Chapter 33 - The Birth
Lights swirled around me as I awoke in a fast-moving hospital bed.
It instantly felt like déjà vu.
'Indigo, stay with me!' This time it wasn't my mother who was urging me to stay awake and holding my hand, but an unfamiliar nurse who was looking down at me imploringly. Why was she looking at me like that?
My eyes felt heavy and droopy.
'Her blood sugar level's dropping...' One of the doctors uttered urgently.
At that point my eyes fluttered to a close, all noise fading into the background.
'Indigo!'
When Adrian screamed my name they snapped back open. I tried to sit up but found I couldn't, instead I resorted to looking around me which I found an impossible task with the walls whizzing by so quickly.
'Adrian?' My voice was sleep laden; heavy.
Sleep.
That was all I wanted to do right now.
For some reason I found myself resisting the urge.
My haze was torn from me when a sharp stabbing pain came from my stomach. It was so intense that my eyes were bulging in their sockets.
The scream that erupted from me wasn't my own and reminded me of a beaten; savage animal.
'INDIGO!' Adrian rushed towards me and tried grabbing my hand which fell limply to the side. I couldn't do anything about it -- not even move it back up.
'What's happening to her?' He asked the doctors who were dragging my bed into a closed-off room. I didn't like the way the blinds were tightly shut.
It seemed like a bad omen.
'Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave...' One of them replied.
When Adrian hissed they didn't back down to which I gave them credit.
'No.' He ground out. 'I'm staying.'
Just then, a nurse tugged on his sleeve none too gently. 'I'm sorry sir, but you need to leave.'
While he and the nurse were busy struggling, I was panting as a series of sharp cramping pains caused something within me to contract. The pain was excruciating, unbearable even.
It was like nothing I had ever experienced before.
The baby!
Moans came from my mouth as my body screamed at me to 'push' and I did. One of the doctors saw what I was doing and urged me to hold on for a little while longer. Apparently it wasn't time to push yet.
Another, older nurse squeezed my hand. 'Stay awake, dear.' She told me sternly as her cold skin met mine. I didn't know what she meant by that until I felt myself drift away.
It was unstoppable. I couldn't fight it.
The heart monitor stopped beeping.
***
It was cold, but bright. Very bright.
I didn't know where I was.
Everywhere I looked white light surrounded me. It seemed to be coming from nowhere in particular.
Just as I was contemplating screaming for help, an image of a small child - a girl - with long, dark hair, appeared in front of me. She looked to be around six and when she smiled there was a gap where a tooth should be.
Feeling curious, I stepped closer.
She seemed to be sitting on some grass which faded a metre or so in diameter in all directions, away from her. A doll was sitting in her lap and she was brushing at its hair, humming softly to herself as she did so.
The girl didn't seem to notice as I stepped closer to her, and seemed completely oblivious to my presence when I stood just a few inches away watching her play.
After a few moments the girl must've heard a sound because she lifted her head up and gazed into the direction to my right. Around me of course, was just light so I couldn't see what she was looking at.
The little girl's face brightened at something as she stood, bouncing on the toes of her feet almost in excitement.
Something told me to step away from the silent film, and just as I did so a slightly older version of me walked into the scene.
I watched, dumbfounded, as the older me picked the child up and placed the girl on her hips, laughing at something she said. Of course, no sound came from her mouth.
It really was a silent film.
The older me turned to walk away in the direction she'd come from, and I felt a sharp pang at their departure. This foreign feeling only increased as I watched the two disappear from sight, and when they did it was just at that moment that I felt a sense of recognition towards the girl.
Lily.
The girl's name was Lily.
And she was my daughter...

Adrian~
I hadn't been told anything - not a damn single thing.
Ever since that nurse had forced me to sit out in the waiting room, I'd done nothing but pace.
I knew that this could very well be the last time I saw Indigo, as much as I hated to admit it, and I was wasting it by standing around.
Damn fucking nurse.
I needed to be with Indigo, my Destined, not stood out here like some dog.
My temper got the best of me and I yelled loudly, slamming my fists into the wall. The nearby security guards eyed me closely, causing me to stop.
Angrily, I ran my hands through my hair and was about to sit down on the uncomfortable looking seats when I heard a large commotion in the hallway. Instantly, I ran towards the door.
'Her heart's stopped!' One of the doctors who was running out of Indigo's room called out.
Shit.
Another senior doctor walked briskly towards the room, putting on a surgical mask as he did so.
I paled. Oh no.
Indigo.
'What's going on?' I demanded as I tried to barge my way into her room. To say I was angry was an understatement. I was fucking furious.
Inside was chaotic and I barely registered when I heard the feeble sound of a small child crying. All I could hear was the droning heart monitor.
Indigo's heart had stopped.
My fangs retracted and I growled, loudly. 'Let me in!'
The same nurse who had pulled me out earlier gave me a stern look. 'Sir, you can't come in --'
'My child.' I cut her off, pissed. 'Where are they?'
The nurse abruptly closed her mouth to whatever she was going to say and sighed before hurriedly collecting a small, clothed bundle from the corner of the room, and placing it in my arms.
When I saw the same dark brown eyes staring back at me from the bundle I was stunned.
It was a girl.
She was beautiful.
'My daughter...' I said, awed. I couldn't believe it. She looked just like me yet, she looked so much like Indigo. I instantly loved her.
'Indigo...' My heart quickened when I thought back to my wife. She was dying. 'Let me in!' This time I growled at the nurse who was blocking my path.
The small smile which was on her face was wiped clean when she remembered her duties.
This time she ushered me out - a bit more gently now that I was carrying a child. 'I'm sorry, sir.' She said briskly. 'But you need to stay out here.' The doors were shut in my face.
I exhaled heavily staring at the child before me.
My beautiful daughter had strangely remained silent throughout the whole episode, making me think that she somehow knew the outcome of her mother's fate and was patiently waiting for it to happen.
Mustering all of the self control I had, I held my daughter closely to me before pulling out my phone.
I needed to call Indigo's parents. It was time for them to say goodbye.
What do you think Indigo's outcome will be?
