"Lola Dorothy!" Cole exclaimed like a little child, gently wrapping his strong, muscular arms around a plump old woman who was busy flipping pancakes.
The woman, in her surprise, jerked up the spatula causing the pancake to go flying in the air. It would've made a parabolic arc and landed straight in the waste basket if it weren't for Cole who instinctively reached out a hand and caught it.
He took a bite just as the woman turned around to reprimand whoever had scared her. Cole moaned in delight as he gulped down the morsel. "Mmm, your pancakes are still good as ever, Lola."
The woman stood there, astounded at the young man before her. Then, her memory finally kicked in.
"Colvin!" The woman shrieked in happiness as she pulled Cole down to her short height to hug him. "Mumunti kong pebble! (My little pebble!)"
Cole chuckled as he tightened his own arms around her once more, patting her back lovingly.
The old woman grabbed his cheeks and strafed his face with kisses. She then leaned back and gestured at his tall form in amazement. "Sa inyo apos y malaki at mataas! At malaking! (You've grown so tall! And big!)"
"Hindi na rin masama ang sarili, Lola (Not looking bad yourself, Lola)," Cole commented with a smirk to which his grandmother tittered and playfully hit his arm.
"Um, hi?" came an uncertain voice from behind the reunion. Cole and his grandmother twisted around to find the rest of the Ninja standing awkwardly in the doorway of the kitchen.
Jay's eyes widened at the pancakes being prepared and he forgot his manners for a minute. "Ooh, pancakes!"
Lloyd nudged him, causing him to immediately refrain from rushing inside to try some of the food on the kitchen island.
"Guys!" Cole waved the half-eaten pancake at them and bade them to enter. "Meet my grandmother!"
The remaining five Ninja slowly made their way towards the duo, greeting the old woman with friendly smiles. Cole brought her forward, exceedingly excited for them all to meet.
"Lola, ang mga ito sa pamilya at mga kaibigan (Lola, these are my best friends and family)," Cole informed Dorothy as she shook Zane's hand.
The woman commented everyone on basically everything that she acknowledged. She especially took an interest in Kai's hair and kept asking if she could feel it with her hand. Kai, glad that someone appreciated his hairstyle, gave her full permission to do so, much to the others' amazement.
Dorothy seemed curious as to how he managed to keep it all spiked up and would always steer the conversation back to it.
"It's all the wonders of hair-gel, Mrs Delfino," Kai revealed as if he had unlocked the true meaning of life.
"Ah, I see," she whispered fascinatedly, eyeing the styled spikes with adoration. Kai sent a smug look at the other Ninja as Dorothy continued to praise his hair.
"Really, darling, you look like a parkupino," she remarked which made Kai immediately drop his smile. Cole started snickering, trying to muffle the sound with his fist.
"What?" Kai glared at the Master of Earth who was getting confused looks from his grandmother too. "What does that mean?"
"It means . . ." Cole suppressed his chuckles halfway between the statement. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. It means hedgehog."
This sent all the occupants of the kitchen into fits of laughter except Kai and Dorothy. The brunet pouted in annoyance while the old woman urgently patted Cole on the shoulder.
"Did I say something wrong, mahal?"
"No, Mrs Delfino." Lloyd stifled his giggles when Cole seemed unable to respond. "You actually said the right thing."
"Aw, pish-posh," she flapped a hand perfunctorily. "Enough with this 'Mrs' business. Call me Lola."
Just then, a young boy of nine dashed into the room and made a beeline for the Master of Earth. "Kuya Cole!"
The latter was stunned for a moment due to the sudden impact but quickly recovered, a huge grin on his face as he ruffled up the boy's jet black locks. "Archie? Ikaw ba yan? (Is that you?)"
"Oo, ako ito! (Yeah, it's me!)" The boy looked up at the taller male with a big smile, a gap in the lower row of teeth.
"The last time I saw you, you were only four!" Cole exclaimed in amazement as he took in the comparitively older appearance of his younger cousin.
"Really?" Nya voiced out loud, catching everyone's attention. "You've been away for that long?"
"Cole used to visit us with his mother, my daughter, Lilly," Dorothy explained as she handed Archie a plate stacked with pancakes.
"After she passed away, his visits became less frequent." Disappointment dripped from Dorothy's voice and Cole moved to put a comforting arm around her. "Lou told us it was because he had a busy job and Cole had to focus more on dance school and such nonsense."
"But four years ago, this naughty boy vanished completely." Dorothy narrowed her eyes accusingly at Cole who smiled and shook his head.
"I told you over the phone, Lola," Cole began, taking another bite of his pancake. "I became a ninja. There was no time to visit you."
"Fiddlesticks!" the woman tutted. "Are you telling me that you couldn't fly over to Matsunai village in your sky ship and visit your Lola Dorothy?"
Cole gave an amused laugh, trying to weasel his way out of the blame. "That's not what–"
"But then his oldest cousin, Hildegard's engagement drew near and I said to him: Mahal, if you don't come to her engagement party, I will see to you personally!"
"How could I miss Hildegard's engagement, Lola?" Cole questioned, finally finishing up his morning snack. "She's like a big sister to me. That's why I dragged my friends all the way to Matsunai."
As if on cue, a curious, female voice issued from outside the kitchen. "Cole?"
Everyone turned to the door to see a young woman with almond eyes and flowing ebony hair that cascaded down her back. Thin lips, tinted pink, were stretched into a smile and it seemed to be the prettiest feature on her bright face. Kai would be lying if he said he didn't find her gorgeous.
"Até Hilly!" Cole stepped forward in order to reach the girl.
"Ahh!" she gave a short, excited scream, rushing forwards to meet Cole as well. "I can't believe my lil' bro muffin has finally made it!"
"Bro muffin?" Lloyd repeated aloud dubiously as the two embraced.
"I have to say, Cole's family gives him weird nicknames," Jay whispered in response.
"It seems Cole has very loving relations with his maternal family," Zane spoke, enjoying the look of extreme exuberance that lit up the earth master's face as he pulled away from his cousin.
Kai, however, had different views about the newcomer. He smirked as he straightened his hair and took a daring step closer to Hilly.
"Well, well," he muttered in a low tone, trying to act suave and macho. "Who's this beauty?" He reached for her hand and placed a gentle kiss on top of it.
"Um . . ." Lloyd started but couldn't settle on what to say.
"I shouldn't be here," Archie murmured awkwardly under his breath as he sneaked out of the room.
"You must be Cole's friend," Hilly assumed, her smile never wavering as she continued to ignore the uncomfortableness exhibited by the others. "I can tell that you're trouble."
"Nah," Kai shrugged, leaning against the island. "I'm more of an irresistible kinda guy."
"Okay . . ." Hilly drew out slowly as Cole glared at the two from the side.
"Name's Kai," the red ninja went on, conjuring a small flame in one hand. "The Master of Fire and wooer of women." He winked at her causing Nya to drag a hand down her face.
"And he's interested in a certain redhead at the moment," she interrupted, trying to pull his brother away from the girl. "He really shouldn't be flirting with other girls right now."
"Uh, Kai," Cole whispered in his ear, yanking him farther. "This is Hildegard, the one who's getting engaged."
For the second time that day, the brunet lost his 'cool' demeanor. He righted himself and looked apologetic. "Oh, I'm sorry," he blushed.
"Besides," Cole added, "she's way too old for you. Like, five years to be exact."
Kai, nonetheless, couldn't pass up the opportunity to make an ever lasting impression on Hildegard. "Well, you don't look a day over seventeen."
"He's . . . not feeling well," Lloyd excused, giving Hildegard a sheepish look as he succeeded in pushing Kai at the back of the group, farthest away from her.
"Dude," Cole shook his head disappointedly as Kai offered the young woman another wink, "that's my cousin."
"So? Nya's my sister. Does Jay care?"
Jay let out a displeased noise at that. "At least I don't go around flirting with soon-to-be-engaged women half a decade older than me!"
"Halika na!" Hildegard motioned at everyone to follow, though her gaze was mainly directed at Cole.
Everyone stayed in their respective spots however, except for Dorothy who had moved to quickly finish up breakfast preparations. They gave each other unsure glances until Cole slightly pushed Zane towards the disappearing form of his cousin.
"That means we need to follow her," the Master of Earth explained as everyone finally nodded in comprehension.
"Your Tiya Lavinia has baked blueberry muffins in honour of your arrival, Colvin," Dorothy announced, hanging her apron on a hook behind the kitchen door. "She knows how much you love them."
"Then what are we waiting for?" Cole cheered, wrapping an arm around Jay's neck and dragging him out after Hildegard, the blue ninja squeaking indignantly as he went along.
Everyone filed out of the room with the exception of Kai who had stopped to check his hair in his reflection on the oven's glass door. He whipped around at the sound of a throat being cleared and found Cole's grandmother looking at him from the other side of the island.
"Yes, Mrs– uh . . . Lola?" Kai muttered, his hand dropping down from petting his spikes.
"Let's hope Ezra does not find out about the 'move' you attempted to make on Hildegard, parkupino."
Kai glanced awkwardly around the kitchen once before asking, "Um . . . who's Ezra?"
"Hildegard's financé-to-be."
Kai could feel the heat rising up to his cheeks and he coughed coyly into his fist, inching closer to the door. "Uh, yeah, let's hope not."
With a final, nervous grin, Kai shuffled out of the room, leaving a mischievously smiling grandmother in his wake.
