Chapter Three
Unknown P.O.V
I watched silently as the boy picked up the girl and started walking away. I followed them. I was as silent as a shadow. I made no sound as I picked my way through the woods. It was easy to follow the boy. He made so much noise as he walked.
I walked almost next to him, as I looked at the girl in his arms. Yes, I thought with approval, She must be the one. The boy must have sensed my presence because he looked directly at me. Luckily, I was hidden in the shadows so he couldn't see me. I almost laughed when I felt his uncertainty and fright.
He resumed his journey but at a faster pace, and again I followed him. They came to a clearing with a bunch of little house. I muttered a spell and felt the girl stir in fright. I laughed and moved back into the shadows of the woods.
Elsa's P.O.V
I was in a cold dark room that smelled like hate. The stench was so powerful it stung my eyes making them tear up. I tried getting up, but some kind of force was holding me to the ground. I was in chains, bound hand to feet. I struggled but I cried out when the chains started burning my skin.
"Poor Elsa," A cold voice said in amusement. "How is she going to save the people so loves if she can't save herself?" That voice was so familiar but yet so distant.
Then the scenery changed. I was in the middle of Arendelle's town square. Everything was burning, women were screaming, children crying. I watched as shadows barged into the houses and drug out people. Each of them getting slaughtered.
"Elsa!" Papa's voice yelled. I turned to see Mother and Father running towards me with Anna in their arms. "Come here!"
"Papa!" I yelled, I ran towards them but I as I ran they were getting further and further away.
I watched in horror as a dark figure approached them and with a swipe of his hand, they dissolved in thin air. "Elsa!" Anna's shrill voice screamed.
"Anna!" I yelled. I sighed with relief when I realized it was all a dream. I groaned as I sat up and looked around. I was not in my room at the castle as I expected. Instead, I was in a small bedroom. I stared around in confusion, wondering how I got there. Then I started remembering what had happened.
Tentatively, I got up and moved to the window, opened the curtains, and looked out. The sunlight was blinding it took a few seconds to actually look outside without squinting.
There a little girl out in the garden with an older woman, about my mother's age. They were picking carrots. I smiled when the little girl looked up and waved at me. I waved back.
I placed my hand over the window and jumped back when it turned into frost. I gasped and started looking for my gloves. I looked everywhere but they weren't in that small room.
"Good morning, sunshine," A voice said.
I glanced up and saw the boy that saved me in the woods. I put my hands behind my back and nodded. "Good morning."
"Mom should be coming soon so you can get washed up," He said sounding bored. I nodded again and stared at the floor. We stood there in silence I could feel his eyes looking me over. "So you're a princess?" He asked.
"Yes," I said.
"Well in that case," He bowed so low his nose almost touched the floor. "Your majesty. My name is Jack. He looked so ridiculous that I giggled.
"Jack! Jack! Let's go and play!" The little girl's' voice said. Her head popped into the doorway. She had brown hair and brown eyes like her brother. She looks about the same age as Anna, I thought sadly.
She looked over to me and her eyes widened. After a moment of looking me over, she blurted, "Is it true you can shoot ice out of your hands?" I was taken back at her question. How did she know?
"Sorry, this is my sister, Emma," Jack said, laughing as he messed up her hair. "She likes to ask a lot of questions." He picked her up and threw her in the air.
"Jack, Emma, leave Princess Elsa alone," A woman's stern voice said. The woman that I saw outside came in, giving her two children an annoyed but caring look. She shooed the Jack and Emma out the door. "I'm sorry, your majesty. Jack and Emma are just curious."
I straightened my posture. "It's okay, Mrs-. . ."
"Overland. Mrs. Overland."
"Overland." I liked her right away. She reminded me of my grandma. Caring, and gentle. Unlike my mother, who was distant and always busy.
She helped me out of my dirty dress and she undid my hair that was up in a braid. She dressed me in a big ugly brown dress that I guessed was Mrs. Overlands. "I'm sorry this is the best we have," She apologized.
"Um, do you have my gloves?" I asked.
Mrs. Overland nodded. She left the room then came back with a box and took my pair of blue gloves. "I believe these are yours?"
"Yes! Thank you," I said quickly snatching them away from her. "I need to get home. Can you help me?"
"Oh yes, but my father wants to talk to you before you do. If that's okay, your majesty."
"Oh," I mumbled. "Where is he?"
Mrs. Overland smiled. "He's with my husband hunting. He'll be back in a few hours. You're welcome to hang out with Jack and Emma while you're waiting."
I nodded and slipped into my shoes. I cringed at how dirty they were. Anita is gonna kill me, I thought. I'm pretty sure she'll kill me either way. I hoped Anita wasn't too worried about me.
It was warm out, very warm. I wandered past the garden and towards the sound of Emma's squeals of delight. "Jack, do that again!"
It didn't take long to navigate them. Jack was climbing up a tree, and Emma watched expectantly at him. I gasped as he jumped from the trunk onto a branch. Emma giggled and started clapping. He swung his legs onto the branch and let go. I waited for him to fall but the branch held up and he started swinging by his legs. "Hello, princess," He called.
"Hello, Jack," I said in an amused voice. He held onto the branch and swung his legs down and let go, landing in front of me with a graceful landing.
"Watcha doing?" He asked. I noticed he had little freckles covering his nose and cheeks.
"I have to hang out with you and Emma until Mrs. Overland's father gets back."
Jack nodded. "You sound like it's a bad thing. We aren't that borning."
"Are you sure," I asked, raising one of my eyebrows at him. "I don't think you're telling the truth."
"I'll prove it to ya," He said. "Just follow me."
Emma grabbed my arm and I instinctively jerked back. She gave me a disappointed look but it disappeared when Jack started marching up the hill. She ran after him laughing. I followed them deeper into the forest. Unlike the other part of the forest I was in last night it was sunny and inviting. I didn't find anything evil or mysterious about it.
We were walking for some time when Jack suddenly stopped and said "Ah ha!" We were at a large lake. He looked at me and winked.
He slapped his forehead. "Oh no! I forgot something. Emma, I need my fishing pole, can you get it for me?"
"Okay!" She exclaimed and she ran back the way we came.
Jack waited for Emma to be out of sight, then he turned to me. "We don't have much time. Let's go!" He started running away.
"Wait!" I yelled, hiking up my dress and running after him. "What about Emma?"
"She can find her way back home. Let's have some fun!" He said back, looking at me from over his shoulder. I felt a little guilty for leaving behind Emma but I soon forgot about her.
We ran until we hit a rock wall. Like it was nothing, Jack started ascending up it. It's a good thing Mother or Father isn't here, I thought. Not wanting to seem weak, I also started to clamber up it.
I wasn't halfway up by the time Jack had reached the top. Jack looked down and laughed at me. "Slowpoke!"
"I'm not used to this!" I said as a lame excuse.
I was sweating and panting, and it felt like my limbs were on fire when I reached the top. I laid on the ground, groaning. Tomorrow I was really going to be sore.
"Are you tired yet?" Jack asked, standing over me with an obnoxious smirk.
I glared at him. "You know I could imprison you forever. You know that, right?"
"Yeah, but what fun is that?" He had a point.
"Well, I refused to run or climb anything else," I said stubbornly.
"Ugh, fine. You're so lame."
I shrugged. "Yes. I. Am," I said with fake pride.
He sat down beside me. Silence. He started fidgeting with his pants. "Do you want to play a game?" He asked suddenly.
I looked at him suspiciously. "What kind of 'game'?"
"I call it: Questions."
"Did you just make it up?" I asked trying not to laugh.
"Maybe," He said slowly.
"Do you have to get up during this game?"
"No."
"Fine, I'll play." I sighed. "How do you play it?"
"Okay, first you think of a question to ask me. Then- whoever goes first- asks the question they are thinking. You both have to answer it."
"Okay," I said slowly. I looked at Jack closely. What did I want to ask him? He also looked at me. I was captivated by his light brown eyes.
"How old are you?" He asked, breaking into my thoughts. "I'm sixteen."
"Fifteen," I responded. "Um, how many siblings do you have?"
"I had two, but now I just have one." He looked kind of sad as he said this.
"I have one," I said, thinking of Anna. "But I never see her."
"Why?" Jack asked.
"Is that another question," I joked.
Jack shrugged. "If you want it to be."
I looked straight into his eyes. I took off my gloves and started to rotate my hands, making a tiny snowball. "When I was eight, I was playing with Anna and I accidentally hit her with my powers. She almost died. Now she had no idea I have powers and I have to hide into my room so I don't hurt her again." I tears welled in my eyes. I blinked them away. I stop my hands, and the snowball fell to the ground and started to melt in the heat.
"Can you keep a secret?" Jack was looking at me with a serious face.
"I guess so," I said.
He took a deep breath, "I killed my older sister."
"Oh?"
"We were having a competition to see how high we could climb. I wanted to win, because she always won," His eyes glazed over and he smiled. "So I cheated and stepped on her fingers. She lost her grip and fell... to her death." His face fell.
"What was her name?"
"Bente."
I sat quietly trying to take it all in. Compared to my story, his was ten times worse. "I'm sorry," I said at last.
Jack just shrugged. "I got over it."
I wanted to ask him how he got over it, but I stopped myself. No need to reopen sore wounds. I tucked a loose hair behind my ear. "We'd better head back."
"Yeah," Jack said. He helped me climb down the rock. We walked in silence.
"Why me? Why did you choose me to tell that?" I asked before we got to his house.
He smiled at me. "Because I trust you."
I trust you. . .
