Chapter Twenty-Seven
Sorry guys, didn't mean to publish this so short the first time. I've got this app downloaded on my laptop and I'm still getting used to it! Anyway, enjoy the full chapter.
As Sophia was driven home, she took in her surroundings. She started to think; the next two days were her last in Domino for a while. She knew she had to speak to Seto before she left.
"Simpson, can we go to Kaiba Corp?" she asked quietly.
"Of course, Miss." he nodded towards her, smiling slightly to himself. He had worked for Seto Kaiba for six years, straight after he had been medically discharged from the marines, and had never seen his employers face brighten like it did when he saw her. It was a relief to see his boss so happy.
Arriving at the tall building, Sophia hopped out of the car, thanking Simpson for waiting with her. Walking through the reception area, she smiled as she waved at the receptionist. Clearing the reception area quickly, she got on the glass elevator and pressed the button for the top floor. She looked down at her ring, watching how it glinted in the light. It had come to mean much more to her than a piece of jewellery. She felt a tug deep in her chest while thinking of the man who gave it to her.
"Seto" she sighed softly to herself. She was in love with him, that much was obvious to her now. She had to tell him how she felt, before she left for months at end. She was startled from her train of thought as the door to the elevator dinged and opened. Walking through the now familiar corridor, she smiled at Marcia. "Hey Marcy, is Seto here?"
"Yes, Mr Kaiba is in his office. He is on the phone but will be off very soon, so if you'd like to go ahead-" she motioned towards the door playfully. "You know the way, I presume." she snickered.
"Thanks Marcy. See you soon!" she smiled again. She enjoyed Marcy's company, she was pleasant and conversation flowed easily.
As she opened the door, she was greeted by Seto, with his fingers pinching the bridge of his nose, hanging up the phone he was on. He removed a pair of black rectangle glasses, rubbing his face. He had not heard her come in yet.
"You wear glasses?" Sophia said, making him jump.
"Jesus Christ Sophia, you startled me." he held his hand to his chest. Sophia saw the bags under his eyes. His skin was unusually pale, and he looked generally unwell.
"Seto... are you okay? You don't look well."
"Yes I'm fine, I'm just... tired." he said, keeping his eyes averted from hers. "Anyway, what brings you here? I thought you were at rehearsals all day?" he looked up at her, it seemed as though the effort to do so took it out of him.
"Not all day, I just thought I'd drop in to see you." she watched as he half heartedly smiled, and then he burst out into a coughing fit. "You need to go home and get some rest, Mr Kaiba. You aren't well." she demanded, walking closer to her husband. Standing by his chair, she placed her arm around his still sitting body, over his shoulder. He leaned his head into her stomach slightly, closing his eyes. She slowly ruffled his brown hair, feeling the softness against her skin. Running one hand down his face, she felt the shadow of a beard coming through his skin. She stayed still, enjoying the affection.
"Come on, lets go home." she muttered, giving his shoulder a squeeze.
"Okay, let me get my things." he nodded, his eyes drooping slightly.
In the car on the way home, Seto's head slumped onto her shoulder. Looking at him, she saw he was dozing. Caressing his head, she planted a kiss on the crown of his head. Who'd have thought it? Seto Kaiba got ill. She was not surprised. Most of the time he survived off of coffee and brandy when he wasn't eating with her or Mokuba. No wonder he had taken ill.
"Simpson?"
"Yes Miss?"
"I'll need help getting Seto in the house. He's burning up."
"Should I call the family doctor?"
"Yes, that would be a good idea."
As Simpson and Sophia put Seto into bed, she heard him sigh deeply as he rolled onto his back, surrounded by the soft covers. She removed his suit jacket, unbuttoning the shirt and leaving him to it. She felt the skin of his abdomen start to burn up. Biting her lip, she sat on the edge of the bed, worried about him. A soft knock sounded from the door, and a voice came.
"Hello, Doctor Jakobi here to see Mr Kaiba."
"Hello, I'm Seto's wife." Sophia stuck out her hand, and the doctor shook it.
"Mr Kaiba, how are you feeling?" he asked him, and Seto grunted quietly.
"Doctor Jakobi?" he asked, looking up with bleary eyes.
"Hello Seto, are you alright?"
"I've got a cough, my body aches, I can't stay awake. I'm so tired, doc." he said, his eyes drooping. The doctor said nothing, just sat him up carefully. Slowly, he began to work quietly, taking his temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate.
"He's exhausted." he said simply, removing his stethoscope.
"Are you- are you sure?" Sophia was surprised by this. She had called a doctor out for Seto because he suffered from exhaustion? She felt her face burn up.
"Yep. There's nothing I can prescribe other than plenty of rest, fluids and some chicken soup." he nodded, gathering his things and putting them in his bag, getting ready to leave. "Have a good day. And Mr Kaiba-" he turned to him again. "Make sure you rest. You'll work yourself into an early grave if you don't." he waggled his finger at her.
"Mmm." he mumbled, removing his shirt properly and laying back down. The doctor departed, his visit short and sweet. Closing the door behind him, Sophia turned her attention back to Seto. He was trying to muster up the strength to unbutton his pants, but couldn't find it.
"Here, let me help." she said quietly. She came towards him, removing his hand from his belt buckle and replacing them with her own. She unbuckled his belt, unzipping the fly on his pants and pulling them down for him. The skin her fingers brushed against was warm to the touch, too warm. She threw the blanket over him, tucking him at the sides.
"Too hot," he muttered quietly.
"You need to sweat it out, Seto." she looked at him sympathetically. He groaned again, but accepted his fate.
"Lay with me for a while." he asked, like a child would ask. Sophia smiled again, climbing into bed beside him. He rolled onto his side, and she flung an arm over her him, and held him close. They lay in silence for a while, happy. She listened to his even breathing, and she thought back on what she had wanted to say.
"I love you." she said quietly, it slipping out of her mouth before she could think of anything else to say. Silence. "Seto?" she muttered, waiting for his response. A small snore sounded. He was asleep, he hadn't heard what she'd said. Giggling to herself, she untangled herself and got up. She'd tell him tomorrow. The day before she left.
