Chapter 23
Matt dropped me off at my house, after our visit to Mary's house. We enter the house but dad and Claire are not home. We settle down on the couch, both exhausted from all the ride we had today.
"Ems what will you do?" Matt asks me again.
"I don't know, Matt. I kind of feel bad for her you know, its not exactly her fault she ended up like this. But that doesn't mean I can forgive her for what she did to me." I sigh.
"I understand. Just know that whatever you decide, I'm with you okay?" Matt turns his head to me.
"I know." I offer him a small smile. "What do you think I should do?" I ask him. He's always been the one I turn to when I can't decide about something.
"To be honest, I don't know either." Matt shrugs. "Maybe you should learn to forgive her. I know that must be hard for you Ems, I know but it'll be the only way you will be able to have peace with yourself and also with Claire. Don't let hatred be in the way of your happiness." Matt says. See this is what I'm talking about. He always thinks rationally.
"Yeah you're right. But I'm not sure whether I can forgive her right away but I'll try." I agree with Matt. "I want to help her, Matt. I want to help her see that not all people are bad, there are some who will love her unconditionally no matter what. I want her to know that she can be better, if she tries."
"Yeah I'm with you. We'll help her together okay?" Matt says. "But right now I need to go home. Got a major project to work on." He stands up from the couch.
"Okay I'll see you tomorrow." I tell him and bid him goodnight.
Claire and dad must've gone out for dinner. So I decide to make myself an egg Benedict. I can't help but think about Lucas. He has not even called yet. I'm starting to wonder if he ever really cared for me at all. If he did care, he would have listened to m before deciding to hate on me the moment he found out the truth.
The door swungs open just as I finish my food. I turn my head towards the door and see that its Claire. Now that I know about what she went through, I feel sorry for her when I see her.
"Claire." I address her.
"Did I just hear you call my name?" She drops her bag on the table, heading towards me. "Where's your bodyguard?" She raises one brow at me. She takes out a water bottle from the fridge and drinks it.
I roll my eyes at her. "Matt had work to do." I tell her.
"Oh you sure you won't be scared at night? Sleeping all alone?" She taunts me. "There may be demons lurking around here, you know." She smirks.
"You don't have to be this way, Claire." I tell her, quietly. Even if I hate this woman, I still want to help her. Its not her fault she turned out this way. I want to help her break out of her shell, by learning that its okay to be hurt before. I just hope she lets me.
"What?" She sounds surprised to hear me say that.
"You don't have to be this way. I understand what you must be feeling after all you went through." I tell her, secretly praying she won't lash out on me again.
"What did you say?" She puts down her water bottle, staring at me.
"I know what you went through when you were young. You don't have to be the same person as your dad, Claire. You can be better." I stand up in front of her.
"How dare you!" She yells and slaps me right across the face.
My hand immediately cups my cheek after she slapped me, tears brimming in my eyes from the impact. I turn my head up, looking straight into her eyes, biting my lower lip to keep myself from crying.
"Don't you ever talk about my dad. You don't know him!" She seethes and leaves to go to her room.
I sit back down, angry but hurt at the same time. Why won't she let anyone in? I'm trying. God knows I'm only trying to help her.
"Amelia what are you doing sitting alone?" My father comes into the kitchen. "Did Claire come home? I told her to come home before me since I needed to meet a client." He continues to say.
Of course he would ask about Claire. She's the only person he cares about. I ignore him and stand up, starting to leave for my room.
"Amelia have you been crying?" My father stops me from walking, grabbing me by my arms. "What's wrong?" He asks, his brows scrunched up.
"Nothing. You wouldn't understand anyway." I tell him.
My father sighs, letting go of my hand. "I know we've been on a rough patch lately but you're still my daughter Amelia. I want to help you. I don't know why you've been acting strange lately but I want you to be better. I want to be there for you." He says, his eyes holding so much sadness, I feel a little sad too seeing him like this. Its been so long since we had an honest heart to heart talk, I can't even remembere the last time we had a real talk.
"Then why won't you believe me, dad? I'm your daughter right? Why won't you believe your own daughter?" I ask him.
"Because you're not making any sense!" He says putting his hands up in exasperation.
"And Claire does?" I spit. "Do you even know the first thing about Claire?"
"What kind of question is that?" My father mocks me. "Of course I know! She's my wife and your mother!"
I still hate the way he calls her my mother. "No, my mother died 10years ago!" I yell.
"Yes your mother died! She died okay! Claire's your mother now." He shouts.
I gasp at the way he's talking about mom. "Do you even remember Mom? Did you even love her?" I wipe my tears that had escaped. "Do you even love me?" I ask, my voice nearly breaking.
My father's eyes soften when he sees me cry. "Amelia of course I love you. You're my daughter." He steps towards me, putting his hands around my arms.
"But you sure have a terrible way of showing it." I say and head up to my room.
I shut the room behind me, locking it. I throw myself on my bed, hugging the teddy bear Mom got me as a birthday gift. I miss her so much. Why is the universe so cruel? Why did she have to leave so soon? I don't even have enough memories with her.
"Mom I miss you." I cry into my pillow. "Can't you see your daughter is suffering?"
My phone rings just then, I take it out from my back pocket. I look at the screen and see that its Lucas. Its Lucas. He called. I almost can't believe it. I dried my eyes, and quickly swipe my thumb across my phone to answer it.
"Lucas." I breathe, hoping he doesn't notice the strain in my voice.
"Amelia," Lucas says. My heart calms down a little when I finally hear his voice. Its been so long since I last heard his voice let alone see him.
"You called." I say, feeling relieved that I didn't imagine this. I have imagined him calling me many times, I would make up conversations in my head with him. I would think of what to say when he finally called, but now that he does call, I forgot everything I was supposed to say to him.
"Yeah. I called." Lucas breathes. He sounds like he's out of things to say too.
Have you ever experienced that feeling of having too much to say but nothing at the same time? That's exactly how I feel right now. I have so much things to tell him but I don't know how to.
"How are you?" He asks again.
I almost laugh when he asks that. What did he expect me to feel?
"I'm fine." I decide to say. The number one lie in the world, people who say they're fine are never fine. Yet we still say it hoping it will shelter us from the truth.
"Good." Lucas says after a long pause.
"Why didn't you answer my calls?" I finally manage to ask him.
"I was busy." He says slowly.
"Busy getting drunk?" I snicker.
"What?"
"I heard you got drunk. You didn't even want to hear me explain and you decide to get drunk!" I say, suddenly feeling mad at him.
"What was there to explain Amelia? You fucking lied to me!" He shouts on the other side of the line.
"Why do you always make it about you?!" I shout back. "Have you ever considered what I might be feeling? No you didn't! You didn't even blink when you asked me to leave!" I end the call. I'm hoping for him to call back but he doesn't.
