Prologue

Plag, The God of Destruction stood with Tikki the Goddess Creation in the center of their temple waiting for today's group of parents with new babies to be given their gifts. Every gift was different, some gifts took years to develop, others happen in an instant, some have to wait till they are 18 to fully show. No one spoke of what gifts their kids were given and parents only shared what God and Goddess told them about their gifts at 18 to help them find their soul mate. Even if soulmates didn't fall in love, finding your soulmate sometimes helps your gift makes more sense.

Down the road, two families walked towards the temple just outside Paris. They had driven out together but the temple was high on the hill so they had to walk. Tom and Sabine held their little daughter Marinette close. They had come with Toms's old friend Gabriel and his new assistant Nathalie, who held his little son Adrien. Gabriel's young wife who Tom had never met had died giving birth to Adrien. Gabriel had reached out to Tom and his wife to help him with this trip as it was hard for him and as their daughter had just been born they were going anyway.

In the three months since his wife had died Gabriel had become cold. Tom hardly recognized the man standing before him, and in truth, Tom feared for little Adrien. The God and Goddess usually wanted to see the babies within three weeks of birth, however, when deaths occurred near births exceptions where made.

Plag and Tikki watched the two families walk up through one of the many windows they had in the temple. "I know only the master can see the future, but that little boy is up for a hard life." Plag leaned over the window looking at the man whose face showed no warmth and not sparing a glance at his son.

Tikki looked closely, "I'd agree with you. He'll need a wise gift."

"And a good soulmate." He looked at the family walking alongside him so full of life and love. "He needs that family, to help undo whatever wrong his father does to him."

Tikki for once agreed, they didn't normally play matchmaker but this time she makes an exception. "Well you are in charge of the boy's gifts so what do you want to give him and I'll give the compliment."

Plag thought for a moment, "It's been 150 years since we gave out the great gifts right?"

Tikki's eyes looked they could pop out of her head, "PLAG! If that boy is turned to a hard cold man that girl will be doomed."

"But look at her parents, they will raise this girl in a way that can handle the demands of her gift." Plag almost begged.

"Plag you had better be right. I'll trust your judgment." they nodded to one another headed off to there meeting rooms.

Tom placed a hand on Gabriel's shoulder, "I hope your son's gift can bring you joy, my old friend. I'm glad our trip could be a help you as well."

"I am pleased Tom, it was good to see you and your wife again. Your daughter is very lovely. She takes after her mother." He looked at Tom who beamed with at his little girl.

"I'm actually surprised she's been so quiet, we love her but she is rather fussy. I hope she grows out of it." The men chucked, "Your son sure is a charmer. Will you have him model for you in your company as he gets older?" Tom looked at the boy and hopes the answers is no.

"Of course, he's perfect, in his short life he's already inspired many new designs. I hope whatever gift he is given will help him take over for me. Otherwise, he is no use to me." Tom hid his horror, how could a father say that about his son. Especially when that son is the last reminder of your wife. They said nothing more.

When they entered the temple, Tom and Sabine when towards Tikki's meeting room, and as if little Marinette knew they were somewhere important, she got very fussy and refused to be quieted by Sabine. "I'm sorry Goddess Tikki, she is not the most well-behaved babies. We sure as she settles into life at home it will get better." Tom lowered his head as they walked closer.

"I've seen worse babies. But worry not, I have a very special gift in mind for your little one. It only gets given out every 150 years." The two parents looked confused, Tikki came closer. "Marinette I Tikki the Goddess of Creation give you the gift of Obedience." Her parents look sightly horrified. "You will listen to your parents and do all they ask of you, you will listen to your teachers and those who have authority over you. Your friends you will always follow, however, one grace that comes with your gift is that those who you don't like or ask you to something against your character will not follow." With that Tikki kissed her forehead giving the gift.

Sabine cried holding her daughter close. Tom looked dumbfounded, "So our little girl has no freedom of choice?"

"No if she is given a choice she will make it, but she will do what she's told." Tikki sighed, "Look I know its a strange gift but it is one that can be used well, and her soulmate will giver her freedom within control."

"What do you mean?" Sabine asked between tears.

"His gift is the gift of Observance. When they meet, he will know how she feels about everything she is told to do. However, when she turns 18, his commands will override even yours. If they have been raised well their love will be strong, because she will want to follow him and he will give her freedom because he will know who she feels about everything."

Her parents knew that this would not be easy for her and although they did not voice it to the Goddess they feared what would happen if this man was raised poorly and did awful things to their little girl.

Gabriel and Nathalie went into Plag's meeting room. Plag headed down towards them. "Hello Plag God of Destruction, I give you my son Adrien."

"I've been waiting for him, I have a special gift for him it is a gift that only given out every 150 years." Gabriels face lit up. Plag leaned closer to the boy. "Adrien, I give you the gift of Observance. You will understand the way people feel about things, you will know when someone is good and when someone is bad. You will have a sharp mind for others feeling and know when someone should not be trusted." Plag placed a hand on his forehead passing on that gift.

"What of his soulmate?" Nathalie spoke.

"His soulmate will be a girl who does everything she is told, she has the gift of Obedience. However, he will know when she happy or not with what she is being made to do. He if raised well will give her freedom within control. When his soulmate turns 18, his commands will override even her parents."

Gabriel was overjoyed with his son's gift. This would be great in the business world, and his son would marry his soulmate like every other man in this family. It was something that was a point of pride. Even if the girl didn't like Adrien, she would have no choice. He would raise Adrien in a way that would ensure the boy would grow up to be a master manipulator and learn to be the most trusted man in Pairs.
