Chapter 12 - Getting To Know Him
The day passed slowly much to my disappointment. I tried asking my father why Adrian was being permitted to stay in the guest wing and was allowed to remain in our home, but he wouldn't give me a straight answer.
From the snippets of conversation I'd overheard between my father, Roland and Miguel, it seemed that rejecting Adrian's offer wouldn't be as easy as I'd hoped. Possibly because of Adrian's wealth and high status, much to my disappointment.
That was something that I definitely couldn't sabotage.
Being careful to studiously avoid Carlos at all costs, I explored some of the older rooms of the house that I hadn't visited in a while before finding myself stood in our smallest private library.
Quickly, I walked over to the large window seat, taking with me my favourite classic, 'Wuthering Heights.' After about thirty minutes of reading I began to get drowsy and almost fell asleep with the book in my lap.
When I heard mutters coming from further on down the corridor outside, I hastily decided to shut the book before hiding amongst a row of shelves in the furthest corner of the room. I managed to duck just from their view just as the library doors were opened.
'Yeah, you need to read it. It's in here somewhere - over there.'
I scowled as I recognised the voice to be Eva's and hid even lower behind the safety of the shelves.
'What's the title of the book?' An amused voice asked as they followed an enthusiastic- sounding Eva who was currently rummaging through the shelves on the opposite side of the room.
'Wuthering heights.' She giggled nervously as she continued looking through the shelf, Carlos joining in to help. 'It's a classic.' Her voice had taken on a dreamy tone as she spoke of my favourite book that I was now currently holding.
There was a sound of shuffling followed by a brief pause. 'It's not here.' The disappointment in her voice was evident and I had to fight back a smirk. Score one to Indigo, I thought.
From where I was sitting I glared as Carlos suddenly grabbed hold of Eva's waist causing her to shriek. 'I could think of something that else we could do instead.' He murmured against her neck as he held her tightly.
I rolled my eyes just as Eva's stupid giggles and gasps turned into something much more... heated.
I was dying inside.
Out of all the places Carlos and his stupid human mate and lover could've gone, it had to be in the library - the one place I'd thought that would forever be my resting place, as it had been when I was slightly younger.
Now, whenever I came here all I would have were memories filled with Carlos and Eva's passionate make out which made me sick to the stomach just thinking about.
I knew it was about to get even worse when I saw Carlos hoist Eva against the shelves with her legs wrapped around her waist, and before my eyes became burned by the sight I instantly stood, slamming my favourite book on one of the shelves for emphasis.
They both jolted as if they'd had an electric current been zapped up their spines and their expressions of guilt and horror just said it all.
No doubt the library would've been the next place ticked off their list for which they'd made love.
Ignoring my burning cheeks, I tried my very best to push down the pain that was twisting itself around my heart, before giving them the bitchiest glare I had ever given another vampire.
Making eye contact with Eva I said, 'I believe this is the book you were looking for.' Before gesturing at the book on the shelf and storming out of the gigantic room.
Tears blinded my eyes as I ran.
Pathetic, I thought.
They'd been together since day one and I still couldn't get over seeing them like that.
But he's our mate, my vampire side hissed. And I agreed with it to an extent. Although by judging how many times he'd snuck around with Eva I doubt that would have any impact on him at all.
We were having a dinner tomorrow with several of our closest friends, the 'Abbott's' the 'Milones,' the 'Silas's' and the 'Pagett's.'
There were to be about sixty of us altogether and no doubt Adrian would also be invited to attend.
Afterwards, there would also be a small ball-like event held in our smaller ballroom for the guests, and with that came alcohol. Lots and lots of alcohol.
Alcohol plus hot vampires equals revenge. And a chance to calm down my stupid fucking hormones.
***************
The evening was going well.
Well, as well as I'd hoped. All families had turned up meaning the mini ball party thing (whatever it was) would definitely be on tonight and for that I was glad.
Most of the vampires were teenagers who had come along with their parents (vampires tended to have a lot of children - our family was an exception), which would no doubt spice up the evening. One vampire who I had my eye on in particular, was male and couple of years older than me.
He had blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes with the straightest white teeth that I could ever possibly imagine, and in between laughing at a few other girls' jokes he kept on looking at me, which I took to be a sign of his interest.
Picking up my fork, I took a bite from my steak, making sure to maintain eye contact with him. I did this several times over the course of the meal and when I'd finished dessert, I could've sworn his eyes had darkened by a few shades.
Carlos and Miguel were of course sat at the opposite end of the table next to my father and as usual I was ignoring Carlos completely.
The meal carried on and at the end of it my body was tingling with excitement as we entered the mini guest ball which had been completely transformed to accommodate for twice as many guests.
There was a large buffet table in one corner (Eva was nowhere in sight much to my relief) and a DJ stand was stood at the other end.
A disco ball (yes, a disco ball) hung from the centre of the room, making the ballroom glitter prettily and somehow sharpening each vampire face I encountered.
Spotting the male vampire stood next to the buffet table who I'd been eyeing up earlier, I was just about to saunter over to him when a strong hand gripped my arm.
'What the...'
The last thing I saw was the blonde vampire's face flash with disappointment as I was unceremoniously dragged through the ballroom, up our grand staircase and through someone's bedroom until I was stood on the bedroom's balcony overlooking the estate.
I brushed myself off feeling more than peeved, and thankfully not scared at all. 'The nerve!' I yelled into the darkness at my attacker who was nowhere in sight. 'Seriously?!' I screeched. 'At least show yourself!'
On closer inspection, I saw the bedroom was barely lit by the moonlight meaning I couldn't make out which wing I was in. The room did however smell undeniably masculine which made my body tingle with pleasure, but that was the only clue given to me.
Seeing as I was a vampire I should have been able to recognise the scent but I'd had a lot to drink during the meal and my brain was a bit foggy. OK, a lot foggy.
And jumbled.
It was a wonder I wasn't slurring and was managing to even stand upright. Squinting again, inspecting the shadows I said, 'Hello?'
From the corner of the room someone quickly stepped out and I was greeted with a gleaming smile from none other than one of my least favourite people.
Adrian.
I sighed dramatically. 'May I ask why you dragged me from my own party, Adrian?' It was phrased pleasantly enough, but even I could detect the overriding bitchiness used in my tone.
He didn't say anything.
I didn't say anything back or even take a step forward in case I lost my balance.
I quickly got bored and hesitantly overlooked the estate gardens from over my shoulder before turning around.
He'd speak when he was ready to.
The estate shone beautifully in the moonlight, and as I strained to hear the sounds of the nocturnal animals stirring to life, I could faintly detect the hooting of an owl and the beating heart of a small creature rustling; hidden in the grass.
The night really was breathtaking.
'You're upset.' He stated. His voice which was spoken from a few inches behind me which took me by surprise even though it shouldn't have.
I snorted. 'And?'
There was a whir of air as Adrian who was also stood beside me overlooked the gardens, spun me around to face him. I continued to watch his jaw clench and unclench in fascination as he stared into my eyes.
I really was drunk.
'That vampire.' He stated. 'You were going to use him to make Miguel's son jealous.' The way he'd spoken so matter-of-factlly about it had me bristling.
'So?'
He nodded as something seemed to be confirmed. Well, at least I knew now how obvious my behaviour been.
Inwardly, I cursed myself.
'So?' I asked again, ignoring the wave of pain that had decided to wash over me as I remembered how little attention Carlos had been paying to me during the meal.
On second thoughts, I doubted Carlos had even noticed what I'd been doing.
When he didn't respond I was close to slapping him. 'Why did you drag me to your room?' You piece of shit, I wanted to add, but thought better of it. I wasn't that drunk.
He was silent for a long moment before he finally spoke. There was a vulnerability in his eyes that almost had me taking a step back. I didn't like it.
Adrian didn't do vulnerable.
What he said next, I had no way of preparing myself for.
'Use me.' He said as he stared at what must've been my shocked expression. I could've sworn the ground shifted as those brown orbs met mine and my heart rate increased as I felt myself taking shallower breaths.
'W-what?'
'To make Carlos jealous.' He clarified. 'Use me.' The tone he used was final, as if he'd given me no room for choice.
Like I said, I hadn't expected what he'd said so I did the thing that shocked us both.
I started laughing.
So yeah... I've got to say it probably wasn't her smartest reaction but hey, she's drunk!
