5: A base?

Zip's POV

When the door of the cave closed, I freaked out. All of my nightmares, my worst fears, they all crowded my mind. I had always been scared of the dark, I slept with the light in my room on I was so scared. I never told anyone though, not even my parents.

"G...g...g...guys? G...guys?" I whispered into the terrifying dark.

Then the light came.

Instantly, I recognised the type of cave. It was a survival base, build against mob and human attacks. There was a small armoury, a kitchen, beds and a water source. Luke walked to the centre and looked around.

"Wow, this place is sweet!"

"No kidding bro." Jade dumped his bag on one of the four beds and pulled off his jacket. "This place is badass!"

"Hey look at this!" Tim called. He poked his head out from the armoury, his blue and black hair flopping over his eyes. 'Armour, swords, bows and arrows!'

I walked over. "Great. I need some arrows," I said. As I reached out to grab them, I saw my hand shaking. I took a deep breath. Just calm down Zip. It's fine.

"You okay Zip?" Tim put his hand on my shoulder.

"I'm fine." I said, shrugging it off. I took off my quiver and put some of the arrows in it. "We should leave our weapons in here, and cook the meat too."

"Okay." Tim dragged his sack to the kitchen. "Pork for dinner tonight!"

I put my bow, quiver and sword in the corner and walked back out to the main room. Luke had taken off his jumper and was now arguing with Jade. I noticed their shirts: both black, Jade's with a green slime on the front, Luke with a creeper face on his back. Alex was sharpening his arrowheads, his red shirt stark against the twin's black ones. I put my bag on a bed and flopped down onto it. I closed my eyes and fell asleep, exhausted from the hunt and the chase.

"Zip, wake up."

"Wha... AH!" I sat up fast and accidentally punched Luke in the arm.

"OW! What was that for!?"

"For freaking me out. You're lucky I didn't have my sword."

Luke took a step back at this, rubbing his arm. "Yeah well... Dinner's ready."

The pork chops were slightly overcooked and dry, and they were hard to swallow. But no one felt like eating. We were all think about our families, wondering what they would think when we didn't come home. I was thinking about my dad. I had to complete my training as a warrior. He was teaching me, and he had told me how important it was to never miss a training session. Which I now had.

Alex cleared his throat. "Guys, small problem. There's four beds and five of us."

"I'm not sleeping on the floor," I said, crossing my arms.

"Me neither."

"Hey, maybe you two can share a bed." Tim suggested, pointing to Luke and Jade.

"EW, DUDE!"

"What? You're brothers!"

"Doesn't mean we like each other!"

"He's so annoying and he keeps stealing the sheets." Jade poked his twin.

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"Do not!"

"Do t.."

"Okay, okay settle down boys," I said. Jade and Luke stopped arguing. "If no one is going to sleep on the floor, then it makes sense for you two to share."

"Oh but Zip-"

"Come on really?"

I gave them both my If You Keep Arguing I'll Grab My Sword glare. They both shut their mouths.

"So no problems?"

No one said anything.

I sighed. "Then let's get some sleep."

We broke up and went to our beds. Jade and Luke had a quick and quiet squabble about which side they were going to sleep on, then all went quiet. As the light from the fire died down and the darkness gathered, I started to freak out. I pulled the sheets tightly around me, trying to take deep, slow breaths.

Above my bed, a dim light switched on as if triggered by the lack of light. It wasn't bright, but it made the dark look more like a soft grey. It calmed me and I relaxed my grip on the sheets. As the nightlight brightened the dark for me, I fell asleep.
