"Hey, why the long face Jim?" Jim glanced up from his tablet to see his wife standing in front of him with her hands behind her back.
"Oh nothing." He replied quietly. Claire frowned a bit and gave him the 'don't you even think about lying to me' face she always pulled when he lied.
"Jim..."
"Fine, fine! Merlin told me I couldn't have kids!" Jim groaned. "He said that because I wasn't a troll or a human, I won't be able to reproduce with with a female human or a female troll no matter how hard I tried!" Jim groaned, tossing the tablet to the side and buried his face into his hands.
"Well that's a load of crap, and how would he even know this?" Claire asked as she sat herself down next to her husband. She felt his arm gently wrap around her waist and hugged her tightly.
"I don't even know Claire...but what if it is true?" Jim mumbled as he lifted his head up to look at her sadly. "I really am sorry, I know after all these talks about raising a family now that we've gotten things set up you were really excited for a baby. But...but what if we did have one and it comes out all wrong?"
"Wrong how?"
"Like...what if it can't be in the sun even if it looks perfectly human? Or-or what if they come out not being able to eat human food or troll food properly? Or what if you-"
"Jim!" Jim stopped ranting to give his wife a sheepish look. "Nothing bad will ever happen to out baby if we were ever able to conceive one. If anything, I'd hope the baby was born healthy no matter how it looks. I wouldn't care if it came out looking like a troll or human, or even like you."
Like him...god he hoped the kid wouldn't ever come out with his conditions, it wouldn't even be fair to the poor thing! Claire gently kissed his cheek and hugged his side.
"By the way, happy Father's Day." She whispered.
"But...I'm not a father, and it's not even Father's day yet." Jim pointed out with a small frown. "I told you Claire, Merlin said-"
"Well Merlin isn't always be right about everything." Claire interrupted as she handed his a card that she had been hiding behind her back.
Jim carefully took it from her and opened it to find a small pink and white stick taped on the paper with the words "Can't wait to see you daddy!" scribbled next to it in Claire's neat handwriting. Jim felt his throat close up as his eyes began to water with tears. He dropped the card onto the couch and jumped up, lifting Claire with him as he cried into her hair.
"I'm going to be a dad! Oh my god Claire I'm going to be a dad!" Jim cried as he jumped up and down excitedly. "I-I gotta tell Blinky! Oh and Draal and Nomura and Notenrique too! I gotta tell the whole clan of Trollmarket!"
"I...I think we should wait a bit longer to tell them." Claire said when Jim stopped jumping long enough to set her down on the couch. "It's kind of a bit early and...Merlin might..."
"He wouldn't, I won't let him." Jim promised as he knelt down to carefully place his head on her lap, taking care not to let his horns poke her stomach, and placed an ear to her belly. "Can it hear me yet?"
"Not yet, but in a few weeks they will." Claire chuckled and ran a hand through Jim's thick but soft hair, earning a content sigh from him. "I'm only a little over month pregnant Jim, and maybe in a few weeks we can see the gender too."
"I...I want it to be a surprise." Jim admitted. "But no matter the gender, I'm going to be very happy with this baby, and I'm going to teach them a lot of things."
"Like how to be a better cook than their grandmother?" Claire joked.
"Yes, that and a lot more things." Jim chuckled. Was this how his father felt when his mom was pregnant with him? "If the baby is a boy we're not going to call him Jim Lake the Third are we?"
"Well we're not going to name the baby Petunia either if it's a girl." Claire replied. "That name ready went to a flour bag."
"Maybe...after that one great aunt you used to look up to? The actress one?"
"My tia Laura?" Claire taped her chin thoughtfully before nodding. "You know, I do remember telling her once that if I had a baby girl I'd name her after her."
"And maybe for a boy...Aaron, like my grandfather." Jim suggested. "And Jim for his middle name, and Barbara for Laura's middle name."
"Laura Barbara Lake-Nuñez, Aaron Jim Lake-Nuñez, I like the sound of those." Claire said softly, giving her husband a smile. Jim smiled back before placing a hand on her stomach where their undeveloped child was.
"I know you can't really hear me right now, but I wanted you to know that daddy loves you very much. You're a little miracle to us and I can't wait to finally hold you in my arms." He murmured softly. "And you're very lucky to have a mother like your mommy, and she loves you very much as well. We'll see you in a few months my little warrior."
