The Headless Rooster
Oscar was a proud bird, tall and handsome and all the hens flocked to him, while the other roosters both feared and respected him. He was the cock of the walk as they say.
That is until one day when Farmer McGillicutty was walking through the run. The farmer was there with fresh feed and water for his chickens and as he bent down to pour the feed into the pan.
Oscar saw his opportunity and spurred the farmer with his heels knocking him to the ground. Relentlessly he squawked while pecking and clawing at the fallen farmer.
Farmer McGillicutty flailed his arms and kicked his feet trying to get the rooster off of him. Eventually he was able to get back to his feet kicking at Oscar.
"Damn you bird, I'll make soup of you yet!" cursed the farmer as he dusted himself off and stalked away.
He returned moments later hatchet in hand intending to follow through on his threat. He caught Oscar after a bit more fighting and grabbing the rooster by his feet hung him upside down as he carried him off to his chopping block. He stretched the bird out holding him down with his left hand as he raised the razor sharp hatchet above his head.
In a moment it was over as the blade came down severing Oscar's head from his body. The farmer tossed the body into the ground where it involuntarily flipped across the ground spurting blood.
Farmer McGillicutty, waited for the last signs of life to expire from the body, but to his shock and amazement it never did. The headless body flopped and spun all the way out of the yard. "Oh well," said the farmer "Good riddance" and he made his way back to the house.
That night as the farmer lay asleep in his bed enjoying the best dream, he was suddenly awakened by the crow of a rooster. "Why on earth is a rooster crowing at this hour?" He asked himself.
He put on a light jacket over his pajamas and went out to see what the commotion was.
The chickens we silent and sleeping upon their roosts. "That's funny I swear I heard something" remarked the farmer. He thought he heard a rustling behind him and quickly turned on his heels to find nothing there. Farmer McGillicutty went back into his house and went to sleep.
For a few weeks all was as it should be, but one day the farmer awoke to find a message clawed into the dirt in front of the chicken coop it simply read:
Revenge
Needless to say this startled the Farmer, he didn't know what to make of the mysterious message.
Another few weeks went by without incident, until one day as he was tending the coop the farmer found that his scarecrow was sprawled in front of the run. It's head was missing and in the place it should have been the hatchet blade was buried into the ground. This disturbed the farmer to no end.
More time passed, and Farmer McGillicutty's sanity was tested once again. This time when he approached the coop he stopped in his tracks. He could not believe his eyes. There in front of him stood Oscar, or at least his body. "What do you want from me?" Farmer McGillicutty asked a tremble in his voice.
A gurgle of blood spouted from the neck of the rooster as it stepped closer.
"Please, don't hurt me" cried the farmer as he turned to run back to the house.
He didn't make it however, as he tripped over the hatchet and fell atop the blade. Oscar's snicker was the last thing the poor farmer heard.
To this day the headless rooster still haunts the farm.
