19: Bad Luck

Fury's POV

We had been sitting in this dark, cold and small room for a few hours now, reading the musty old books that Atyi had gotten for us. We had found nothing useful, and I was just about ready to give up.

"Are you reading Fury?" Tim asked.

I realised that I had been looking at the same page for several minutes now. It was a picture of a skeleton looking mob, but it had three heads and it was smoking. "Uh..."

"Haven't you already read this book Fury?" Jade picked up a book with a faded red label.

"Ummm..."

"And you seem to be looking at the pictures a lot," Zip added.

I sighed. 'Busted'  I thought. "Fine, you got me. I can't read."

"WHAT? BOOKS ARE LIFE!" Alex shouted. He then covered his mouth in shock. I was a little shocked too. I had never heard Alex talk loudly.

"Then how did you read Zip's dad's note?" Tim asked.

I shrugged. "I can read some words, but nothing like this," I said, gesturing to the thick books on the table.

"Fury do you want to go and do something else, since you can't really help here?" Zip suggested.

"Uh sure." I walked back to the minecart track and rode one up. I was very glad to be out of the claustrophobic cave, but a little voice inside of me said 'Did they just kick you out? Did they just tell you to go away?'  "Shut up me," I muttered.

I reached the top, hopped out of the minecart then walked back out to the sun. Wolf came running up to me, barking in all his fury. Smiling, I knelt and scratched behind his ears. I had to leave him behind, as he didn't like minecarts or caves.

"Why are you up here?" I looked up as Dax approached me.

"I'm not much help down there," I said, standing up.

"Hm. Want to go mob hunting with me?" Dax asked. I noticed that she had her bow over her shoulder and two quivers of arrows.

"Why not." I already had both of my swords. I always have my swords with me. Dax and I walked side by side into the forest, Wolf sniffing at the trail ahead of us.

"We need to keep the mob population down since many people in the village are not fighters," Dax explained, picking off a zombie.

"Can't you just train them?" I asked, blocking a skeleton arrow.

"Oh geez, thanks never would have thought of that," Dax said sarcastically, shooting the skeleton in the head.

"Just saying."

Dax huffed. "We tried. It didn't work."

I shrugged. It didn't matter to me too much. "So this is what you do every day? Hunt mobs and save random people from mobs?"

"No. Most days I have lessons on maths, reading, mob science, history, geography and knitting."

I snorted, trying not to laugh. I imagined this girl warrior sitting in a rocking chair, knitting a small pair of socks. "Knitting?"

"Don't laugh or the next arrow's coming for you."

"Okay sorry. I don't laugh, you don't shoot me. We're good," I said, still suppressing a laugh.

"I'm serious."

"Okay okay! Just so you know there's a creeper up ahead."

Dax used two arrows and we moved on. We encounter a few more skeletons and a really short zombie that was riding a chicken for some reason.

"Looks like that's all the mobs. Less than normal, but never mind." Dax picked up the meat that the chicken dropped.

"I'll double check," I said, walking over to the nearest tree. I scaled up it a few blocks then looked around. "There's two over near the birch, a creeper next to that pig over there and a spider right next to me." I swung my sword and the spider dropped.

"How can you do that?" Dax asked, picking off the mobs I pointed out.

"I've lived in a forest for most of my life," I told her, climbing back down. "So now we head back?"

"Yep."

Wolf, who had been lying on the ground, suddenly stood up. He sniffed the air, growling softly.

"What is it Wolf?" I asked.

He just growled, looking and sniffing. Then he became stock still, nose quivering, pointing into the forest. I frowned. He's only done that once before but surely...

"What's wrong?" Dax asked.

I shushed her, listening to the sounds in the forest. A pig snorting, birds chirping, a portal whomping, a cow eating, the clatter of bones and Dax shifting uncomfortably.

"Portal," I whispered.

"What?"

"Wolf. Follow," I commanded Wolf.  He ran in the direction he was pointing, Dax and I following silently.

"Where are we going?" Dax whispered to me.

I ignored her. Wolf lead us to the sound of the portal and I gasped as I saw one of my nightmares become a reality. A clearing had been made and a Nether portal dominated one side. Mobs were coming out of the portal, joining the mobs that were already gathered. There were black skeletons armed with swords, some sort of mob that was a cross between a zombie and a pig and yellow smoking things that had yellow sticks rotating around them.

"What are they?" Dax asked.

"Mobs from the Nether," I whispered back.

She gasped. "I remember them now! But they normally don't come through the portals, and not in this number. Unless..."

"Unless he's ordering them to," I finished her sentence.

"We need to get back and warn the village," Dax said, running back through the forest. Wolf and I followed her, easily keeping up. Dax ran to her house.

"Dad! Nether mobs are massing in the forest!" She shouted.

There was no reply.

"Dad?" Dax called again.

"Is he home?" I asked.

"Yeah, he was doing work. Maybe he's in the study." She walked to another room.

I felt uncomfortable just standing there, so I also walked to another room. The room was obviously the kitchen. It had a bench, a furnace, a cauldron and a crafting bench. There was also a chest in the corner. I was about to walk out when something caught my eye. Caught in the lid of the chest was a small purple thing. I took a closer look at the thing. It was like a snowflake, but it was purple and made a faint whomping sound.

"Ender fragment," Dax said, sneaking up behind me. I jumped slightly but she didn't notice. "An enderman came here?"

"What's an Ender fragment?" I asked.

"When something teleports, it goes through space. That creates Ender fragments, like this one."

"So something must have teleported here," I stated. "And it was an enderman?"

"They're the only ones who can teleport. And I'll wager that they took my dad." Dax's voice was deadly.

"How can you be so sure?"

"He never leaves the house during the day. And there were pieces of paper all over the study floor."

"So what now?" I asked.

"We need to warn the village. Come on, the bell!" She ran back out of the house. I didn't follow her this time, instead going to the building that led down to the library. When I burst in, Luke was just coming up the ladder.

"Hey Fury! We found it!" he said gleefully. All my other friends came up the ladder.

"You found what?" I asked, forgetting about the mobs for a moment.

"The way to reverse the curse! But it's not gonna be easy," Zip said, pulling a few pieces of paper out of her jacket. She was interrupted by the loud sound of a bell ringing.

"What is that?" Jade yelled, clamping his hands over his ears.

"There are Nether mobs coming. We have to help protect the village," I quickly explained. "Dax is warning everyone, but most people can't fight."

The door of the building was pushed open and Dax and a few other people came running in.

"Bring up the staff and then seal the library!" She ordered. Then she noticed us. "You got what you needed?"

"Yes. Where do you want us to go?" Tim asked, getting his axe ready.

"You're not going to fight," Dax said.

"What? Why not?"

"You know how to make the mobs weak again. You have to do that as soon as possible and you can't afford to be delayed."

"We can't just leave you!" Zip exclaimed. I agreed with her for once.

"You'll never beat the mobs," I told Dax.

She smiled. "I know. But we'll give you as much time as we can to get you to get clear. Don't fail. I believe in you guys."

"We won't," Zip said. "Come on, let's go."

She lead the way out of the building. We all ran away, like cowards, to the forested hills. We climbed up the hills, not stopping. When we reached the top, the others kept going, but I stopped. Looking back on the village, I saw fires burning, consuming buildings. The Nether mobs ran, slaughtering everyone they came across. I had ran away and left them alone, at the mercy of the Nether mobs. Just like I had many years ago. I closed my eyes and I saw a familiar face. He told me to run too, like Dax and I had obeyed both of them. I opened my eyes again. I hoped that history didn't repeat itself. I hoped that Dax didn't die like...

"Fury! Come on!" Jade called.

I shook my head and followed the others.
