Chapter Seven
It was past nightfall when Levi heard some commotion from outside his office. He got up to go look out the door, but only got there in time to see Emi turning a corner.
Since Erwin had assigned him to keeping track of the girl, he had to follow her to see what she was doing. She had Melody's saddlebag hung over her shoulder, most likely fill of stuff.
Once she got out to the pasture, she called Melody over. The paint gladly trotted over to its owner, and Emi didn't even tack up the horse. She crawled onto the horses bare back, gripping part of its mane as she kicked Melody's sides lightly.
Levi, not having time to tack up his horse, just hopped on his own horse bareback and followed after her.
She wandered around a bit before finding a raised flat space to set up her things. She placed her saddlebag down and got a few things out, some of them being a large piece of paper, the moonstone shard, a few different things to write and draw with, and the couple books she got from the library. She sat down, using rocks to keep her paper from blowing away in even the smallest breeze.
She flipped through the books, jotting down notes of useful information on her huge piece of paper. Levi looked over to the moonstone, noticing how it was glowing in the dark. A bright silvery light was seemingly seeping out of the gemstone, lighting up the paper and books so that Emi could see.
"Only activated by a Mage, can only be deactivated by a Mage, yada yada," Emi mumbled. She drew the best circle she could and started writing in the middle of it. She drew two arrows which connected, each of them pointing to the circle. She went to write under the line but paused.
She looked up, noticing Levi who was a behind her and wasn't very close to her. Emi turned herself around so that she was looking at the general direction that Levi was in. "If you're gonna be here, at least come help," she said grumpily to him.
Levi was slightly surprised that she knew where he was, but he probably would have been able to do the same thing.
He urged his horse forwards and towards Emi, hopping off when he got close. He walked over and looked at the paper, seeing all the notes. He noticed that the writing in the circle said 'The Walls' in fancy calligraphy.
"How much space is in the walls all combined?" Emi asked.
"Almost seven hundred twenty four thousand kilometers. Why?" Lavi asked. He watched as Emi picked a book up and started flipping through it, skimming through each chapter until she found the one that she was wanting.
"This is why," Emi told him. She placed the book down and Levi looked at it. It was some sort of directions to convert the kilometers effected to the kilograms of moonstone used.
"What does it mean kilograms of moonstone used?" Levi asked.
Emi grabbed a smaller piece of paper out of the saddlebag and started writing on it.
"A quarter of the total area effected," Emi mumbled. "Divide that by five, which is 36.2. Round that down to 36, and multiply by two, and you get 72."
Levi listened as she mumbled some more, writing important things down.
"To deactivate it, we'd need at least two heavily trained Mages," Emi muttered.
"Deactivate it?" Levi asked.
Emi nodded. "See, you can activate moonstone so that it gives specific commands to Titans."
"You can give specific commands to Titans?"
"Yes. With these." She held up the moonstone. "It's believed to be a part of a second moon that exploded hundreds of millions of years ago. Since they're part of the moon, pieces are able to control Titans within a specific area," Emi explained.
"A piece this size would barely have any range, but it would have a strong hold on whatever Titans were in its range. The larger the piece, the weaker hold it has on Titans and they're able to have more control over themselves " Emi told him.
"Is this how you control Buddy?" Levi asked.
Emi shook her head. "Buddy can't be mind controlled, no matter how big or small the piece is," she told him. "One, because you can't control what isn't there, and two, he's believed to be one of the first few titans to appear, and those ones are supposed to have magical powers."
Everything was silent as Emi took a break to stare up at the stars and moon. She relaxed a bit and a small smile crept across her face as pleasant memories returned to her.
"So what about controlling Titans? What does that have to do with anything?" Levi asked.
"What it has to do with things is that the Titans are most likely being controlled by a piece of moonstone. If we can deactivate the moonstone the Titans will go back to normal and leave you guys alone. Everything will be peaceful for everyone again," Emi told him.
"And how would we deactivate it?" Levi asked.
"First, we need to locate it. I'm completely sure that it's in Wall Sina, but I'm not sure where. Maybe down more towards Shiganshina, since the Titans seem to be even more distracted down there and I doubt that they'd put the moonstone in the direct middle," Emi said, looking at the paper she had.
"Then, we need two or more trained Mages to deactivate it, but I'm not sure how many would be willing, if any at all, of course. I practice magic, but I'm not even close to enough to be even one part of it, and it would take years upon years until I would be able to do it all alone," Emi said. Her eyebrows knit themselves together as she thought more.
"And time is one thing we don't have," Levi said.
Emi nodded, knocking a few strands of her fiery red hair into her eyes. She pushed them away before starting to talk. "Maybe we could have enough time if we manage to take out the Titans that destroyed the gates," Emi said.
She got out more paper from her saddlebag and started sketching out three humanoid figures, putting one on each piece of paper. She added details as quickly as she could and added notes as she went. It was messy, but good enough for the amount of time spent on each.
"Now, I'm calling this one the Female Titan due to how it has a feminine figure," Emi explained. "It was the one that lead the Titans to the wall. Its voice had some sort of mind controlling power which made the Titans all follow it. However, the thing that confuses me the most, is that it disappeared at one point."
Emi then pointed to one with protective plates on it. "This is the one everyone has been calling the Armored Titan. It can run pretty fast, it has protective plates like armour covering most of it, and when it's sprinting it can bust through things such as the gates. When the Female Titan disappeared, this one took its place."
"The final one," Emi said, moving her finger to the third and final drawing, "is the Colossal Titan. I didn't notice much that special about it, but it has barely any skin covering it. It's very tall, and was able to kick down the Shiganshina gate. That s really the only thing I know, though," Emi told Levi.
Everything was silent again as Emi packed up her things again. She got up, bringing her saddlebag with her. As she hopped back up on Melody to go back, she looked off into the distance, wondering if everything would work out.
