Tell me how we're not alike
But we work so well
And we don't even know why
Funny how the stars crossed right
Cause we work so well
And we don't even know why
You can call it fire and ice
But we work so well
And we don't even know why

Kai grasped the redhead's hands in his comparitively warmer ones. He held them closer to his chest as he gazed into the girl's deep, blue eyes. Silence was the only sound passing between them, filled with a suspense so overwhelming, it could make a mountain crumble to dust.

At least that's the severity Kai thought he felt.

"Skylor, I really, really like you but this is something I have to disagree with you on."

The Master of Amber pouted, the hopeful twinkle in her eyes going out quicker than you could say 'Ninjago'. She gently tried to pull her hands away from Kai's chest. The brunet didn't let go but lowered their hands just to comply to her tugging.

Skylor gazed up pleadingly at the hot-head. "But I thought you said we would always support each other's decisions, respect opinions and allow preferences."

Kai sighed, regretting his choice of words without giving them a second thought. "I know what I said," he muttered, trying not to sound like too much of a statement-changer, "but that was before I knew what your preferences actually were."

The girl scowled, successfully retrieving her hands and folding her arms. "Well, that's what happens when you rush things. Although, cats shouldn't be that much of a problem."

Consequently, the two of them glanced down at their feet where a furry, white feline was padding about them, eventually coming to rub itself against Kai's ankles. The boy flinched, shifting away. The cat mewed its displeasure and turned to Skylor instead who only smiled lovingly at it.

Kai winced. "You don't understand. I hate cats!"

Skylor looked offended if not horrified. She immediately crouched down to pet the cat as if Kai's words had somehow physically hurt it. "Anyone who hates cats is a monster, Kai. You are a monster."

The brunet frowned. His face twisted in disgust when the cat began licking Skylor's hand, its fluffy tail flailing about in delight. "Ew! Sky, don't let it lick you!"

The redhead rolled her eyes. She caressed the cat's white coat of fur affectionately while glaring at her admirer on the contrary. "Stop calling her 'it'. Her name's Silverbell."

"You already named it?" asked an incredulous Kai who was of the opinion that animals should never be named because they were incapable of caring for anything beyond eating food and bringing chaos.

"She needs a fitting name if she's gonna be going to the cat shelter," Skylor replied distractedly, much more occupied with the cat's playful paw swiping.

Kai made sure he stood a good feet away from the creature. "Listen, if you want me to sign up for a . . . duck feeding society, I'd be glad to do so. But, cat shelters—" here he paused to shudder "—aren't really my thing."

Skylor looked unimpressed but then again, she never really expected Kai to come up with smart arguments. "There's no such thing as a duck feeding society."

"That's besides the point!"

Silverbell glanced up innocently at the redhead as she sighed and stood to her feet. Assuming that playtime was over, the cat went back to chasing around the little ants scrambling around on the concrete sidewalk.

Skylor purposefully stepped closer to Kai who only raised an eyebrow in response. She placed both her arms on the brunet's shoulders and held her hands behind his head. Kai simply stood there awkwardly while the girl stared at him with a smirk adorning her lips.

After a brief moment of silence, Skylor spoke. "Do you know what's one of the reasons I like you?"

Finding something to say with a confidence he was familiar with, Kai grinned teasingly. "I'm so darn handsome and good-looking?"

Skylor gave a derisive chuckle and shook her head making Kai drop his smug expression. "No. It's because whenever I look at you, I get reminded of cats."

Definitely –definitely not the answer Kai was expecting so his next reply was a bit predictable.

"What?!"

"Yeah," Skylor muttered, playfully hitting her pointer finger on Kai's nose. "It's so obvious. You're careful about who comes near you. You're very picky about who you trust. You're always grooming yourself and you hate water."

Kai was about to protest but Skylor grabbed the sides of his face and brought it closer to hers. Their gazes locked onto each other's before Skylor said, "You even have amber eyes like a cat's"

The girl was laughing by the time Kai pulled himself free from her hold. He grumpily moved away from Skylor and pouted at her like a toddler not wanting to leave the playground.

"Let me get this straight," he finally exclaimed, sounding ticked off. "You are comparing this gorgeous person," he said, gesturing at himself, "to the one animal specie I hate the most."

"Bingo, brother," Skylor replied indifferently, casually inspecting her nails.

"And," Kai continued, "despite my loving you because you're beautiful, confident and a whole sass queen, you only like me because I remind you of cats?"

Skylor glanced up at that and scowled. "I said it's one of the reasons."

But Kai wasn't hearing her. He put on a dramatically hurtful face and began whining. "I've been played," he bursted out, hand over his heart and eyes on the heavens. "O' First Spinjitzu Master, why? What did I do to deserve this?"

Skylor breathed out loudly through her nose in an exasperated manner, glancing down at the cat. Silverbell returned the look and Skylor could swear there was a hint of annoyance at Kai's overacting in the green orbs.

The brunet was still going on about the adversities of his life when his girlfriend approached closer and yanked on one of his brown spikes of hair. This caused Kai to stop his wailing and stumbled back a little.

"Enough with the theatrics, fire boy," Skylor announced, shoving a cat carrier into the boy's hands, earning an indignant exclamation. "Help me get Silverbell to the shelter."

"Nya's as weird as you," Kai said, annoyance seeping into his tone as he observed the wire-mesh gate of the carrier. "She likes cats too."

"Believe me," the Master of Amber stated, bending down to cradle the cat in her arms. "If Nya was a guy, I would definitely date her." She tried to keep a straight face at the look on Kai's face but failed.

"Skylor!" was all Kai could scream at the snickering young woman. The brunet could tell if she was joking or not but at times he felt like Skylor had never loved him seriously in the first place.

"What?" Skylor giggled, trying to prevent Silverbell from jumping down out of her hold. "You don't like the idea of me dating your sister? C'mon, I can't be worse than Jay, can I?"

The Master of Fire gave her a glare that was violent enough to tear holes in the very sides of a volcano. But, like always, it was powerless against the redhead's cockiness that had bested Kai's countless times.

He thought of a new approach, one that could benefit both of them. He knew he was terrible at negotiating but it was worth a shot. He tried to appear lackadaisical when he voiced his proposition. "I'll push aside my hate for cats and sign up at the shelter in return for a teensy-weensy thing."

"A bargain, huh?" Skylor replied, a challenging smile already forming on her lips. "You're playing with a businesswoman, sweetie. Tread carefully."

Kai huffed. "Relax. It isn't something that big. I said it was teensy-weensy."

"Name your price then."

"I'll do it . . ." Kai articulated, slowing down the pace of his speech for increased suspense. " . . . for a kiss."

Skylor took no time in shaking her head and replying with, "No."

"Oh, come on!" Kai yelled, almost dropping the carrier in his fury. "It's been forever since the last time you kissed me and even that was on the cheek!"

"So?" Skylor shrugged, showing no emotions in the slightest. "Who's keeping score?"

"I am!"

Skylor opened her mouth to point out that there was really no need for him to do that but she eventually decided to take pity on the brunet's failing but desperate attempts at persuasion.

"Very well," she agreed. Kai's face lit up to such an extent, it almost made the sun shy away in embarrassment that it could not shine as bright.

"But you promise to help me at the shelter later on, right?" Skylor asked one more time to leave no room for take backs, watching as Kai placed the carrier down on the sidewalk

"I promise," the boy nodded, crossing his heart and raising a hand as if he was taking an oath. "Trust me now?"

Without waiting for an answer, Kai moved nearer to the girl who allowed him to place his hands on her waist and pull her close. Eyelids lowering, the brunet leaned in for the kiss. His brow furrowed when he heard a prankish squeal and felt his nose itch. In a few seconds, his lips were blocked by something furry and wet.

Kai wished he hadn't opened his eyes. Silverbell's white face and huge green eyes were pushed up against his and her little pink tongue casually licked the tip of his nose.

If it was possible for young men to literally scream like girls then Kai would very well be in the Guinness Book Of World Records.

Uncontrollable laughter was what filled Kai's steaming ears as he tried to calm his breathing and heart rate. He spat out some cat hair and gagged, trying hard to keep his inners settled to avoid vomiting in the public. Cheeks flushed at the way he had screamed in front of his girlfriend, Kai shielded his face and turned away.

The cat confusedly cocked her head at the sputtering male, clearly wondering why the human was so terrified of her. She hopped down on the ground and sat in the corner, eyeing the brunet with interest.

"Looks like Silverbell's in love with you," Skylor joked, trying to lighten up Kai's mood. The boy wiped his lips with the back of his hand, not answering her.

Skylor saw he wasn't keen on taking the joke and so proceeded to apologize. "I'm so sorry," she wheezed, managing to get words between her giggles. "But you can't expect me to be serious right now."

When Kai spoke, he sounded worse than a wounded animal, disappointment evident in his voice. "Yeah, you're right. I can't."

Not sparing Skylor a glance, Kai assumed a crestfallen countenance and began trudging down the sidewalk, head bent and hands stuffed into his pockets. He made sure to sag his shoulders enough to display that he really was hurt by all of this.

However, before he could get the chance to fully put on a depressing show, he felt himself being tugged backwards. His face was pulled down and this time, he was grateful when actual lips came in contact with his. The kiss was short and sweet and both of them were blushing by the time they pulled apart.

"I keep forgetting that you don't like jokes that much," Skylor murmured, a humorous glint in her eyes. "And that you always need something to pacify your crankiness."

"Thank you for noticing," Kai replied, attempting to sound haughty. Skylor only laughed in response and the brunet couldn't help but blithely shove her away, smiling in spite of himself.

"Next stop, the shelter," the redhead announced after all the grinning and blushing was over. "You have to keep up your end of the bargain."

Kai nodded half-heartedly, realizing that a much difficult task awaited him; making friends with –shudder– cats. He held the carrier gate open as Skylor gently placed Silverbell inside before snapping it shut. After checking to see she was properly locked in, the two made their way down to the car at the end of the street.

As Skylor walked onwards, talking about their future plans as volunteers at the shelter, Kai wondered how they were still together. Being very different from one another, most of their conversations would end up in arguments with Kai complaining like a baby and Skylor trying to keep things from getting out of hand.

Maybe they just worked well that way. They were like two differently shaped pieces of a puzzle with only one end that could fit with each other. And surprisingly, that bridge or connection was still intact. And they didn't even know why.  They didn't need to know why. Sometimes fate never gives you reasons for why something's happening.

Kai felt the cat shuffling inside the carrier and he lifted it up to his face. He peered in through the wire-mesh, a pair of glowing green eyes staring back from the semi-darkness. The two simply discerned each other before Kai broke the silence.

"Try not to steal my girl, kitty."

Silverbell mewed back and Kai took it as a 'yes'. Satisfied, he lowered the carrier back to his side and jogged to keep up with the redhead. He reached her and wordlessly slung an arm around her shoulders. The two walked in silence till they made it to the car.

Skylor smirked at the brunet from over the roof of the vehicle as they were about to enter from their respective doors. "Still though, you kissed a cat."

Kai was sure she was never going to let him live it down for a long time.
