20: Losing Hope

Alex's POV

We ran until it was too dark to go any further. Fury helped us climb a nearby tree  and we all fell asleep, exhausted both physically and mentally. We had no food, no blocks, no torches, no ores, nothing except our weapons. We knew what we needed to do, but we didn't have the means to do it.

"So what do we do now?" Jade asked as we sat on the top of the tree the next morning. It was a clear sunny day, but the bright sky had no effect on our gloomy disposition.

"We do what we were always doing. Stop the mobs from becoming stronger," Zip said.

"With no supplies? Nothing but weapons? Starting from scratch?" Tim ran his hand through his blue and black hair. "We've never done that before. It's impossible."

"No it's not," Fury said. She looked like she hadn't got any sleep during the night. "I started from scratch when I was 7, I know how to do it."

"But it'll take ages to get the materials we need to get this stuff. Even if we had the best supplies in the world, we wouldn't be able to do this," Tim argued.

"Why? What do we need?" Fury inquired.

Zip pulled out pieces of paper. "I wrote down what we need and where it is. Most of them are easy to get, but the others... well, I'll just tell you. We need sugar, glowstone dust, several ender pearls, bone meal, the Axe of the Zombie King, an enchantment table and an Ender Crystal."

"So we have to wander around Minecraftia, break into the Zombie Kingdom, go mining and travel to the End where we will have to kill the Ender Dragon to get back to the Overworld," Jade summed up.

"I just don't see how it's possible." Tim put his head in his hands.

I knew from his body language that he had given up hope. So had Jade and Luke. I was on the verge of giving up too, but I was trying to find some shred of hope to cling to, no matter how small it was. I lowered my head. It did seem impossible. How could 6 kids  do all of this?

"What have we got to lose?" Fury asked.

I jerked my head up. "What did you say?" I croaked.

"What have we got to lose? All of us have lost our family, our home, everything we had."

"You haven't Fury. You still have a home and you've got Wolf too," I pointed out.

Fury glanced down at her ever present dog, who looked lovingly into her eyes. "Yeah I do." She looked away from Wolf and locked eyes with me. "But I enjoy being with you guys so much more, even if it means near-death experiences."

"So what? What does that change?" Luke blurted. "It's still impossible Fury."

"It changes everything Luke. We don't have anything to lose, so we give it everything we've got! We can't lose more than we already have."

"We can die Fury. Then all of this would have been for nothing."

Fury jumped up. "If we give up now, then it would have all been for nothing anyway. Dax, Zano, Styk and the entire village would have died for nothing. We need to at least try, for them. For everyone who has died from the mobs." She put her hand out. "Come on guys. Let's give it a shot."

Zip slowly stood up. "Okay. For Dad." She put her hand on top of Fury's.

I stood up too. "For my parents," I said, my hand joining theirs.

"For my parents." Jade put out his hand.

"For my sister." Tim's hand went on top.

Luke was the last to stand. "For my friends," he said, his hand joining ours. With a smile, I realised that he meant us. The seven of us. And we made a silent agreement: To fight by each other's side, to defend each other, and to finish what we started.

"So where do we start?" I queried.

"Together," Zip said.

"Actually, we start by collecting wood. Then we make some basic tools, go mining for coal and cobblestone, make better tools, get iron and make armour and swords, go mining for diamonds, then..."

"Okay, okay Fury."
