Chapter 5: The Plaza Mayor...
#210 in Teen Fiction
"Katia!"
Hearing my name from behind,
I turn to see that it was Alvaro jogging up to me with a smile on his face.
"Hey." greeting me once he stopped in front of me.
"Hi Al. Did you want something?" asking him.
"Umm yeah. Are you heading to the cafeteria right now?"
"Yes. It is lunch time." stating the obvious.
"Yeah it is." nodding his head in agreement.
He stood there staring at me quietly which was making me feel a bit awkward. "Did you want to tell me something or...?"
"Umm yeah sorry. Can I walk with you?"
"Sure Al." chuckling then turned back to the direction of the cafeteria where Alicia was waiting for me.
"So." he says from the side of me.
"So." responding back. He was acting strange and I wanted to know why.
"So, are you doing anything this weekend?"
"Well, Alicia and I were planning to go to the movies on Friday and I was spending the night at her house. What are you doing?"
"Well, I was hoping to go to the movies, with you." making me stop walking I glance over at him.
"With me?" making sure I heard him right.
"Yes with you. I want to ask you out on a date. I've been wanting to for a while now but, every time I get the nerve to ask, I back down." frowning as he says it.
"Why?" wondering if I'm not an approachable person.
"Because Katia. I like you, a lot and you make me nervous."
Taken back from his confession I ask him. "You do?"
His hand took mine in his. "I really do. By any chance. Do you like me?" his tone hopeful.
"I do like you Al." smiling up at him.
His smile broadened which was cute. "Really? Does that mean that you'll go out with me this weekend?"
"I would have to talk to Alicia since we did have plans."
"Of course, of course. How about we get a group and all of us go so no pressure or awkwardness?" suggesting.
"Sounds good. I'll ask her."
"Good, come on let's go eat." still holding on to my hand he pulled me down the hallway towards the cafeteria.

"Mami I'm home." closing the door behind me once I get home.
"Hello? Anyone here?" calling around as I walk through the living room then kitchen.
Reaching the kitchen island, I see a piece of paper and a box on top of it. Picking up the note that it's from my mom I read it.
"Katia, I had to run some errands and I will be back in a few hours. There is dinner already made on the stove if you are hungry. Call me if anything.
Love you,
Mami
P.S: The package is for you. Show me what it is when I get home."
Putting the note down, I stare at the small package. It looks like the one I received yesterday. A part of me is curious and wants to open it and the other part is afraid because I don't know who it's from.
Sighing, I decide to open it. Unwrapping the brown paper I then open the box. Lifting what seems like a post card, my eyes widen at the picture in front of it. It was a picture of the well known Plaza Mayor. The plaza my friend and I used to walk through everyday from school and the plaza that I first met... him.
My hand trembled as I turned the card over to see if it said anything. I even said a quick prayer hoping that it was blank, but it wasn't.

That's all that was written and it meant something to me, to him.
Picking up the box, I looked through it to see if there was something else inside of it but there wasn't. Staring at the post card I tried not to panic. The tears that wanted to flow were held in and my heart rate that wanted to beat a million miles per minute stayed in a steady beat. I wasn't going to assume anything. It could be someone else who knew about this specific date. Someone who wanted to mess with my mind and emotions.
It couldn't be him. He was gone. They made sure of that.
Taking the box and the post card with me I run out of the kitchen heading up the staircase to my room. Putting the items down on my bed, I go into my closet towards the back. Reaching the top shelve I retrieve the memory box that I keep up there. Bringing it out, I walk up to my bed and set it down then step away from it.
Time passed. Not really knowing how long I stood there staring at the box, I inhaled and exhaled giving me the nerve to open it.
Slowly sitting down in front of it, I lift up the lid to the box. Rummaging through the items inside of it, I pull out the picture. Picking up the post card, I hold it up to the picture and sigh.
The picture of him and I smiling. The first picture we took. The picture of us standing in the Plaza Mayor where he said he first saw me and the place where he asked me to be his.
Flipping the picture over, I see the smudged black ink that the date was written on...

The day that we became each other's only. Tu y yo para siempre. Mi Katia.
I only realized that I was crying when I noticed the tear drops that hit the black ink. Flipping the picture over, a small smile formed on my lips. That day was one of the happiest I had since I had moved to Spain. The day that Mateo Garcia Sanchez, the son of Spain's General Admiral Fernando Garcia Sanchez, asked me to be his and only his.
