Chapter Eight
Emi woke up to someone knocking on the door to her room. She blinked a couple times, slightly annoyed that someone would wake her up. As she stretched and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes, the knocking became louder and faster.
"I'm coming! Hold on for a minute, won't you?" she yelled to the person.
"We're gonna start training today!" Hanji sang in an overly excited tone.
Emi groaned and looked around, grabbing a change of clothes. She quickly changed and reached for her brush, grabbing a hairbands while she was at it.
As she was brushing her hair, she looked outside to see that the sun was just rising. She glared at the sun for being so low in the sky, but she felt like she was gonna punch everyone once she got outside for starting work so early.
As she put her hair up in a bun she walked over to the door to open it. The excited expression on Hanji's face quickly changed to confusion when she saw the girl. She looked extremely tired still, and even more grumpy than normal.
"Why would you wake me up so early?" Emi groaned.
"Because we're gonna go train you!" Hanji squealed.
"What the fuck does that mean? I'm already pretty good at fighting," Emi told her. She stretched again, yawning as she tried not to fall asleep.
To Emi's surprise, Hanji didn't yawn back. She just kept on talking.

Emi was completely spaced out as she pretended to listen to Keith Shadis, who was yelling at her to try and 'break her spirits' or something. She had finally came up with a plan to find the moonstone that was being used to control the Titans, but she still needed to find a time to do it. Supposedly, she was to train all day for days on end until she finally became a 'good soldier,' but she already was one, at least in her mind and pretty much all of Melodia's.
"Are you listening to me?" Keith yelled.
Emi sighed, closing her eyes. "Honestly? No. Not at all."
Keith's eye twitched and he decided to move on to the next test. It was a balance test that used what looked like a baby swing to test how good of balance the the soldier would have in the air. Of course, Emi practically aced it, only struggling a bit in the beginning because she had no idea how to balance in it.
"Her balance is almost perfect," Keith grumbled, still a bit mad that she wouldn't be intimidated by him.
Hanji lowered Emi to the ground and Emi got herself out of the contraption. There weren't that many tests, but most of them took a typical teenager three years at least to master. Then again, Emi wasn't a typical teenager. She wasn't even a teenager.
The next test was hand-to-hand combat, and Keith got his best student to go out and fight the girl. Emi seemed unimpressed that they would have a simple fifteen-year-old fight her, but she fought them anyways, easily beating them despite going way easier than she would on anyone else.
She stretched her arms until she heard a satisfying pop in each of them. "Hand-to-hand combat is a skill I'm particularly good at," she said, smirking to herself.
She turned back to the others and looked at them expectantly. Keith seemed impressed with how quickly she managed to take down his best student, but it was just barely noticeable.
"Well, next we will be testing your ability to use the gear. If you do not pass this test, you'll be as useless as Titan chow," Keith told her.
Emi sighed, wanting so badly to send something sarcastic his way, or any form or disrespect to him, but she decided against it. She just wanted to get the training done with so that she could go back to her own work.
Emi tightened the strap on her gear. She was excited to see how the gear would work, how she would do in it, and just to fly without the held of a wyvern.
Though, she was also nervous. This was her first time flying using something man-made, and she wasn't sure how sturdy it was, how smooth the controls were, nothing.
She took a deep breath before walking over to where everyone was waiting for her. She walked with her head held high and her back straight. The way she walked gave off confidence, or that was at least why she was taught to walk that way, and it just became natural for her after a bit.
Hanji explained to her how to use it, and Emi felt more confident after knowing how it worked, even if it didn't show on the outside. She shot her hooks into a tree, happy from just getting step one down.
As she not-so-gracefully flew through the air, she enjoyed the feeling of the wind against her face. She didn't, however, enjoy the feeling of the tree against her face.
She managed to catch herself on a tree branch, hoisting herself up to stand on it. She placed her hand on the truck of the tree and looked around to find a path she could take. She jumped from one tree branch to another for a bit, finally working up the courage to fly again.
The force of moving through the air at such a high speed pushed her hair back, causing it to whip around wildly. Strands of hair smacked against each other, getting tangled, causing her to dread when she had to brush it.
She saw the tree draw in closer and her eyes widened. She accidentally pushed the button to release the hooks from the tree, and she began falling towards the ground while still moving forwards. She fumbled with the controls for a bit before finally shooting the hooks out again.
She still found herself falling, but one side of the gear was trying to support her weight all by itself, and she smacked into the trunk of the tree. She had felt worse pain, but it still hurt.
The one hook supporting her slipped out of the tree, causing her to fall the last few feet to the ground. She groaned in pain as she laid on the forest floor to try and regain her composure. As soon as she got up, she dusted herself off, getting frustrated at the machine she couldn't work with.
Determined to find a way to control the gear, she shot herself back into the air. She did a few unintentional flips as she soared through the air again. After a while, she found a way to make it work. She shot her hooks into a tree, let herself fly forwards a bit, dropped the hooks again, and then repeated the process.
After a couple minutes of doing that, she felt more confident in herself. She allowed herself to relax and have fun, but she flew into yet another tree as soon as she lost focus.
She fell to the ground, trying to catch herself with her gear only to hear a clicking sound and nothing happen. She managed to turn herself over so that she was facing the ground which felt like it would take a lifetime to get to.
As she got closer to the ground, a blue flash sped by, catching the falling girl. The wyvern slowed down as soon as Emi was safely on his back, and he slowly glided out of the forest, lifting himself back into the air by flapping hid wings every once in a while.
Emi sighed, disappointed in herself for not being able to figure it out. She was sort of hoping, but she felt like a part of her knew that she wouldn't be able to do it. Melodians tended to be far better with animals and nature than they were with machines, but they were still pretty good with machines.

"Do you know how Titans carry themselves around?" Hanji asked. She had been following Emi around for the past hour or so, asking questions and then writing them down in her notebook. Emi only started answering in hopes that the girl would leave.
"With their legs?" Emi said, annoyed.
"I know that. But, like, how? Their legs couldn't possibly carry that much weight," Hanji said.
"You seriously don't know?" Emi asked, looking to Hanji. "Have you noticed how they turn into smoke which dissolves the body and blood?"
"Yes, I have. Why?" Hanji asked.
"Well, it's actually pretty interesting. See, a Titan's body is pretty much just air so close that it creates almost an illusion. Your hand can't pass through it, but the Titan can lift itself and move easily. When you chop off part of it like an arm, you're disrupting that part of the illusion and it dissapears, and then it takes a bit to gather more air to form a new arm," Emi said.
"So, why is the nape of the neck the part that kills them?" Hanji asked.
"I'm not completely sure about that part, but we do know that it's the only truly real part of a Titan," Emi explained.
"Interesting. Now- Wait. Did you say we?" Hanji asked, noticing Emi's slip up.
"No. I said I," Emi said, swiftly covering it up with a lie.
"I heard you say we," Hanji said.
Emi shrugged. "Maybe you heard me wrong?" she suggested.
"Maybe..." Hanji said, trailing off.
Emi entered her room and Hanji finally got the hint. She looked at her books, which were mainly just maps of the area inside the Walls and information on the lands, history of the Walls, and little facts about them.
She placed the heavy books on her desk, keeping one to start skimming through it to find information on Sina. The sounds of paper being thrown around as it flew from one side of the book to the other was all that was able to be heard in the room for a solid two minutes before she finally found the part she was looking for.
As she began skimming through the pages, searching for any information on any small caverns or anything that could be holding the moonstone, she heard a tapping on her window. She looked up to see her blue wyvern tapping on her window with something in his mouth.
Her eyes widened when she saw what it was. A metallic, hot pink egg was clutched in the wyvern's beak-like jaw. She rushed over to the window, opening it and wrapping her fingers around the surprisingly small egg.
Mage flew off as soon as the egg was safe, and Emi closed the window. Inspecting the egg, she saw the pointy scales covering it, showing that it would be a female. She traced her finger along a scale, being careful to not slice her finger open.
