A Ring Thing
Grad was a week away. The usual Sunday dinner with Tom and Sabine, Gabriel and Nathalie and Marinette and Adrien was now a planning meeting for a secret wedding. "Are you sure you two don't want to do the big wedding now?" Sabine placed her hand on Maris.
"No mom we don't, but it makes legal matters easier for Agreste Industries. But our wedding will be a big public event, so we want to do something in secret with our family and friends."
"So we would like Mari's grandmother and grandfather to join us for the living room wedding. we figure if the public gets wind of the gathering they will assume its a grad celebration and not a wedding." Adrien added.
"We want to enjoy being married without the public knowing or questions of babies." Mari pointed out.
"You do realize after the public knows your graduated they will be asking about a wedding date." Nathalie pointed.
"And we will get an engagement ring and announce a long engagement due to stuff with the company. Alya and Nino will help us do a wedding planning vlog on Alyas LadyBlog. Then we will work with Nadia for press talks. Alya and Nino need it for a project." Adrien counter.
"Well, I'm on board! I think you two have made wise decisions. This way we can enjoy your wedding as a family without all the press and Gabriel, your illness can be kept a secret." Tom added placing a hand on each of the kid's shoulders, showing his support.
"I hadn't thought of that. This is the best for everyone, I also will help you with a new house if that's what you really want. Instead of the trip." Gabriel sighed.
"Father, I don't want to be gone for four months if you're sick. You'll push yourself too hard. Mari and I will run the company so you can rest and maybe get better and live long enough to meet a grandchild." Adrien fought back. His father had been fighting them on moving since they brought it up.
"Mr. Agreste, it's not that we don't love the house you've given us, we really do love it. But it's not right for us to grow into. A house we can raise a family in." Mari did something that she'd never done before, she approached him and placed a hand on his knee.
"She loved that house you know. She wanted it to be a place where we could hide from the public." Gabriel bit back tears.
"I'm sorry sir... What if we keep the house in the family? But Adrien and I have talked and we want more than one kid. Also, that neighbourhood is an older crowd and we want our future family other kids to play with." Mari added gently.
"You are right, Marinette. You and Adrien should be allowed to create your own family home. You could also keep the space as a design space or something."
"Adrien and I have been looking at a few places and after the wedding, we will show the four of you our choice and you can give us some input. And we don't need you to by the whole house for us, we just want you to help us with the down payment. Okay? We want to pay it off with our own careers and not live off off your wealth." Mari smiled at him.
Gabriel looked up at Tom, "My dear friend, you raised one hell of a daughter. You have yourself a deal Marinette."
They talked for a few more hours about food and dress codes and the small guest list. Mari had already made a simple white dress for a class project and she planned to where that. Gabriel said she could take roses from his wife's memorial garden for her flowers. After enough of the details were settled, Mari and Adrien and slipped out and heading home.
"How did you do that? I thought I was the one who could read people?" Adrien laughed.
"You stopped reading your father when you wanted to be mad at him, and I had a guess and I acted on it." Mari shrugged.
"Oh, I really do love." He smiled at her. They pulled in to the driveway. "I have a surprise for you. close your eyes?"
Mari rolled her eyes. "Fine love." she got out of the car and smiled, eyes closed, hands waiting for him. Instead, he picked her and carried her inside. He took her upstairs and set her on the window seat. "What are you up too?" She asked. He placed a finger to her lips.
"You'll see. Open your eyes." she did, and saw Adrien on one knee, with a ring box open. It was a simple flower-shaped ring. "I love you so much, and I know that we are getting married this weekend but I still wanted you to have the ring and the story. So here I wrote you this note telling you, why I love you." He smiled up at her. "You have always made my life so much better, you are the sunshine in my life. So will you do my the greatest honour and become my wife?"
"Oh, Adrien! Yes, of course, I will marry you!" He slipped the ring on her finger. It was a perfect fit. "Oh, it's perfect! I love the flower!"
"I thought it was perfect for you." I know you have to be careful about how you wear it. So I bought you this." He handed her a simple long chain. "This way you can hide it." he smiled.
"Oh, Adrien. This is so sweet. Here I got you this, I was going to surprise you with it at the wedding but here." She handed him a simple silver ring. "After our wedding, we both have something to wear."
"Yeah, I'll just wear it on the wrong hand. Wanna video chat Alya and Nino? I think they're on a date so we can share the news."
Mari's face lit up, "Oh yes! Let's do it!" She wiped out her phone, Alya picked up after two rings.
"Hey girl what's up, it's date night, why ya calling?" Alya gave her a look implying that this better important. Nino leaned over to be in the screen. Mari brought her hand up to show them. "Oh! My! Gosh! We will be right there." the line went dead.
"We'd better make some snacks. Kettle corn?" Adrien laughed.
"Sounds good. I'll make it, you should go grab there thank you gifts." Mari stood looking at the ring on her hand.
"What makes you think they say yes?" Adrien teased.
"Please. There are our best friends. They will totally be our witness and our best man and maid of honour when the time comes." She smiled back.
The two went about there work, and by the time Ayla and Nino came, there was a bowl of popcorn and two nicely wrapped gifts sitting on the coffee table. "Alright dudes. What is happening? You are engaged?" Nino parged in.
"Ya what the heck! What happened to waiting?" Ayal sat down in a half. Taking a handful of popcorn.
"With Mr. Agrest's health, it was just easier to get married. But we are keeping it on the down-low. So this Saturday, we are having a living room wedding. And it's my grandparents, my parents, his father and Nathalie and our two witnesses." Mari explained.
"Oh..." Alya looked disappointed.
"Hey, Nino?" Nino looked up at Adrien? "Remember when we were kids and we promised we'd always be brothers?"
"Oh dude don't remind me! We spit shook on it. So gross." Nino gagged.
"Well, I was hoping my brother would stand with when I get married. Both at my secret wedding and when I have a public wedding." Nino sat slack-jawed.
"Alya, you've always been my sister, your gonna be my support that day and the public big day, right?" Mari giggled.
Nino and Alya tackled the to into hugs. "Of course!"
"Good cuz we got you gifts." Adrien guested to boxes on the table.
Nino opened his box and found a tie, pocket square, and cufflinks. "Dude, these are really nice. I love them."
Alya found a beautiful chocker. It was a scarlet colour, with a teardrop-shaped stone in the center. "Girl. I love it."
The four sat down and talked about the big day on Saturday.
"Girl! I am so coming over early to do your hair and makeup!" ~Ayla
"Dude! I'm so making a playlist for the day!" ~ Nino
"Think you can set up a way to film the day?" ~Mari
"Wanna come over early and help us decorate?" ~Adrien.
As the conversation come to a close, "Alya wanna come to see my dress? It's the one project I kept a secret from Adrien." Mari giggled.
"Girl you know it!" The boys watched the girls go upstairs.
"So Adrien my man, ya gonna book a hotel room for the wedding night?" Nino teased.
"Oh!" Adrien blushed. "I hadn't thought about that. We'd need a fake name. And I guess I should see if Mari wants even that..."
"What do you mean dude? She'd be your wife! You're suppose to sleep with your wife! Why would she not?" Nino couldn't put it together.
"Nino, this wedding isn't out of a desire to get married, we'd wait if things weren't so bad with my Father. So we may not change anything around here until we get a new place. " Adrien looked down.
"Adrien, you love her, she loves you. I can't see you two waiting." Nino put a hand on his shoulder.
"I know. But I won't force her. But getting a hotel room is a good idea so you all can clean our house up for us." He shoved Nino.
Upstair Mari slipped on her simple white halter top dress it went to her ankle. "Oh Mari, it's lovely. I love the golden embroidery on the skirt." Alya was amazed.
"I also made this belt to add some sparkle and to break up the white," Mari added the glittery belt.
"Girl it's perfect, for a living room wedding. So tell me what do you got planned for the night?" Alya teased.
"What do you mean?" Mari was confused.
"Girl it's your wedding night. You need so something pretty to sit on the floor." Alya laughed.
"Ayla!" Mari blushed deeply. "We haven't talked about that yet. This wedding is really for convenience."
"You're telling me, once that man is your husband you don't want to sleep with him?" Ayla placed her hands on her hips.
"I... I... don't know..." Mari really hadn't thought about that. She'd been so focused on school. "Ayla, I'm not even on a pill or anything. And I'm not gonna have time to see one this week. I'm busy with finals!"
"Girl leave that to Adrien. After this weekend go to the doctor and get on the pill or get an IUD and call it a day, or pay $80 bucks and get an app for the natural way." Ayla laughed, "It's not that hard."
"That App is people the best choice, then I don't have to worry about the press getting wind of my doctor trips."
"Alright well let's sign you up and then after your last final we are gonna get you a disguise and we are finding you a cute little outfit for your wedding night." Alya winked at her.
"Girl, I work for the Agreste Brand. We can just go to the warehouse."
"He sells that stuff?! I didn't know that." Ayla was shocked.
"It's a partnership deal. Not overly public. We simply help manufacture it. A few of the more bold designers worked on the project, but all the advertising happens with the Peek-Boo brand. It's a company run and owned by women and Mr. Agrest wanted to help them get started, so he offered some of his female designers and then offered to help make some of it." Mari shrugged.
"Well alright. You set it up and we will do it." Alya smiled.
"Fine." Mari knew she needed to tell Nathalie. "Enough about me, What about you and Nino. You still planning to finish school or?"
"Well Nino has had a DJ gig this summer on the radio, and I've been working with Nadjia. So if they offer us after summer employment we night move on with our lives. Get married, buy a house. You know things like that. This summer was strange with you two in school and with us working, I guess this is what adulting is eh?"
"Well, we are turning 20 this year. So we'd be young newlyweds, but eh getting married is a good way to spend our 20's."
"Your right, if Nino and I are done school, I don't see what we wouldn't get married, after all, we'd be living together if it wasn't cheaper to live with our parents."
"Well, the four of us could get married on the same weekend since Adrien and I's is more of a publicity stunt." Mari joked.
"Eh! That could actually be fun! Like Nino and I on Friday, and you two on Sunday, gives a day for decor changes and jazz." Alya smiled.
"Would you want to wait to have your honeymoon?"
"Girl Nino and I are entertainment students, we broke. we won't be doing anything crazy." Ayla laughed. "We aren't some rich kids."
"Well, I bet Adrien and I would help you with that as a gift. Or we could go together. You know the same place. Different rooms, or different hotels. It could be a tradition for us."
"We will need to see if Nino gets the idea. Before you to publicly tie the knot."
"I guess so." Mari shrugged. "Well, it's getting late. Adrien and I have finals tomorrow so he and I should head to bed."
Alya laughed. "You two are so old." But ya Nino and I have work too so we should also get going."
The girls headed downstairs and everyone said goodbye. And Adrien and Mari sat down on the couch. "So should I get a hotel room for Saturday night?" Adrien looked at her unsure what to feel.
"Sure. One bed should be enough. I think... If you're okay with that?" Mari looked at him.
"Sure. Should I pick up protection?" This felt so awkward. Shouldn't it just be natural and be an understanding. Didn't they both want this?
"Do you want to?" Mari turned and faced him head-on.
"I do. I just don't want to make you." Adrien took her hand. "I mean we didn't want to get married yet..."
"Adrien, I love you, and you will be my husband. And I want to enjoy being married to you." She leaned over and kissed his cheek, "I'll see you in the morning."
Adrien watched her walk up the stairs. He loved her. And he couldn't wait for the weekend.
