Origin
Rex didn't have the best childhood. He grew up in a bad neighborhood with just his dad, who was not a good father. He learned to support himself through less favorable means. He sold drugs for long time, and was a pretty popular dealer in the community. But as he moved up in the ranks, things grew more dangerous. He made a lot of enemies, and had to know how to defend himself.
Eventually, he moved away from drugs and started to focus on the more violent side of his community. Many people in the area needed to get rid of other people, but didn't want to get their hands dirty. Rex saw this as an opportunity to make money. He started off helping dealers punish people for various reasons, but never killing these victims. This didn't last forever, though.
People began to offer him money to kill, and he didn't decline their offers. He killed a few people along with the rest of his work. After some time of doing this, he joined a criminal organization of contract killers, or hitmen, and moved to Peek City to work with them. Here, his prestige skyrocketed, and he became what could be considered a professional killer. He made a lot of money with this new job
After a while working with the organization, he was sent after another target. It seemed like a routine kill. He hunted down the individual, and approached them with a gun. Rex shot the man in the back of the head, before he even saw what was happening to him. But to his surprise, the man didn't fall to the ground. He turned around, an disgruntled look on his face.
He didn't speak, just looked at Rex. His gun melted in his hand with no resistance. Rex tried to run, but the mysterious man froze his body in place without even lifting a hand. He strolled over, and stood facing him.
"You've made a lot of bad decisions, huh?" He asked in a gravelly voice.
"Who are you?" Rex replied, clearly terrified.
The man circled around him, looking him over, mumbling to himself.
"Why have you chosen such a path?" He questioned, but Rex didn't reply.
"I see more than this in you, Ranson." He mused, shaking his head.
"How do you know my name?" Rex panted.
"That is unimportant. Tell me, Rex. If I granted you the option to change, would you take it?" The strange man offered.
"What?" Rex questioned, flabbergasted.
"You heard me. Now, answer. If you did not have to kill, would you still do it?" He asked again.
"I don't have to kill... it's just how I make money. What's your problem with that?"
"Well, Ranson. You've chosen a difficult path for yourself." The man replied, shaking his head.
Rex was suddenly thrown face-down by an unseen force. When he was lifted once again, he found that he was in an alley, the same mysterious man before him. The night sky above was cloudy, no stars visible. But something was different. An incredibly strong smell was entering his nose. Several different smells. Many were familiar, but so strong and intense he could almost see what he was smelling, even with his eyes closed. He could tell what each item in the nearby dumpster was. It was overpowering, yet empowering.
Whatever had happened, his sense of smell was heightened. Rex could only imagine that it was exactly how a bloodhound felt. He sniffed audibly, testing his newfound power. He made a mental note of how easily he could track down his victims if he could manage to harness his nose's strength. He turned to look at the man, tilting his head in confusion. Why?
The man looked at him once more, before completely disappearing. Rex didn't even see the moment where he ceased to be, it was so sudden. Where he stood, a small piece of paper was left behind. It read as follows.
"I apologize for doing this, but merely setting you free would change you in no way. As you read this, members of the Legion are on their way. I have called them to your location, and they know about everything you have done. As long as you prove yourself useful to them with your new power, they will not send you to prison. Do yourself a favor and listen to them.
-A Friend."
As if on queue, Rex turned around to the sound of thundering footsteps. Several people ran into the alley, blocking the entry. In front, a man with robot parts was holding up his metal left arm, pointing his wrist at Rex. It appeared to have a gun attached. This was Julian Smoke, or Grey Guardian, leader of the Legion. A few other heroes stood beside him, including Rhea Anderson, a girl with feathered, grey wings who went by the hero name of Peregrine.
"Let's get to he point, Ranson. We don't know who you are, but whoever managed to contact us made it clear that you've done a lot of terrible things. You'll come with us, and then we'll figure out what to do from headquarters." The cyborg told him sharply.
Rex was the exact type of person Grey Guardian hated the most, so naturally he was being rather standoffish. Rex was heavily restrained, and brought back to Legion headquarters. There was a huge debate between the members present on what to do with him. Julian (Grey Guardian) wanted to send him to the police and let them deal with him. But a few of the people there, including Rhea (Peregrine) thought that he could be reformed and made useful. His incredible sense of smell could help them locate villains.
Julian begrudgingly allowed Rex to stay. He made an official agreement with police about keeping him there, since he had committed a lot of crimes. Since the police and the Legion were on very good terms and worked together often, they allowed him to keep Rex in his custody. As long as he didn't commit any more crimes and was watched often, he could stay out of court and eventually prison.
Rex was reluctant to join, but he really didn't have much of a choice. He didn't like most of the people there that he met, and was pretty rude. This caused a lot of arguments. He usually hung out around Rhea and her friends, who mostly tolerated him. He would go a bit too far sometimes, though, and got yelled at from time to time.
Even if Rex had some serious attitude issues, he was pretty helpful to the Legion using his powerful sense of smell to track down enemies before they could strike. As long as he had something of theirs that carried their scent, he could probably find them. He wasn't perfect, but it was very convenient. He wasn't much of a front line fighter, but he was good with a gun and helped fight if he could. Rex became known as The Hound. He wasn't the most popular member of the Legion, but he was useful.
