21: Getting ready
Alex's POV
Over the next week, Fury worked us hard. She gave us new jobs every day and would not let us relax for even a second. The first day was just punching trees (Luke hurt his hand), making a shelter, getting heaps of food and crafting wooden tools. The next day we went mining. We didn't go too deep, just enough to get cobblestone, coal and iron. Fury showed us how to make a furnace and how to smelt ores. It sounds really easy but remember that we lived in a village where Blacksmiths and Crafters did this stuff; all we did was trade.
The third day was more mining. We went deeper this time, equipped with stone pickaxes, torches and our weapons. We mined more iron, a bit of gold, some redstone and diamonds. Fury stayed above the ground, collecting the ores and putting them safely in a chest at our house and sending Wolf down into the mines to get us when it was night time. The exact same thing happened the fourth, fifth and sixth days. We would go underground in the morning and come back up at night, covered in coal dust and weighed down with multiple ores. On the seventh day, we didn't go mining. Instead, Fury made us iron armour and sent us mob hunting, specifically for endermen and skeletons. When we came back later that afternoon with bones and ender pearls, Fury had set up six armour stands with full diamond armour on all of them.
"If we're going to have diamond armour, why are we wearing iron ones?" Luke questioned as he dropped the loot in a chest.
"We don't want to wear this armour out. And when you wear it, the enchantments will act as a beacon for mobs." Fury took a helmet off one of the stands.
"We're going to enchant them?" I asked.
"Yup. Why do you think I've had you mining non-stop for the past four days?"
"Because you're mean," Tim mumbled under his breath. She smiled slightly.
"You all have a lot of experience points. You use them to get better enchantments on your armour." Fury gestured with the helmet to an enchantment table in the corner. It was surrounded by bookcases and made a faint whispering sound. "Who wants to go first?" she asked.
No one answered.
"Oh come on guys, it's not that hard."
"Have you ever enchanted anything Fury?" Jade inquired.
"No, but I've seen it been done."
I had also seen someone enchant something. When my dad enchanted my bow, he used an enchanting table first, then used enchanted books to do more enchantments. "I could give it a shot I guess," I said.
Fury tossed me the helmet. I clumsily caught it and went over to the enchantment table. It whispered as I approached it and the book flipped open, white lines of text floating towards it from the bookcases, like it was absorbing knowledge from the air. I placed the helmet on it and the book flipped a few pages. I couldn't read most of what it said, but I could read a few words:
Projectile Protection II, ᚱᛖᛋᛈᚣᚱᛖᚳᚣᚾ ᚫᚾᛞ ᛋᛏᚣᚠ
Aqua Affinity I, ᛒᛚᚫᛋᛏ ᛈᚱᚣᛏᛖᚴᚳᚣᚾ ᚫᚾᛞ
Fire Protection II, ᚫᛋ ᚫᚾᛞ ᛒᛚᚫᛋᛏ ᛈᚱᚣᛏᛖᚴᚳᚣᚾ
I chose the fire protection and the helmet glowed and started shimmering. I picked it up and I somehow knew what enchantments it had: Fire Protection II and Blast protection I. I stepped away from the enchantment table and put the helmet back on its stand.
"Good job Alex! Who's next?" Fury looked expectantly towards the others. One by one we enchanted each item of armour. Everyone also enchanted their weapons, except for me because my bow was already loaded with enchantments. By night, we were all decked out and ready for anything. Fury had even (somehow) fashioned a helmet for Wolf.
"So what do we do tomorrow?" Tim asked, admiring his shining axe. I saw the name Hanna engraved on the handle and I made a mental note to asked Tim who Hanna was.
"We start collecting stuff. I've made a bag from the leather the cows dropped. It's easier than carrying a chest around everywhere," Fury explained.
"The epic quest starts tomorrow then. I'm gonna get some sleep." Zip slid into a bed and fell asleep almost instantly, her newly enchanted diamond sword glowing beside her.
"Hey Fury, won't our enchanted weapons attract the mobs?" I questioned.
"When you use it yes, but when you're just carrying it around, no."
"Okay."
Tim yawned and stretched. "I'm gonna hit the sack too. G'night everyone."
We mumbled 'goodnight' and climbed into our beds. I leaned my bow beside my bed and closed my eyes. And I dreamed.
I was standing in a dark nether brick room. Someone was sitting in a chair in front of me, his back turned so I couldn't see his face.
"So you're about to set out on an "epic quest"?" The man laughed.
I tried to step back but I couldn't move. I tried to ask the man who he was but no sound came out of my mouth. The man laughed a sinister laugh.
"Oh don't worry Alex. You will know who I am soon enough. You are my pawn, my key to success."
I'm not a pawn! I tried to yell.
The man just laughed again. "Sweet dreams Alex."
My eyelids became heavy and I dropped to the ground, hearing the man speak one more time before I fell asleep.
"You won't remember this when you wake up."
