Origin

Similar to Peregrine, Supernova's story doesn't begin with her. It begins with an alien, a Virtagen named Ceris. He was a fugitive, fleeing from planet to planet from his kind. Eventually, he landed on Earth to rest for a while. He met a human woman there, who fell in love with him. They conceived a child together.

Early into the pregnancy, Ceris discovered that the Virtagens were on his tail again. Without looking back, he was on the road again, leaving the woman pregnant and alone. She gave birth nine months later to Fey Taryn. As far as her mother could tell, she was completely healthy, but hardly looked human at all. She was lilac, with pointed ears and sharp horns. On top of that. she has a twisting, spiked tail at the end of her spine.

With nothing else to do, she hid the child from everyone else. She only revealed Fey to very close family and friends. Unfortunately, this caused her to grow very lonely without other children to play with. After seven years, her mother was at the end of her rope. With no other options, she contacted the Legion, knowing that they had a member who was an alien. Shortly after, the superhero Insectoid showed up at their door. He was very clearly not human. He had four arms, with three odd fingers on each hand. Two flimsy antennae wiggled out from his forehead, and his eyes were large and black. Translucent wings hung from his shoulders, and short mandibles protruded from the sides of his jaw. But Insectoid was charming for a humanoid bug.

He told Fey's mother that he would be willing to help them out. He'd help teach Fey to live as an alien as a human world, and how to control the powers that might come with being an extraterrestrial. The two of them would have to move to Peek City, however, to be close enough for Insectoid to be able to teach Fey. Without any other options, she sold the house and moved to an apartment in the city. It took a few months to get the move in order, but Insectoid was able to start training the second they got into the city. He introduced them to a small school in the area, specifically geared for children with powers. It was one of the only schools like that in the country, but children with powers are very uncommon. There, Fey didn't need to worry about being unusual compared to the other kids. They were all unusual.

Just to be clear, the school was not there to teach the students how to use their powers. It was a regular school that taught the children regular subjects. However, unlike common schools, they were able to handle situations involving superpowers. Since these children usually couldn't attend regular schools, it was good for them to have a place to go and learn.

One thing Fey always struggled with was how she felt about her father's absence. Her mother always said that he was a good man, but clearly had plenty of pent up anger towards him for leaving. Fey was overall very conflicted over this. Over time, this confliction turned to bitterness towards Ceris. He abandoned her mother, and so he abandoned her. Fey vowed that if he ever dared step foot on Earth again, she would give him hell.

Time passed, and Fey grew older. At age twelve, the fangs in her mouth began to produce venom. After biting her tongue accidentally, the function of the venom was discovered. It was mildly paralytic, freezing one arm and one leg for a short period of time. (Just to be clear, the distribution of the venom is random, not always paralyzing one arm and leg.)

Actual powers began to manifest after this. Neither her mother or Insectoid knew what species Fey was, but he assumed that this power was natural for members of whatever species she was. She was able to summon a ball of glowing energy, which could be thrown and used as a weapon.

Fey was seventeen when Insectoid offered her the chance to meet her own species. For context, he had always been in contact with his home planet, and when he showed them an image of Fey, they were able to identify her as a Virtagen. They were a politically and economically prestigious planet, respected by many civilizations in the galaxy. Insectoid's people helped him gain contact with the Virtagens, and he alerted them of Fey's existence. Although they quickly put together that her father was Ceris, a wanted fugitive with plenty of crimes against the Virtagens, they did not blame her for her father's actions. They offered to bring Fey to their planet to visit, and go through an important coming-of-age ceremony all Virtagens experience.

Fey agreed, and soon a Virtagen ship landed to pick her up. She was anxious, but excited. The Virtagens that came out to greet her looked very similar to her, however, not entirely. After all, she was only half Virtagen. They were much taller, with a few more horns on their heads and longer, pointier ears. Their fangs were larger, and protruded from their mouths, and their skin was much more vibrantly purple. And weirdly enough, they had six fingers instead of five.

They brought Fey to their planet, which was a beautiful place. The sky was constantly night, but it was so bright that it illuminated the world below. Bright colors, greens, pinks, reds, and blues twisted through the darkness, seeming to be made of stars. A few bright moons circled solemnly. The planet itself was just as gorgeous. Most of it consisted of stone, beautifully chiseled into intricate shapes. What wasn't chiseled was simply bare cliff, adding a more natural atmosphere. Large crystals were incorporated into the architecture, glittering proudly.

The Virtagens showed her around the planet, introducing her to the culture and society. Wherever she went, Virtagens were amazed to see her. Hybrids were incredibly uncommon, as the planet was pretty much exclusive to Virtagens. Almost all of them were very friendly, if not neutral towards her.

After a few days, the Virtagens educated Fey about the coming-of-age ceremony that all Virtagens went through. She was several years older than usual, but they still offered her the chance to experience the ceremony. Fey willingly accepted.

The ceremony had more to it than just celebrating someone coming of age. It was also there to find out a Virtagen's 'true name.' Up until a certain age, the children would simply go by nicknames. After receiving their name, that's what they'd be called. The process of getting a name is a bit unusual, though.

The unnamed Virtagen would kneel before an altar, while a Virtagen who could be compared to a priest would speak sacred words above them. They would toss a handful of odd, purple dust over them, and then the unnamed one would experience hallucinations, and would see the supposed spirits of ancient Virtagens. They would then choose a name that suited them, and the newly named Virtagen would come back into reality, and shout their name out.

At the time of her ceremony, Fey was adorned in the regular ceremonial garb that Virtagens often wore. Since a surprising amount of people wanted to attend, the ceremony was moved to a larger location. It was a large, cavelike building, set up quite similarly to a church. However, the long stone benches faced towards the aisle. At the end of the aisle, there was an altar, with a few stairs leading up to it. Atop the altar was a white, glowing crystal.

Fey moved quickly down the aisle, sensing the eyes of hundreds of silent Virtagens on her. She reached the altar, where a tall male Virtagen stood opposite of her. As instructed, she kneeled down, placing her forehead against the crystal. The tall male spoke the words softly, and then scattered the violet dust over her.

Suddenly, everything seemed to invert, and Fey was transported to a dark purple cloudscape that seemed to be dotted with stars. Several shadows stood before her, and from what she could see, they were Virtagens. It wasn't too clear, though, as everything was so blurry it was hard to tell what was what. The shadows whispered to each other, and approached an anxious Fey.

They circled around her, still whispering, blotting out the dark amethyst cloudscape. After about a minute, all but one shadow dissipated. It stood before her, and placed what Fey assumed were hands on her shoulders. Finally, it spoke loud enough for her to hear.

"You are Quasra." It whispered.

After speaking, the shadow leaned its forehead against Fey's, and the cloudscape inverted back into the stone temple. She was dizzy for a moment, before proudly rising and proclaiming to the Virtagens,

"Quasra!"

Fey had no clue what the name meant, but she liked it. For the remainder of her visit, that's what the Virtagens would call her. She couldn't figure out how the ceremony worked, or how they got her to see the shadows. Fey wanted to be a skeptic, but there was no way for her to explain it. Maybe inhaling the purple dust would cause hallucinations.

She spent a few more days with the Virtagens. On her last day, they offered to let her stay on their planet with them for the rest of her life. Surprisingly, Fey denied their offer. She had grown far too attached to her life on Earth. The Virtagens understood, and took her home. She said her goodbyes, and returned home.

Her mother was relieved to have her back. When she saw Insectoid the next day, he was very interested in hearing about the planet, and pressed her for details about the experience. Fey didn't mind. She'd really been enlightened by the trip, and the newfound knowledge about her heritage inspired her to work harder honing her skills and controlling her power.

A year passed, and Fey improved. She became more skilled at long-range combat, staying further away from her opponent and firing spheres of energy at them from a distance. In circumstances where this wasn't possible, she would fight close-range, but was a lot less skilled and had a much higher chance at being injured.

At age 18, she was accepted into the Legion. Her mother, friends, and especially Insectoid were all very proud of her. She made a lot of new friends there, but the closest was Theodore James, a 17 year old hero with the ability to create pheromones that manipulated the emotions of who they hit. They worked together often.
