Chapter Three
Upon waking up, Maddie realised it was her phone which had disturbed her slumber; she rolled over and grabbed it from the floor where it was lay charging. Someone was ringing her, and it was revealed to be....John. Great. "Uhh!" Maddie groaned in annoyance "what now?" she hesitantly answered the call, ending the irritating ringing that she already knew she needed to change. "Hello?" she greeted, only to hear the familiar voice of her guardian "hey brat" lovely as always "just calling to let you know that I'll be back by this afternoon" now that woke the teenager up; she pushed herself up so that she was leaning on her elbow "why?" she questioned. This triggered the man as he exclaimed "it doesn't matter why!!" Maddie rolled her eyes, thankful her guardian couldn't see her "alright, I was only asking" she defended. John continued to snap at the girl "yeah? Well don't!!" he warned "asking questions gets you into trouble, you know that!!" he wasn't wrong. Maddie had the scars to prove it. After that, John hung up to return to whatever he was previously doing. Sighing, Maddie took note on the fact that it was seven O clock; she had an hour till she was meant to get up for school but decided now was as good a time as any. She highly doubted that she would be able to return to the land of dreams after that eventful phone call. After stretching her aching limbs, Maddie decided - since John would be home by this afternoon - to clean up; the apartment was rather clean to say they had only just moved in. The fifteen-year-old threw out the moving boxes that were piled up by the front door, she cleaned the very few dishes she had made from the previous night, she double checked that she had bought everything she needed from the food store and even went so far as to clean the bathroom. By the time she had finished, it was 7:45. Sighing, Maddie sat on her bed for the remainder of that hour until her eight O clock alarm could be heard; she hopped up and once again stretched before making a B-line for the just cleaned bathroom which still stunk of bleach. It wasn't long before she was out, dried and had changed into her clothes. Most items were the same as yesterday as...well they were all she had to wear, but Maddie had another top - a white V neck.
After she had tied herhair up into a messy bun, Maddie grabbed her already packed shoulder bag andentered the kitchen where - like the morning previous - she grabbed an appleand bottle of water and placed them both into her bag, along with her phone, keys, and wallet. With that, the teenager left the apartment, locked the door, andventured towards her new school; she sped up her pace upon realising it washalf past eight and she remembered she was meeting Renesmee outside the gate atschool. After less than ten minutes of half walking half running, the fifteenyear old reached her destination and spotted her friend stood by their meetingplace "hey" Maddie greeted, earning a bright smile "hope youweren't waiting long" Renesmee reassured her that she had been there forless than a minute as she surprised the newbie with a short and friendlyembrace. "Let's head in, it's getting chilly" Maddie suggested as shewrapped her arms around herself for warm; they quickly entered the building tosee students and teachers going about their business, as well as people whocould be seen wearing the visitors' badges. "What's going on?" Maddieasked with a raised brow, confusion clear within her voice "it's career'sday" Renesmee stated simply "people from different businesses andjobs come in to talk to the students and help them decide what kind of job theymight want in the future" it sounded rather impressive and helpful"it takes up the whole school day too, so classes are cancelled" nowthat was something Maddie liked to hear. Renesmee offered her friend to spendthe day with her "we can look at all of the stalls together if you want?"she suggested, earning both a nod and a grin "sure, sounds like aplan" at least she wouldn't have to stare at that map Alice had made forher. The two friends spent their time within the canteen until the bell rang, indicating everyone to begin their look around at all the stalls - there wereat least five or six within every classroom. As they began, Maddie made thesame comment she had thought when it came to the drawn-up map, earning achuckle from the slightly older teenager "Alice told me about that"she smirked "she did the same thing for me when I first statedschool".
The two girls paced around for an hour, filling their arms with different booklets, leaflets, application forms and many free pens, pencils, and supplies; there was a lot!! And they weren't even halfway through yet!! "My granddad is here today" Renesmee revealed as they walked through the hallways to the next classroom "he's a doctor at the local hospital" Maddie smiled as she asked if her friend wanted to visit the man "yeah, I think his stall is in your English class". And on that note, they left for that classroom. Upon entering the room, Renesmee looked around until her eyes landed on her granddad; Maddie followed her eager friend as they approached a tall man with blonde hair who wore a traditional long white doctor's coat. "Hey Carlisle" his granddaughter happily greeted the man with a tight hug after placing her arm full of items down "hey sweetie" he kissed the top of her head before the two parted; Renesmee pulled her friend so that they were stood side by side "this is my new friend I told you about, Maddie Hunter". The two shook hands as they greeted one another "it's a pleasure to meet you Maddie" the teenager smiled, though she couldn't help but take note of how cold his hand was - just like the other Cullen's. Was it a family thing? "Like wise Mr Cullen" the man chuckled at how formal the young girl was "please, just call me Carlisle" he insisted "Mr Cullen makes me sound old" all three laughed at his comment. Onto the topic that Carlisle was fighting - the girl's scent had hit the doctor's nose as soon as she had walked through the door, even before that; the 'kids' weren't wrong. Her scent was one of the strongest and luring he had ever smelt and was indeed taking him more retrain then usual to keep control of himself. "So, tell me, what do you want to do when you're older Maddie?" Carlisle asked as he sat on the edge of the table that held all of his promotion materials for the hospital; the teenage girl shrugged as her friend looked at one of the leaflets that she had collected "I've never really thought about it honestly" she revealed "I guess I'll just have to look around to day and take everything in". It sounded like her only play. And Carlisle wanted to help her with that plan.
"Shall I walk you through the medical industry?" he offered, earning both a smile and a nod "yes please" and with that, the doctor began his practiced presentation; Maddie appeared amazed by what she was listening to. "You act like you've never seen a doctor before" Renesmee laughed in amusement from her friend's impressed reaction; Maddie became quiet as she rubbed the back of her neck "well...that's because I...haven't". The grandfather and granddaughter shared the same reaction of wide shocked eyes "what?!" the young girl exclaimed "how have you never been seen by a doctor before?!" she asked; Carlisle butted in as more important questions came to mind "have you never had a monthly check up?" he asked "surely you've had all of your vaccinations?". Maddie rose a confused brow as she asked what a vaccination was "I've never actually been to a hospital or even been seen by a doctor before so I guess not" she revealed as if it were normal; her friend, nor the visiting doctor, could believe what they were hearing. "Em...well maybe you should talk to an adult at home about taking a trip to see a doctor at the local hospital?" Carlisle heavily suggested; the fifteen-year-old girl didn't look convinced "doubt it" she simply said "John doesn't like doing that kind of stuff". As soon as the words left Maddie mouth, she realised she had let something slip she really shouldn't have; her friend questioned her statement "what do you mean?" she asked "why wouldn't he?". Not answering the slightly older girl, Maddie dismissed herself as she used the toilet as an excuse; she practically ran out of the room. Renesmee, concerned even more for her new found friend, turned towards her grandfather who was looked over towards the door that Maddie had just rushed through "somethings seriously not right and you know it!!" she exclaimed; the man couldn't help but agree "see what else you can get out of her" he instructed "and keep an eye on her". Not needing to be told twice, Renesmee embraced her grandfather one last time before going off to find her friend; Carlisle took a moment to pull out his phone and sent a message to Alice, asking she keep an eye of the girl he had newly met. When asked why he was showing such concern, the doctor assured his 'daughter' that he would explain when they were back home later.
Maddie, after rushing to the nearest free toilet, finished her business and made her way through the building until she found herself entering the canteen; that was where she discovered Renesmee who was sat with her family - the bell had rung for everyone to have their break. "Hey Maddie, are you okay?" a voice spoke from behind the young girl; Maddie turned to see that its owner was Alice. She returned the greeting "I'm fine, just looking for Renesmee" she explained; the older teenager nodded with a smile "well she's sat over there with us" she informed before making an offer "why don't you join us?". While it was a kind suggestion, it was clear the young girl wasn't sure "I don't know, I em...I don't think Edward, Jasper or Rosalie like me all that much". Taken back by her statement, Alice asked why she thought such a think which earned a sigh "yesterday when I had classes with Jasper and Edward, they didn't talk to me what so ever and acted as if they couldn't wait to get away from me" Maddie explained "and whenever I see her, Rosalie is normally glaring at me". The young woman made a mental note to have a strong word with her fellow named vampires "I promise it'll be fine" she reassured "come on, please?" she really wanted Maddie to sit with them - especially as Carlisle had messaged her less than five minutes ago; the newbie chuckled at her friends pleads "alright, alright". Now that certainly earned a bright smile. The two made their way over to the table and sat down; Renesmee smiled upon seeing her aunt and friend - she greeted the two before asking if Maddie were alright "I'm fine" was all the younger teenage would say. Surprisingly, Edward spoke up as he turned towards his daughter's newest friend "we haven't been properly introduced" he stated before beginning "I'm Edward, this is Jasper, Rosalie, Emmitt and Bella" he pointed to each person he named "and you already now Alice and Renesmee". They all kindly said hello to the girl who returned their smiles, as well as introduced herself "it's nice to meet you all, I'm Maddie Hunter". The table full of 'teenagers' spoke for the entire break until the bell rung, telling the students to start their career search once again; Renesmee and Maddie said goodbye to the older students and decided to return to the classroom that Carlisle was located in. Whilst sating by the man's stall, Maddie noticed something on the other side of the room "I'm just gonna go look at that stall over there" she informed her friend who nodded "alright, I'll wait here for her". As she approached the stall, Maddie read the large sigh that told the students what the stall represented 'University for Performing Arts'. "Hi, my name's Jessica" the woman that worked for the university greeted the new student "what kind of performing arts are you interested in?" she asked; Maddie explained how she loved acting, singing, dancing, and drawing. This earned a smile from the woman "well do cover all four of those" she explained "why don't I give you some leaflets and booklets to look at? You still have a couple of years before you must decide anything and trust me, we're not going anywhere" she offered; Maddie nodded and soon found her already full arms expand by five more information products - she knew she would be reading them all later tonight. "Thank you" she remained polite until she turned and returned to her friend and her grandfather "we seriously need to find somewhere to put all of these booklets and leaflets" Renesmee stated upon the sight of the younger girls full arms; Maddie chuckled as she agreed "I think I saw some bags in front of reception". Well, they sure knew their next stop.
Soon enough, the school day once again ended. The hours had passed by quickly; Maddie had spent time with the small family during lunch and breaks; they liked her, and it was nice to not be alone. Though some of them still didn't really talk to her. As soon as the last bell rung, Maddie said goodbye to the unknown group of vampires, including the half vampire who gave her a tight squeeze, before making her way through the car park and ventured through the streets. It wasn't long before the teenager reached the apartment and, true to his word, John's car was parked outside; the girl took a deep breath before she entered the apartment. "I'm back" she quietly announced as she closed the front door; she looked around until her eyes landed on her guardian who was slouched on the sofa as he watched TV - empty bottles of beer and vodka surrounding him. What Maddie didn't know what that John, whilst back in their previous hometown, had had an explosive argument with one of his old mates who he was staying with; that was the reason he was back so soon and in a thunderous mood. It didn't take long for the man to turn and take his anger out on his young charge; his verbal attack quick morphed into a physical one. A beating broke out and lasted for ten minutes, though it felt like ten hours to the young teenager; Maddie refused to cry or scream as she knew it would only increase the time - past experiences proved such a thing. Eventually, the attack was over and the girl somehow managed to drag herself from the living room where the assault took place to the bedroom; John had thankfully left to continue his drinking at the local bar. The fifteen-year-old knew she needed to take a shower to rid herself of the blood and spit; the water that hit her body strung like hell - she knew her body would be covered in bruises and that one or more of her ribs had to be cracked. But her main worry was her face. Maddie could feel a black eye forming, blood was pouring from her split lip, as well as her nose, a gash was covering her cheek bone and there was another on the top of her forehead from where John had forced her to the floor, smacking her head against the wall. Fighting through the pain, Maddie hurried to clean herself before leaving the shower and entering her bedroom; her whole body ached as she dried off and changed into her pyjama shorts and a stained top. Once dressed, she brushed and parted her damp hair into two parts before braiding them; she returned to the bathroom where she could examine the damage that decorated her face. "How the hell am I gonna explain this tomorrow?" Maddie wondered to herself, trying to produce a reasonable and believable lie; her head was throbbing, so she decided to sleep on it. After forcing herself to eat an apple, the teenager returned to her room for the night and lay herself down on her 'bed', covered her body with the whole ridden blanket and allowed herself to drift into a fitful slumber. It was going to be a long night.
