11-Working (It) Out-Lukas

Mr. Ware's P.E. class headed towards the track area, and I brought my stuff with me to go see what they were doing (Petra dragged me along, it was a painful process). The clothes for P.E. were gray shorts and a dark yellow shirt that said "Blockwest High" on it. Not that bad.

Once they stopped, I set my backpack down and watched as Mr. Ware gave the students a few instructions. They did some warm-up stretches and then he told them to run three laps on the track.

Petra gave me a wave before sprinting past the other students. I took a seat in the nearby shaded area and continued to watch. Just watching them made my throat dry. I hated running. I wasn't too bad, but I wasn't the best either.

I took my book out of my backpack again and began to read. I haven't even finished a chapter before-

"Hey Lukas!"

I forced myself not to jump again as Petra shouted my name. She was the first one done, and I couldn't help but be impressed. She looked like she didn't even break a sweat.

She ran towards me, ponytail swaying back and forth as she chugged down her water bottle that she probably grabbed on the third lap.

"That was fast Petra," I commented, stating the obvious. She just smirked in thanks.

"Damn right."

We looked at the other students, who were still scattered along the track at different speeds and places. Someone was coming in second, and for some reason, he looked deadly familiar. I squinted.

"Is that-?"

"Aiden." Petra finished for me, the word coming out of her mouth bitter. I dimly remembered him kicking my backpack and him glaring at me. I bit my lip. "He's an asshole."

Aiden stopped once he reached the finish and folded his arms across his chest, looking for someone. Meanwhile, the kids who were finishing running avoided him, and the ones who didn't earned a glare and sometimes his leg stuck out so they'd trip. I grimaced.

"Once we start to do the other exercises I'll tell you more about him. And some other stuff too." Petra exclaimed, flipping her water bottle in her hands. "You've got a lot to learn about this school."

*"*"*"*"*"*"*"*

After everyone was done running, Mr. Ware split us into pairs as we worked on sets of different exercises. Of course, no one really worked unless he was looking. Teachers were oblivious that way.

Petra had convinced him to let me partner with her and surprisingly, he agreed. Well, maybe that wasn't a surprise since she had an A-plus in his class.

Now we-er, Petra, was doing squats, push-ups, and curl-ups on the field.

"So," I start, sitting down on the field as she does her reps. "You were going to tell me-?"

"Oh yeah," she says, finishing her push-up. "We'll start with Aiden. He's the popular 'bad-boy' around here, I guess. The bully."

She then goes on her back and begins to do curl-ups.

"He's mean to just about everyone, so don't worry. You're not the only one. Anyway, he has these sidekicks, you know, like his brainless pawns. One of them is a girl, her name is Maya. She has a super huge crush on him but he doesn't like her back. So she just follows him around hoping he'll fall for her. The other one, well, he isn't that important. He got replaced with his 'old sidekick-'"

Petra stopped abruptly, and I raised an eyebrow.

"Old sidekick? He get kicked out or something?" I asked, wrapping my legs with my arms.

"Shit, I shouldn't have said anything." She murmured under her breath. She sighed and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Well, no use keeping it in now."

"What?"

"Your friend, Gil." I froze. "He used to be one of them."

*"*"*"*"*"*"*"*

Petra had immediately changed the subject after that. She refused to talk about it with me no matter how much I pestered her. She only answered with "he should be the one to tell you," and stuff like that.

I finally gave up and let her tell me about the rest of the school. The different groups and teachers, you get the deal. I won't bore you with the details, but I learned quite a bit.

After a while, P.E. was over and I packed up my stuff to head home. I could see the students heading out of the locker rooms and suddenly saw Petra. I walked over to her.

"Hey Petra, I just wanted to say bye. I'm gonna head home now." I replied, taking my phone out of my pocket. Just then she grabbed it out of my hand.

"What-?" I tried to reach for it back, but she was taller than me and held it above me, typing something in. I folded my arms across my chest, giving up. Yeah I was short, I'll admit that much.

A few moments passed and she handed me back my phone.

"Chill dude, I just gave you my phone number."

I stared at the phone for a bit as she said bye and headed out. Then I smiled.

Two friends, even more to go.
