Chapter Twenty-Three

Seto got her in the house, and he realised the fire had gone out. Relighting it, he rushed about the house, pulling blankets off the beds and bringing them downstairs. He draped them on the floor, ushering her into the bundle. He wrapped the last one around her, and went to turn the percolator on. He felt a tug at his jeans, and he looked down. Sophia's tanned yet mottled arm was outstretched, gripping it.
"Don't leave me alone, I'm scared." She begged, her big brown eyes beginning to fill with tears once again.
"I'm only going to the kitchen." he frowned slightly.
"Please? Sit with me? Hold me?" She pleaded, and Seto couldn't say no. He sat next to her, wrapping his arms around her small frame.
"What are we going to do?" She asked quietly, as they both stared into the flames. In all truthfulness, Seto didn't know what he should do to help this situation. No amount of money would fix this. If push came to shove, he'd need to call in a favour he was owed by the Japanese crime lords.
"What did Mokuba call you for earlier?" She asked suddenly. And then, it came back.
"Mokuba told me..."
"Yes?" She asked, her face full of concern. Seto sighed, not knowing how this would go down.
"Somebody leaked pictures and birth certificates."
"Who's pictures and birth certificates?" Sophia's blood ran cold, knowing what was coming next. Seto cast his gaze towards her.
"Yours. A high school yearbook photo, a photo of you now, and a picture of you and your father when you were young, and your birth certificate." He looked at her, expecting her to be angry. Sophia smiled at him, then laughed. A chuckle at first, and then she began to laugh loudly. She put an arm around Seto, kissing his cheek.
"I'm so sorry, Seto." She smiled sadly now, caressing the back of her hand against his cheek. Frowning, Seto turned to face her properly. He cupped her face in his hands.
"Sorry? What are you sorry for?"
"You married me to help hide me, hide who I am. You married me to try and keep me safe. And it didn't work, now everyone knows." She looked... downtrodden. Disappointed. "You can divorce me and come clean about it all, it'll be fine. No one will think differently of you for doing it." She tried to smile, but could barely lift one side of her mouth upwards. Seto saw tears well in her beautiful brown eyes. She still thinks I married her for that reason...
"Sophia-"
"It's fine Seto, don't worry," she said quietly, laying her head on his chest. She sounded... emotionless. She definitely did not want this. She had been pushed into this whole facade. Why had he let it go so far? He knew it was his own fault, pushing her to live in the same house as him, work with people he had connections to by taking dancing back up, even though she had protested. She had practically begged him, pleaded with him not to make her, but he had forced her hand. This is why you've been alone so long, you're too pushy and selfish. He knew he shouldn't, but he pulled her closer, kissing the top of her head and listening to her soft breathing as she fell asleep.

"I'm coming, Sophia. And this time, you won't get away." Carlos's voice echoed through the darkness, rattling through her brain.
"NO!" She screamed as she sat upright. Seto jolted awake from beside her. The fire was still burning low in the fireplace, and Sophia looked around. It was just a dream. A growl from her stomach distracted her from her nightmare. They hadn't eaten yet.
"Sophia, are you okay?" He whispered to her softly. She grasped at his shirt, taking comfort in his sleep thickened voice.
"Yeah... just a nightmare." she sniffled into his shoulder.
"Shhh... it's okay. Are you hungry?" he asked softly, brushing the hair out of her face.
"I am a little," she responded, the growling in her gut becoming apparent.
"Come with me, I'll make us something," he said quietly.

Seto watched her as she sat at the table, staring into a cup of green tea. She looked so tired, so drawn in. He couldn't stand to see her like this, she should be happy. Smiling. Instead,r she looked scared and constantly verge of tears. Seto made something quick, mac and cheese with bacon bits, and placed a bowl in front of her.
"Thank you," she said quietly, not looking up from her tea. Placing it down, she picked up the spoon and began to eat. She chewed without tasting, she kept her eyes down. Seto began to make conversation with her, trying to coax her out of her bubble of sadness.
"We go home tomorrow, Sophia." he reached across the table and took hold of her free hand.
"I know. I can't wait." she murmured, her voice stoic and her eyes still not lifting to meet his. His face fell slightly. He knew this trip had really affected her. Not even a week until she left with the Mariinsky Ballet. His chest tightened at the thought of her leaving.
"Neither can I, really. I need to make sure Mokuba hasn't trashed the mansion." he smiled slightly, and Sophia looked up at him, finally. She smiled back, a small but definitely there smile. "There's that smile I love." he reached across the table and chucked her under the chin. Her smile grew wider as she looked into his face.
"Are we leaving in the morning?" she asked.
"Yeah, we'll be gone by eight in the morning. Don't worry."
"Okay. I'm done now. Can we go to bed?" she said simply, draining her cup of tea.
"Sure, let's go." he stood up, taking her bowl and putting it in the sink.

As they settled into bed, Sophia looked out of the window, peeking behind the curtain. Seeing the pitch black of the forest, and the rippling of the unfrozen lake she had fallen in earlier that morning, a shiver racked her body. She wasn't paying attention when she felt hands around her waist, making her jump.
"Jesus Christ!" she exclaimed.
"It's just me, Sophia. Come to bed, you'll catch a chill by the window." Seto led her away, settling her into the large bed. Hesitating before getting in with her, he held up a finger and said;
"Stay put, I'll be right back." and, much like her first night at the mansion, he began checking the room. Underneath the bed, in the closet, double checking the window was locked properly. He checked all through the house, and Sophia wrapped her arms around her knees, pulling them to her chest as she heard him pulling on windows, checking the doors, opening and closing closets and cupboards. Finally, she heard the sound of Seto's feet as he came up the stairs.
"Everything is locked up tight, nothing is getting in this house without us knowing about it."
"Thank you, Seto. I appreciate it." she wrapped her arms around him as he slid into bed. He put his arm around her, kissing her on the mouth.
"Now, get some sleep. You've had a terrible day."
"Thank you," she whispered, closing her eyes and falling into a dreamless sleep.

Back in Domino City,  Carlos grimaced as he placed the shades on his face, hoping no one would recognise him. All day, all he had seen on the tv and in the papers and magazines was Sophia's face, and her real name plastered on the headlines. He had been hasty, far too hasty with her at the lake. Hell, if it wasn't for Kaiba, she would have drowned because of his hot-headedness. His boss had already been in contact, and he had been chastised like a child. Luckily, his boss needed him as much as Carlos needed him. He knew it was his boss who had given the information to the new stations, as if his job wasn't hard enough already. Pushing away from the stool of the dive bar he now frequented, he began to walk towards his hotel that was situated down the road. Pulling his jacket closer to himself, he smiled, knowing he'd have Sophia back in Italy with him soon enough, and his dreary hotel room would not be a reality for long.
