CHAPTER III: ENTERING THE MONSTER'S LAIR
Inspecting the necklace in his grasp, the Sheriff exclaimed, 'This is Max's necklace. We've lost track of the kid. But where did the werewolf vanish to? It defies all logic. I've never encountered such a phenomenon in all my years.' The men remained silent, pondering his words.
"Get a man on each corner of this forest, and have someone check on the others." commanded Johnson. The Sheriff and his men continued their search, but they found no trace of the werewolf or Max. Hours passed with no success in their search. Exhausted and hungry, the men decided to call it a night and rest.
Johnson looked at the other men and stated, 'We won't find anything else tonight. We'll resume our search in the morning. Let's head back. I'll send a man to Main Street and have the others report back to us. We'll regroup at the Sheriff's Office.' Glancing at the woods, he added, 'I'm uneasy about the werewolf lurking out there. Locating him is imperative.' The men concurred. They turned around and made their way back to town.
Everyone was lost in thought, contemplating what they had witnessed. Their focus shifted to Max's necklace, disbelief evident in their expressions. Inside his home, Doc McCoy stood in silence, his gaze fixed on the group. Overwhelmed with confusion, he struggled to process the information being shared. As the men headed towards the front door, Doc McCoy glanced back and caught sight of Sheriff Johnson. Releasing a sigh, he uttered, 'I'm relieved you've finally come to update me on Max.' With a heavy heart, he added, 'I hope you can bring him back home.'
"We'll find him. I'll inform you if I hear anything," said the Sheriff reassuringly. The men nodded before departing. The doctor closed the door, shaking his head in disbelief. Placing the necklace on the table, he walked to the window, peering out into the night. Rubbing his eyes, he murmured to himself, "I don't know what's going on, but I have a terrible feeling." Picking up the necklace from the table, he declared softly, "I'll keep this with me until you return to me, Max.
The train's headlights sliced through the darkness as it thundered into Jaxon at 12:30 am. The train screeched to a halt, and the locomotive's deafening whistle reverberated through the station. 'All aboard,' the conductor announced, prompting the departure of the mighty locomotive.
Through the darkness, a swift shadow dashed by unnoticed by the train passengers. The locomotive unleashed a deafening whistle, signaling the train's commencement. With each subsequent shrill blow, the train accelerated, gaining momentum. Suddenly, a werewolf sprinted at full speed, carrying Max on his shoulder. He leaped in front of the thundering train, forcing it to screech to a halt. The werewolf landed gracefully, swiftly disappearing into the depths of the woods. The locomotive's whistle pierced the air once more as the train resumed its journey ahead.
Max and the werewolf sprinted through the dense woods, delving deeper into the shadows. They tumbled down a steep hill, landing amidst the enveloping darkness. The night was devoid of stars, shrouded by thick clouds that obscured any trace of celestial light. An eerie silence reigned, broken only by the distant wail of the train whistle. As the werewolf lay on the ground, a transformation back into human form began.
Max lay on the ground, his ankle twisted from the fall. Gazing up at the man, he exclaimed, 'I thought you were going to kill me!' 'You're still very much alive,' the man reassured him as he approached and extended a helping hand. 'I'm so sorry, Max. I should have been more careful. I didn't see that hole.' 'I overheard the doctor talking to Sheriff Johnson,' the man added solemnly. 'I didn't mean to hurt you. It's just that I'm hungry.'
Quietly, the man led Max into the old yellow schoolhouse, his grip firm yet gentle. Despite Max's fear, he had no choice but to follow. As they traversed the flickering hallway, the man abruptly halted, shoving Max into a classroom and swiftly locking the door behind them.
He turned around and looked at Max. Max was sitting on the floor with his back against the wall. The former werewolf came over to Max and sat down next to him. He looked at Max and said, "I'm sorry, Max. I'm so hungry. I don't know what to do. I can't be a werewolf and be able to take care of you at the same time." Max looked at him and asked, "Why did you attack the town of Jaxon, anyway?" The man looked down at the floor and said, "I'm so hungry, Max. I didn't mean to hurt anybody. I wanted to eat."
Max nervously dared to ask, 'Are you going to eat... me?'
The loud ring of the school bell filled the old schoolhouse, its sound echoing through the halls, creating the illusion that it was still ringing. The werewolf glanced at the bell and remarked, 'That's the school bell, Max. I must return to Jaxon. Unfinished business...'
Max's face twisted in horror.
Meanwhile, back in Jaxon, Sheriff Johnson decided to go to the gunsmith in town. His name was Randy. He was a short man, but stocky. He had a bushy beard and a mustache. He was wearing a blue shirt and a pair of blue jeans. He had a gun belt on, and he had a revolver in it. He was a good shot, and he knew how to use his gun. Sheriff Johnson walked into the gunsmith's shop. He saw Randy sitting behind the counter. Randy was working on a gun. The sheriff walked up to the counter and asked Randy, "Do you have any werewolf repellant? I need some werewolf repellant.'
Randy looked up at the sheriff and said, "Follow me, Sheriff.' The sheriff followed Randy out of the shop and down the street to a house. Randy knocked on the door and a man answered. The man was wearing a white shirt and a pair of blue jeans. He was bald and had a mustache. The man looked at the sheriff and said, 'What do you want?' The sheriff said, 'I need some werewolf repellant. Do you have any?' The man said, "down the hall, second door to your right." The sheriff followed the man down the hall and he opened the door.
The sheriff walked in, and he saw a covered object on the table. The sheriff walked up to the table and he pulled the white cover off. It was a huge Gatling Gun. The sheriff looked at the gun, and he said, 'This is it. This is the werewolf repellant I need. How much does it cost?' The man said, 'Well, it's a little more than a dollar a shot. But, you can have it for free. "I'll take it." The sheriff cocks the gun, and he smiles. He says, "tell me about the gun." The man said, 'Well, it's a Gatling Gun. It fires a thousand bullets a minute. It's a very powerful gun. It's a lot more powerful than the shotgun. It's a lot more powerful than the rifle.
Max was alone in the schoolhouse and he was afraid. He wanted to go home but he knew he couldn't go back out into the hallway. He was scared of the werewolf, so he stayed in the room. He needed a way out. Then, all of a sudden, another kid walked into the room. He was a young man. He had black hair, brown eyes. He had on blue jeans and wore a black shirt. He had a backpack on his back. He had a big smile on his face, and he was very happy to see Max.
Jake introduced himself, 'Hi, I'm Jake. What's your name?'
Max replied, 'I'm Max.'
Jake reassured him, 'Hi, Max, I'm here to help.'
Max expressed his fear of the werewolf, to which Jake comforted him,
'Don't worry, I'll help you.' Offering assistance, Jake suggested, 'Let's go to my house; my parents will assist you.'
Grateful, Max responded, 'Thank you so much!'
Jake simply replied, 'You're welcome.'
They quietly left the classroom, cautiously navigating the hallway until they encountered the monster at the corner.
Urging Max to run, Jake exclaimed, 'Run!'
Max locked eyes with the werewolf, causing him to freeze in fear. Beads of sweat trickled down his face, mirroring the tension of a basketball player in the final moments of a game. The school's lighting flickered erratically, casting an eerie glow. With a sudden jolt, Max broke free from his trance and sprinted alongside Jake. The werewolf gave chase through the dimly lit hallway. As the lights flickered once more, illuminating their frantic escape, the creature lurked in pursuit. A crack of lightning outside added to the intense atmosphere.
Max and Jake hurriedly exit the building through a set of grand double doors, only to be startled by a sudden ambush. Seemingly out of thin air, a pack of wolves encircles the two kids, their haunting howls piercing the rainy night. Despite their fear, Max and Jake bravely position themselves back to back. As the beast crashes through another set of double doors, the kids find themselves face to face with the menacing werewolf. Its bloodcurdling howls echo through the stormy night, its hungry gaze and drooling fangs a terrifying sight.
