bowl filled with salad. I take the bowl and hand it to her. She places the salad bowl in the center of the dining table.

"Shall we eat?" Margaret says as she takes off her apron and places it on the countertop.

"Yes I'm famished seeing all this food." I say putting my hands on my stomach.

Margaret sits on the other side of the table, while I sit directly opposite to her. Lucas surprises me by sitting right next to me.

"Eat your heart out kid. I know how hungry you can get." Lucas teased.

"Yeah if somebody would have been nice enough to let me go home early, I wouldn't be starving now would I?" I glare at him, trying to sound as polite while intimidating at the same time.

Margaret chuckles at our bickering. "Lucas have you been starving this young lady? How dare you? Have I not told you that food is the most important thing in life, especially to a hard working young lady like Amelia?" Margaret pretends to scold Lucas.

"Oh so you're siding with her?" Lucas shakes his head.

"Who's siding with who?" A voice comes from behind us. I turn around to see a young girl wearing leather jacket and jeans. She must be Lucas's sister. She's beautiful even though she doesn't flaunt it like most rich girls do.

"Hey sweetie!" Margaret greets her cheerfully. "Amelia, this is Quinn. Quinn, meet Amelia. She works for your brother."

"Oh she's the one that hit you right mom?" Quinn looks at me. She's the honest type, I believe.

"Yeah I'm really sorry about that." I apologize once again.

"It's fine." She waves me off. "I wish I was there to see mom's face though. It would've been priceless!" She laughs.

Margaret rolls her eyes at Quinn. "Right. I swear this girl would not even try to help me if she was there."

"Luke you should've took a photo. It would've make a great Christmas card this year." Quinn chuckles as she takes the food on to her plate.

"See Amelia my children doesn't love me." Margaret sighs dramatically.

"Aww mom you know we love you." Quinn says, hugging her mother sideways.

I smile at seeing them so close. It reminds me of my mom. If she were still here, I believe we'd have the same relationship as that of Margaret and Quinn.

"Hey you okay?" Lucas nudges me lightly, breaking me from my thoughts.

"Yeah." I say, recovering quickly "I'm fine." I smile a him.

"Eat up. Don't be shy." Lucas grins.

"That's right. There's lots of food here, help yourself Amelia." Margaret pushes the smoked chicken gently to my side.

"Thank you so much for dinner Margaret. I think I might have ate a little too much." I laugh as I pick up my bag and turn to leave.

"I'm glad you liked my cooking." She says as she gives me a hug. "You can come over anytime okay."

"Yes I might take you up on that." I let go of her and head outside. Lucas is waiting for me at his car, I can see him strumming his fingers on the steering wheel. Always the impatient one.

"Hey!" I say once I get inside the car.

"What took you so long? Were you having a tea party before you came out?" He says as he starts the car.

I roll my eyes at him. "I was saying goodbye to your mother. I don't want to be rude like someone and leave without saying thanks."

He lets out a sigh. "So I'm guessing you're still mad at me."

I look at him and see his vulnerability again. He's like a chameleon always changing his mood.

"Look Lucas I'm not mad okay. I actually had a great time with your family. I think they're really sweet and wonderful." I tell him the truth. I did have a great time with them. "So thank you, I guess." I say in a low tone.

"I'm sorry what was that?" Lucas puts his hand on his ear.

"I'm not saying it again." I glare at him. I know he's teasing me so I refuse to repeat myself.

He laughs at my discomfort. Why does he sound so, dare I say sexy, when he laughs. He really should laugh more.

"You checking me out?" Lucas smirks at me.

"What? No I wasn't!" My voice a tone higher than normal as I weakly defend myself.

"We reached your apartment a couple minutes ago." He grins with his stupid smirk still plastered on his face.

"What?" I look outside and see that he's right. Shit. He caught me. "Uhm thanks for the ride. So goodbye!" I open the door and try to rush out but I forgot to unbuckle my seatbelt.

Lucas laughs harder at seeing me stuck. I quickly unbuckle my beat belt and get out as quickly as I can. I can feel my face flaming.

"Goodnight you knucklehead!" I hear Lucas saying just before I enter the apartment.
