Historical Analysis

While working on designs for Mitsuri's rendition of Romeo and Juliet, Giyuu gets a surprise visitor.

-linebreak-

Ever since Giyuu first became a staff member in this Academy, he's been constantly bugged by the local drama teacher about helping her with her plays and musicals. And every year he always gives in and gets to work on designing ideas for the outfits and backdrops, it's practically become a tradition at this point. It's also a tradition that he gets his students to help out to paint the backgrounds for extra credit.

God knows Zenitsu needs some. But that's beside the point.

Right now, he had already bent to what Mitsuri wanted and was now working on creating a draft of the outfits for the play, he had already done a first draft of the backdrops so he'd work on the final draft after he confirmed it with her but she was absent today so he was spending his time working on the outfits now.

Tomioka heard a clatter near him, like the sound of something, dropping but he ignored it, letting his hand doing the talking as he worked. Usually, he'd have something playing in the background but he wasn't in the mood right now, it was after school so he could probably listen to whatever he wanted without interruptions but the problem was he couldn't find anything good to watch. So, in a pitiful silence, he worked ignoring the surroundings around him until he couldn't. For example:

"So this is what you've been working on," Rengoku suddenly says as he appears over his shoulder, to say he was surprised was an understatement, but aside from that, the history teacher grins as he grabbed the sketchbook with one hand and looks it over. He whistles as he scans over the outfits. "These are pretty accurate the era it comes from could do with a little tweaking but other than that it's fantastic! Now about the backdrops," He flips the page with the corner of his thumbs and Giyuu lets out something akin to a squawk and reaches for the book.

"Rengoku! Give it back, c'mon, give it- " He leans forwards in his chair, his fingers graze the edge of his book as he now leans fully over the arm of the chair, bracing himself with his hand half-haphazardly gripping at the edge of the desk. Right as he's about to grab the book, Kyojuro moves to the side flicking to another page with a small hum. Leaning a little too far, in a matter of only 2 seconds his hand loses its grip, the chair starts to spin, he loses his balance and goes toppling over to the floor with the chair in tow.

He groans as the chair falls on him and uses his forearms to push himself upwards. "Tomioka!" He hears some clamor and the chair is lifted off of his back even though he could have done it himself. "Thanks but I-" There's an arm around his and he's practically being heaved off of the floor.

"Here!"

"Jesus christ- " He spluttered as Kyojuro practically lifted him up off the floor with just an arm. To prevent himself from stumbling he braced him by gripping tightly at Rengoku's sleeve. After he caught his bearings, he let go of the slightly taller man's sleeve and pat it with a nervous huff. "You... You are very strong,"

Kyojuro just gave him a grin that could only be comparable to the sun. "Thank you!" He nearly shouted with his hand on his hips. "I try very hard to maintain a strict training regimen!"

"I can tell," He said exasperated, "But can have my sketchbook back now?"

"Oh," Kyojuro perks up, "Here," He almost roughly pushes it into his chest, he looks away from him with a sheepish smile, scratching the back of his neck. "Sorry about that by the way, you don't need to go to the nurse's office, do you? Because if you do, I- "

"Rengoku I'll be fine,"

"Right, I don't think anything can beat drinking paint water," The history teacher snickered,

"I almost drank it, I spit it out in the last second."

"So what Kocho said was true,"

"She said she wouldn't tell anyone,"

"You should know her better than that,"

"Weren't you supposed to be helping me with the play Kanroji wanted to make?" He blandly said, sitting back in his chair and rolling it to his desk. He placed his sketchbook on his desk and flipped to the previous page he was on.

"Right! Alright, so I gathered some books talking about the 13th century through the 16th since there's no defined time period for it except that it's in Verona, Italy, and also I found some good reference pictures on Google which I would highly recommend since it's much more easier to get what you're looking for but the book goes more in-depth, however."

"But when looking into it, you have to consider that both families were highly religious so when making the outfit design and backdrops you should consider that Europe was traditionally Catholic during those times as well. While the outfits aren't bad nor the background they could do with a little tweaking according to the era,"

"Alright then," The art teacher leans back in his chair. "What should I tweak," He asks, grabbing a pencil and tapping it against the table.

"Well, considering both families in the play were rich, their outfits should look more... How do I say this? Ridiculous, along with wearing fancy jewelry, I would also look at how other movies make the outfits and surroundings since they usually stay true to the source material."

"Where am I going to get that?"

"I have a movie or two about Romeo and Juliet, if you want to watch it with me and Kanroji you can."

"I'll... Think about it," He quietly mulls. Kyojuro shrugs, stuffing a hand in his pocket. "Well then, I'll let you think about it. You have until the end of this week so I'd help if you tell me in advance," Giyuu answers with a hum.

"Alrighty then! The books you need are here and if you need anyone to check them I'll always be here!" He nods and goes back to drawing. "I know Rengoku,"

"Just making sure," The history teacher smiled at him and turned on his heels to leave. Giyuu turned towards his sketchbook, pencil hovering over it before he turned towards Kyojuro one last time.

"Oh, and Rengoku?" Rengoku looked over his shoulder at him, head tilting slightly to the side. "Yes?"

"Thank you..." Giyuu muttered, turning back to where he used to be looking. Kyojuro's smile grew brighter and he nodded at him. "It's no problem Tomioka, it's my pleasure to help out," And then he left, the books he had lent to Tomioka still on the art teacher's desk.

A/N: Do not steal someone's sketchbook. That is very annoying which is coming from someone who draws.

Fun facts:
