1-New Kid-Lukas
One word: scared. Yeah, yeah I was scared, I'll admit it. The moment I stepped into that school I felt myself freeze, my body stiffening and thoughts bursting in my head every second. But after a remembering why I was here in the first place, I forced myself to relax and go step after step into the dreaded school.
The first day is always the hardest, they say. That's what I'm trying to believe.
It's my first day of school, and I'm not exactly a social butterfly. I'd much prefer to sit up huddled in a corner with a good book. But alas, sitting alone reading books isn't something you get paid for. I really hoped I fit in here, maybe even make some friends.
It was already a month into school, but my first day for me. I unzipped my blue backpack and pulled out my schedule, with had the handwriting of my counselor on it. I bit my lip and leaned against the wall, going over my classes.
(Imma just pick random classes lol)
First period, med bio with Mr. Dread.
Second period, geography with Mr. Smith
Third period, math with Mr. Roole
Fourth period, english AP with Ms. Mesa
Fifth period, robotics with Mr. End
Sixth period, P.E. with Mr. Ware
Hmm, first period with Mr. Dread. Exactly what I was feeling.
The bell rang and I practically jumped, dropping my schedule to the floor. I shook my head at my clumsiness and bent down to pick up my schedule, turning it around to see the map and adjusting my thin-rimmed glasses.
I stood up and reached for my backpack, only to grab a handful of air. Surprised, I quickly turned around to see a guy and girl laughing as they kicked my bag across the floor.
"Good luck, new kid." He smirked, lime eyes sparkling. "You're gonna need it."
They left before I could protest, and I immediately ran to grab my backpack.
Great way to start the day, I thought miserably, before putting it on my back and running to class, hoping that they teacher was nicer than his name.
*"*"*"*"*"*"*"*"*"*"*
The bell rang right as I stepped into class, sweat beading down my forehead and breaths heavy. I sighed with relief and moved a falling strand of hair out of my face.
"What are you doing in my class, blonde guy?" A voice snapped, and I turned to see a man, who was older and had black hair along with a beard. He wore a swamp-green robe. His gaze was threatening, and I gulped.
"I-I'm new." I stammered, hands shaking as I handed him the schedule. He grabbed it out of my hand so quick and hard that I was surprised it didn't rip. He moved his eyes up and down the paper before handing it back to me.
"There's a seat in the back. Next to Green over there."
I looked at the back of the class to see an empty seat in the corner. Right next to it, was a guy with brown hair and sheepish smile.
"Actually, sir, it's Gil-" the boy started.
"Mr. Matten." Mr. Dread said coldly, and the boy immediately shut up.
I worked my way through the desks and the eyes on my back. Once I reached the back, I quickly took a seat and let out a breath I didn't know I was holding in.
I took out the green notebook I saved for biology and a mechanical pencil. Mr. Dread was explaining some processes on the board.
"I hope you all haven't forgotten what you've learned in the years passed, but knowing the people at this school everyone probably has the brain of a dead cell." He said dryly, and no one dared to interrupt. "We're going to quickly go over the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration, and make sure to take notes. There will be a pop-quiz next class."
Everyone groaned and soon, there was a shuffling of papers and pencils.
"Remember, photosynthesis and cellular respiration include separate processes, such as the Krebs cycle, the Calvin cycle..."
I held the pencil in my hand and began writing down the notes on a blank page in my spiral. After a while or him giving notes and the class writing it down, my hand was starting to cramp. I set the pencil down and began to massage my hand. Luckily, he was done giving notes and was going over them to review, so I didn't have to write anymore.
"Psst." Someone whispered, and my senses snapped back to attention. "Hey, new kid."
I turned to my left to see the kid from earlier. He looked kind of sleepy and I realized he had just woken up. I was amazed he wasn't caught.
"What's your name?" He asked quietly.
"Lukas, Lukas Booke." I replied, whispering. He seemed pretty nice by his tone, and he had a gentle smile.
"Cool," he said. "I'm Gil Matten."
Gil held out his hand for me to shake it, and I did, smiling as well.
"You mind sending me a pic of the notes? So I could study?" He asked, looking a bit embarrassed. "I-uh, fell asleep."
There was a bit of caution telling me not to do it, but I was too nice to just push him away. It's one of my weaknesses.
"Sure Gil."
"Thanks."
I pulled out my phone and we quickly exchanged numbers when Mr. Dread wasn't looking. Then I took a picture of the notes and hit send. He gave a thumbs up and I nodded. Then I continued to listen to Mr. Dread.
He was just explaining some review, so I decided to get lost in thoughts. It's usually how I pass time when it looks like I'm paying attention. I started to think about my mom, and what happened recently. If I'm able to fit in, and how-
"Hey. Lukas." Gil whispered once again and I turned to look at him. I gave him a look that tells him I'm paying attention.
"It's your first day, right?" He asked, as I nodded, pushing my glasses up again. Man, I'll have to remember to get those adjusted. "Well, just a word of advice-"
"Would Mr. Matten and blonde guy over there like to say what they're gossiping about?" Mr. Dread said harshly, folding his arms over his chest and sending a cold glare to me and Gil. We both gulped in sync as the everyone turned to look at us and snickered. I could feel my cheeks flush with embarrassment as Gil replied: "n-no sir."
"This is your warning. Consider yourselves lucky." He snarled, before returning back to the lesson. I let out a shaky breath before paying attention once more.
After a few moments, I heard a slight 'bing' come from my backpack, luckily, not loud enough for anyone to hear. I checked to see if the teacher was looking before pulling out my phone. There was a message from Gil.
Watch out for Jesse Lynn.
