Three Years to Go.
By the age of 15, Adrien's father had started to train him to be a master manipulator. He was a superstar model and on the cover of hundreds of magazines and had fans everywhere. His father took him to every business lunch and asked him to tell him who was and who wasn't trustworthy.
It didn't take Adrien long to figure out that his gift must have something with that. But his father wouldn't tell what it was till he was 18. So he continued the training his father had him doing. He found he loved modelling and he didn't hate the business side of things. He might not mind the life his father had planned for him. He did have one secret, he had created an online persona called Chat. He never showed his face without a mask and cat ears on. He would use it to flirt with his model friends. He wondered if one day he would be able to use this to take some of his model friends on dates and use the skills his father taught him with them.
Marinette on the other hand, at age 15 had started to noticed she could not tell her parents no. Or her friends for that matter. She always had to tell them yes or do what they told her. She hated it. She knew when she didn't want to do what she was being asked but she couldn't stop herself. She never bothered to ask her parents about her gift, she knew they would follow the rules and not tell her until she was 18.
The only freedom she found was in designing. Her parents had taken note of her love for it so they gave her a sewing machine and let her take classes on sewing and designing. She had started an Instagram account for her designs. She called herself My Lady Fashion and had quite a following and had sold view clothing items. No one knew who she was, she never showed her face.
Chat and My Lady Fashion were very good social media friends, they even shared content with each other, to help grow each other presents. They never would have guessed that their social media friend sat next to them in class.
Marinette and Adrien were still best friends. They had added two friends to there group Ayla and Nino. The four of them were always together, always breaking off into pairs when needed. Their classmates hopped that the four them where in some way soulmates, they couldn't imagine them in any other grouping. Ayla had a blog dedicated to learning about Chat and My Lady's identities. Nino helped her often and had dreams of making music or movies he really couldn't decide between the two.
One day Ayla and Marinette had claimed some girl time, they were sitting in Marinette's room, where she was working a new top for Ayla. "So girl, tell me who do you hope your soulmate is?" Ayla leaned forward wrecking Marinette's angle.
"Someone I don't have to listen to" she muttered under her breath, she caught Alyas look, and quickly correct, "I don't know, I haven't really thought about it. Have you?"
"Girl of course I have." she leaned back daring Marinette to ask.
"Well come on don't leave me hanging! Tell me who it is!" Ayla couldn't help but laugh at her friend's desperation.
"Nino! He and I just click you know? I want to be a reporter and he wants to film stuff, we work well together. And just think if Nino is my soul mate, and Adrien was yours our group could stay together forever!"
Marinette laughed hard, "Sorry Ayla that can't happen." Alya looked at her confused, "Okay here's a secret that you can't tell anyone." Marinette closed her book and leaned forward. Ayla leaned in closely. "It's impossible that Adrien and I are soulmates because we got out gifts on the same day, and the God and Goddess don't play matchmaker."
"Mari are you sure impossible is the right word? You never know, maybe they didn't talk about it before." Alya teased her, "I've seen the way you two look at each other, there's no way friendship is the only thing on your mind. Tell me what you really think of Adrien."
There it was, the order she couldn't say no to, she had to tell Ayla. "Well, he's an amazing best friend and I would be lying if I said it wouldn't be nice to be his soulmate. But he's my friend so I should look elsewhere." and against her will, her cheeks lit up, her mind wondered unwillingly to the boy who had slowly started to steal her heart.
"Girl you have the look! You lied there is someone you'd like to be their soulmate! You have got to tell me!" Ayla placed her hands on the girl's knees refusing to let her up till Mari told, not that Mari had a choice anyway.
"You don't know him, he's in the class above us, his name is Luka. He's in that band that Adrien sometimes plays with when his father lets him. So Adrien introduced us. And he's really sweet. And he wants to see my designs and have me create shirts for the band, so we are going out for coffee." she started to giggle, happy to share this with someone after all.
"Girl, are you going to risk falling for someone who is not your soulmate?" Alya looked closely at Mari.
It wasn't uncommon for kids their age to date even if it meant falling for someone who wasn't their soulmate. Sometimes they would get lucky and they would be drawn to their soulmate. If they were lucky in a different way, their soulmate had also fallen in love with some else and they could have a great friendship that strengthened them. Some of them waited and found them after their 18th birthday those were considered the luckiest because they would only ever know the love of there soulmate. The unlucky ones were the ones who delt unrequited love or their soulmate was someone they hated. Fortunately, most of them had a choice and could make something work regardless of everything.
Mari, however, had a sinking feeling that she wouldn't have a choice on if she got to be with her soulmate or not if her family and friend's ability to control was any sign. So why not have some fun while. "Ya I think I will, he'd find his soulmate before me anyway, so he'd leave me and I'd let him go if he really likes his soulmate enough, that is if he'd even date me."
Alya was impressed, "Well if you're going to risk it, maybe and I will ask Nino out..."
"Great Adrien and I will always be wheeling your dates." Mari teased. Which got a pillow that was thrown at her.
Meanwhile, the boys were having a similar conversation at a coffee shop, 'working a project' as far as Adrien's father was concerned. "So dude, have you ever thought about who your girl could be?"
Adrien in the mood to be a tease, "Who said my soulmate has to be a girl?"
"Well... umm... you know that's not as common dude so I just assumed you'd be..." Nino's stammering was cut off by Adiren's laughter.
"Sorry dude, I couldn't help it. No trust me my soulmate will be a girl. No, I made a promise to father that I would wait for my soulmate and not date until then. Every man in my family has done that."
"Oh, so that article in the magazine isn't all fluff." Adrien nodded, "Oh well can you keep a secret?"
"Of course dude." Adrien leaned back on his chair welcoming Nino to continue.
"I want Alya to be my soulmate, so much so that I might ask her out and hope that I'm right." Noni looked at him hoping he would approve. He knew Adrien had insight past his years.
Adrien thought about it for a moment, he felt it was a good idea. "I'd say go for it, dude. I think you two have a great connection."
"Hey dude wouldn't it be great if Mari was your soulmate?" Nino winked at him.
"Sorry bro you know that's not gonna happen," Adrien said with a sad smile.
"Oh right that whole gifts on the same day thing. But you want her don't you" Nino challenged.
"Oh yes. How could you not? She's perfect. Her smile, her laugh, she the picture of perfection. But it's hopeless. So I set her up with the dude who in charge of that band I'm in." Adrien sighed.
"That Luka dude? He'd be good for Mari, very kind soul, wouldn't take advantage of her." Nino nodded.
"Ya, I could tell he liked her, I brought her to band practise a few times to inspire some designs. and Luka couldn't take his eyes off her, and she kept blushing when she saw him looking at her. So I thought why not help my best girl out." Adrien tried to play it off like it was nothing but it broke his heart. Not even the silly flirting with My Lady Fashion as Chat made him feel good about it.
Adrien may havepromised to wait for his 18th birthday to date and to the only date his soulmate, but Chat made no promise and he would have fun until his 18th brithday.
