CHAPTER EIGHT

THIRD PERSON
So here they were.
A half naked Jungkook storming into the living room, looking as if he was about to strangle an innocent looking Namjoon.
"Hey! Nice hair, Timberlands." He messed up Jungkook's cherry red hair with his hands as a greeting.
"I already told you. If you're bringing someone home for any reason at all, you contact me!"
"In my defense, you should have contacted me to let me know you were home early."
Joy sauntered from the hallway into the living room, obviously trying to sneak past the boys' conversation to avoid embarrassment beyond what had happened in Namjoon's room.
"Ah!" Namjoon pulled her towards him. "You can't leave yet."
"And why not?" She raised an eyebrow.
"Seems that Timberlands here needs an apology." Namjoon jokingly commented. "And I haven't said goodbye yet." He smiled at the girl.
Jungkook stood awkwardly as he watched Joy and Namjoon talk.
Whenever he was around his best friend, he seemed to always find himself in a situation where he had to watch Namjoon flirt and flirt and flirt. He watched Namjoon talk to girls so many times he felt that he should know how to do it by now (yet still, he was only an expert of scientific dating).
Something about this encounter with Namjoon and a girl was different though.
As if he always walked around half naked, Jungkook cleared his throat to remind the two that they still had things to discuss. "Look, next time, please remember the rules I've set up. I know we're close and everything, but I'm not trying to flash someone every other night!"
"I'm sorry," Joy said out of the blue, grimacing. "I assumed it was Joonie's room and overstepped on your space."
Jungkook looked at Namjoon like a mother asking the second sibling if the first's testimony was true. Namjoon nodded.
Jungkook sighed and waved his hand in dismissal, rolling his eyes when he heard Namjoon snicker and whisper something literally behind his back.
He made it to his room, flopping on the bed and waiting a few seconds after the front door shut before deciding to take off his towel and change.
JOY
Jungkook tread back to his room and Namjoon whispered, "He's usually fun, but he spent the whole day with his crush and couldn't take her home so he's probably crabby right now."
I grimaced. "Home on the first date? Is that what you're attempting right now, lover boy?"
Namjoon put his hands up in defense. "You were the one who had to tinkle, my little star."
I laughed aloud, throwing my head back and I silently thought this was one of those moments where people said look at how he looks at you because the way that he looked at me now was perfect.
We locked eyes and he smiled at me, a subtle gesture you would read in novels that had butterflies in my stomach. We were close to each other. I was so nervous that I held my breath, too scared I'll mess up whatever is coming my way.
This is our first date of course, so I wasn't expecting anything much. Yet, something was telling me to push forward and stay.
That's when he whispered what I didn't know I wanted to hear, "I might kiss you."
He paused, "If that's okay with you..." His words were slurred at the end as his eyes seemed to waver somewhere else.
Then we got closer and it was like our noses could touch if we moved a centimeter more.
"You would be my first." I whispered, losing all train of thought. I caught Namjoon look from my lips to my eyes.
"You might be bad at it." I smile as he leaned in.
"Don't think too much when it happens" I tried to tell myself.
But when it happened all I could do was think.
Thinking while he ever so gently grabbed my cheek to bring my lips to his. Thinking when his lips touched mine, how soft his were and if mine felt the same to him.
I asked myself where to put my hands. I asked if I had remembered to brush my teeth before the date or if my cheeks were soft enough for his hands. I eventually decided to stop thinking and enjoy the kiss.
When I did, all I could think about was...how perfect it was. His lips. The way I could feel a small smile form as he kissed me. He moved his hands from my cheek to the back of my neck and I tugged on the sleeve of his jacket as if we both meant to say closer, closer pull me closer.
I pulled away first, needing to catch a breath. His forehead still grazed mine and I felt his gaze on me. I was nervous, I admit. I was nervous to meet his eyes after pulling him against me like I couldn't get enough.
"Joy," Namjoon said, and I loved how he said it. He kissed my cheek lightly. "Joy, look at me."
I closed my eyes as I looked up, childishly opening one eye to peak at him. He chuckled and pulled me against his chest.
"Can you hear my heart beating?" Namjoon laughed. "It's crazy."
"What is?"
"I don't normally care for someone this fast. But I want to care for you."
My heart sank, in a good way, and then I smiled against his chest. "You'll have to get Taegan's permission."
I felt his chuckle against my ear, and he pulled me away so I could look up at him. "I'll ask you appropriately though." He nodded.
"I'll be waiting."
TAEGAN
"I'm waiting," I said to Joy over the phone. "They haven't said a word to me besides 'here's your table our interviewer will be right with you'."
Joy laughed on the other side of the line. "Well hurry and come home I'm hungry and we should go out for a late dinner."
I chuckled. "Sounds good. I should be home by then."
"Okay. See you then, bae!"
I could see her wink in my mind from the other side of the line and I rolled my eyes jokingly.
The second I looked down to slip my phone in my pocket I heard the chair in front of me move and someone sit down. I sat back up and was met with a brown haired boy.
"Hey—"
"You're hired!" He exclaimed, clasping his hands together, an obvious fake smile plastered on his lips.
"What? That easily?" I furrowed my eyebrows, frowning ironically. "I didn't even say anything yet."
"Yeah, we have, like, two employees therefore we are desperate." The guy shrugged. "Can you start working now? We could have your training session today."
"Uh, sure. How long?"
"Two hours. We close at nine."
I nodded.
"Great! Put on an apron and hat in the back and meet me at the register."
I went to the back and grabbed a hat then an apron, tying a knot behind my back with the strings.
"Customer up front," The brown haired boy said, his head peaking in between the opened back door. "I'm Kurt by the way."
"Taegan."
"Great," Kurt said, "We'll most likely have you up at the register. Most of the time you'll be making drinks as well, but we'll teach you that another day."
I followed Kurt to the register and looked up at the customer.
It was the girl from the party.
Immediately I ducked behind the counter, placing my hands above my head as a shield.
After our rather enjoyable time at the party, we had talked and spent the rest of the night together, but never exchanged any socials. This was totally fine because I never wanted this to go beyond one night. It seemed like a fairytale.
Too good to be true.
Of course with my luck she shows up at my work, and on my first day of work, too.
Kurt eyed me weirdly from above, signaling with his head for me to stand up. I mouthed a please no and thank God for the man because he began to take her order.
I assumed she just didn't see me, or maybe didn't recognize me, which kind of hit a spot. It shouldn't though, I was the one who didn't want it to go any further anyway.
I crawled on all fours to the back of the cafe, cursing at my embarrassing moment.
***
"Why didn't you say hi?" Joy exclaimed, smiling wide after I had told her about my encounter with — as Joy called her — mystery girl.
"Well I had promised myself I wouldn't initiate anything past that one night." I shrugged. "So I kept that promise."
My best friend looked at me as if she were uninterested. "As if. I know you want her!"
I rolled my eyes. "I don't, okay? Now what about you? How did it go with mister mafia?"
She sighed falling back against the couch, a big smile on her face. "It was everything."
"That amazing, huh?"
"For a first date."
"Kiss?"
Joy nodded, trying to hide her excitement.
"Aw, your first! The princess is growing up." I pouted jokingly, patting her on the head. She smacked my hand away, but laughed nonetheless.
"I might have been a terrible kisser but I wouldn't know because he never said anything about it which means it must have been perfect," Joy said, hand gestures and all.
"Maybe we should test it out and I'll tell you if you're bad or not." I joked, puckering my lips with a kissy sound.
She pushed my face away, laughing. "Just admit you're asking for practice!"
