Okay, if you're still here, let me start:

In the last chapter, Farun's village got attacked by bleeders—elven cultists who can drain others of their blood and life force and use it for their own benefit. In their case, to feed an artefact they call the Changeling. Bleeders are hated and distrusted by humans and elves alike, which is why they live separate.

Farun watches, horrified, as the leader of their village, Ariste is drained dry by one of the cultists. He freezes and would've been next to die, if it wasn't for Rhadoron barging into the house and killing the bleeder. Rhadaron tells Farun to flee deeper into the woods, where the vegetation is thicker and it's easier to hide, along with the rest of the villagers.

Before Farun flees with the other villagers, however, he notices one of the cultists slinking in the direction of the barn where the human prince is kept. Farun decides to turn around and go to the prince, seeing this attack as a personal test. If he isn't capable of defending the prince, as is his one job, he's not worthy of becoming a hunter.

In the end, however, it's Malte who saves Farun at the barn in a scuffle with the cultist.

Malte proves to be quite a capable fighter and would've been able to escape elven captivity a long time ago. That's not what he wants anymore, however. As Malte has already told Farun before, he thinks they're both being played. Humans and elves put up against each other to feed more blood to the Changeling. He also thinks his brother must have something to do with it, as the man is always scheming and trying to take the crown from their eldest sister. Family drama.

Since Malte just saved his life, Farun reluctantly listens to what Malte is saying. Though there's still a lot of mistrust, Farun at least respects the prince somewhat now.

Then, Malte makes a surprising offer. He will help Farun join the hunters by training him in secret and claiming that it was Farun who defended him from the bleeder cultist rather than the other way around. In exchange, he says he hopes to earn Farun's trust with this so that maybe they could fight these cultists together as they needed to stick together to win.

Like agreed on, Farun tells the elves he killed the bleeder cultist in single combat near the barn while protecting the prince. Impressed by his attitude, Rhadaron allows Farun to train with the hunters. Another reason why Rhadoron admits Farun to the hunters now is because Elder Ariste was always the one vehemently refusing it. Since the elder is dead, and the hunters unofficially now lead the village, there's nobody left to deny Farun aside from his sister Lysira, who still has her doubts. She tells Farun she thinks he doesn't have the heart to kill anyone and that joining the hunters wouldn't be good for him. Farun ignores her advice.

Malte and Farun grow a lot closer during their fighting classes and sexual tension enters the chat. Even more so when Malte learns of Farun's sister and helps her and her human lover to escape and live somewhere safe near the edge of the woods but away from the fighting. Malte shares Lysira's opinion of Farun, however. He too thinks Farun isn't meant to be a hunter. A leader perhaps, but not a brutal fighter. He asks Farun to reconsider taking this path in this manner.  Farun is annoyed by this, but takes it in stride as Malte is still helping him to learn how to fight.

Then, as things seem to be going well, Farun gets confronted by Rhadaron. Rhadaron noticed that the way Farun fights during their trainings is distinctly human and guessed that Malte was teaching Farun. Since Rhadoron is now seriously considering letting Farun join the hunters officially, Rhadaron tells Farun that he hoped the human prince would let his guard down around Farun. He noticed from the first day that the prince was attracted to Farun, and this route could possibly lead to the prince giving them information on what the humans know about the Changeling. Perhaps even what Malte's brother knows as Rhadoron also picked up that there's some drama in Malte's family in one of his scouting missions.

Farun is upset that Rhadoron didn't tell him honestly what was going on from the get go and why he was suddenly giving this chance, thinking everyone seems to have ulterior motives around him. Rhadoron also warns Farun to stay loyal to the elves. To not let his budding feeling for the human prince (which Farun vehemently denies!) cloud his judgement on what needs to be done; stop the cultists from using the Changeling against them.

The hunters are now prepared to try and steal the Changeling  artefact from the cultists as Rhadoron also believes that they will need to have it to defend themselves and drive the humans out of their woods.

There's a raid on the cultists, and Farun is allowed to come along as his first mission. In the fight, Farun comes near the Changeling and it affects him, revealing that he actually has a god-touched gift as well: his powerful senses. The way he can enhance his hearing if he focuses, and also other senses if he had trained it. Farun's power was simply so subtle and untrained and discouraged that nobody around him ever realised it was a power. Nobody except Elder Ariste, who had planned on telling Farun about his gift the moment he came of age and wanted to shield the sensitive boy from being used by the hunters in a way that he didn't have the heart for.

Rhadoron, at this point, also realises what the Changeling artefact can do (having seen what it did to Farun). They have seen that Farun can create barriers if he's attuned with the Changeling. Farun thinks they should go for a peaceful resolution for the elves; to have him make a barrier to keep the humans and cultists out until they give up. Rhadoron has another idea, however. He wants to go to the mountains, to use one of the lone wanderers (elves who can shapeshift into animals) to boosts them and help them all to shapeshift them all into dragons to destroy Wildewall. Rhadoron believes the human prince (not Malte, but Malte's other brother) will never stop his attacks unless he's killed and his army decimated. They need to strike hard to ensure humans would never think about invading elven woods again. A barrier would not do that.

Farun and Malte both oppose this of course, but are overruled and locked up while Rhadoron and most of the elven hunters and warriors travel to the mountains where the dragons live. All the remaining elves hide in the thick forest awaiting their return after they destroyed the human city.

While Rhadoron and all the other people who are able to fight are off to the mountains, Farun and Malte escape their captivity when a message arrives in the village that Farun's sister is in trouble. Malte and Farun go to the edge of the forest to rescue her together. Unfortunately, it was a ruse of Malte's older brother to lure and capture Farun. Farun thinks that Malte betrayed him to the humans as he knew about his powers and what the elves were planning. Malte swears he didn't tell his older brother anything.

Malte and Farun get taken captive by Malte's older brother and his army, and brought to the mountains where all the elves are gathering to shapeshift into dragons. The entire journey there, Farun hates Malte and thinks he's just a part of his brother's scheme. Malte's brother happily plays into this.

As they arrive at the mountains, Malte's brother finally admits he learned about Farun through interrogating a surviving cultist about Farun's gift, not from Malte. And he learned about the elves' plan from Lysira's human lover, who was threatened with having his wife killed in front of him. But, it was hilarious to see Farun treat Malte like shit during their final journey together and now they won't ever have any more time together.

In a final jab, Malte's older brother sarcastically promises Malte he'll make make sure the town knows he died in a battle for the Changeling and will remember him as a hero for humanity when he takes over the throne.

Malte's brother tries to kill Malte, but Farun, in a burst of magic saves his life with a barrier. That leads to a cute moment in which Malte tells Farun he always knew he was more of a protector and not a killer, and Farun agrees for the first time. The two share a kiss after they escape into the dangerous valley together, where the elves are gathered and in the process of shapeshifting into dragons. A process that takes several days.

Believing that the human army would attack the elves now that they were vulnerable, Farun and Malte brave the real dragons together in the valley to find the Changeling. Farun thinks that he can attune to it, saving the elves by creating a barrier around them to protect them from being attacked by the human army.

Unfortunately, the dragon turning magic is already in effect and can't be stopped while it's in progress. As Farun tries to create barrier while he is also affect by the dragon changing magic, it warps into a weird blend of both magics and traps the everyone in valley in dragon form instead.

Malte's brother didn't expect this result, but will definitely take this easy victory, not even needing his army. Since he doesn't understand entirely how this happened, he takes the Changeling, which is now dormant and no longer affecting new people because no god-touched is touching it, with him and orders for it to be stored in the castle safe, never to be touched by another soul again.

All the elves are now either trapped in the mountains or killed by humans in the woods (as the elven army never returned and never destroyed Wildewall). Malte is said to have died for the city, and is seen as a war hero among the humans but for all the wrong reasons while he is trapped alongside the elves in the mountains.

End of book.
