Chapter 23

A/N: This chapter makes my heart break. Just a sad song to make it worse. I suggest listening to it towards the end of the chapter..... >:)

Annabeth

Useless. That's all I feel. I couldn't help Percy. I couldn't take the pain away. I couldn't save him from the bite. I can't save him from the poison spreading to his heart. The rest of the seven visited occasionally, but had to go back to help others. It's been a day since the battle. Campers are packing and helping the wounded get back to Camp. But Percy isn't ready to get up. We are trying our best to help the healing, but it's getting worse. The poison is spreading, and coughs of blood is becoming more continuous. All I could do was sit next to Percy, holding his hand. I was useless, and that's what I hated.

"What's going on in your mind, Wise Girl?" Percy squeezed my hand to reassure me he was there.

"Nothing," I mumbled. I stared out to the machines, and tried not to look into Percy's eyes.

"Annabeth, I know you don't like feeling useless. I know you too well to know what you are thinking. But it isn't your fault. Don't blame yourself. Please," Percy placed his hand on my cheek and made me look at him in the eyes.

"I know, but I'm just..." Tears swelled in my eyes, while Percy wiped the tears away.

"Hey, it's okay. I'll be okay. Before you know it, we'll be at New Rome." Percy smiled.

After the Giant war, Percy and I decided to stay at camp for one more year before going to New Rome. We would have college together, then soon become a family. But now I was terrified that none of those things would happen. Percy started coughing out blood, and I quickly got ambrosia. I made Percy swallow it down, but the coughs didn't stop. I went to go get some water, praying to Poseidon that it will work. I grabbed a cup and filled it with water, then ran to Percy's side. I made him drink down the water, and the coughs stopped.

"Thank the gods," I muttered. But when Percy was swallowing down the cup, I noticed green veins popping out of his skin, on his throat. It was a trail, leading from his throat and down. My hands were trembling.

"Percy.." I cried out, and Percy put down the cup.

"Yea?" He asked. He was looking at me worriedly, then placed his head back onto a pillow.

"Percy can you flip over so you're on your back? I'll place pillows so that your back won't hurt too much." I asked, but Percy didn't listen.

"What for?" He asked.

"Just to check..." Now I was suspicious.

"Fine." He grumbled and gently flipped himself over. He had no shirt on, so he grabbed another pillow to cover his chest. He was hiding something.

"Percy." I raised an eyebrow.

"Annabeth, there's nothing." Percy glanced towards the door, while Will came into the room. He was looking at Percy weirdly.

"Why are you on your back? That won't help your back heal." Will quickly grabbed the pillows away from Percy's chest.

"No!" Percy face palmed while Will and I gasped.

There were green veins bulging from his skin, and trails of them lead to his heart. The ones from his throat lead down to a centimeter away from his heart.  There were other trails leading from his sides, also heading towards his heart.

"Percy!" I chocked back a sob, terrified from the gruesome view in front of me.

"Look, I didn't want to worry you and," Percy looked at his chest, "I didn't think it would get worse."

"Percy! You should have told us! Oh my gods!" Will rushed out of the room and called for Apollo.

They both came back, rushing into the room. Apollo's eyes widened when he saw Percy's chest.

"Oh no no no no," Apollo was running everywhere, looking at his machines and gave more shots into Percy.

"Annabeth, we need you to leave." Will helped me out.

"No! I want to stay with Percy!" My eyes watered and I held Percy's hand.

"Annabeth, go. I'll be here when your back." Percy reassured and let go of my hand.

Will lead me out of the room to the room across from Percy.

"Get some rest." Will left the room and back into Percy's.

What will happen? I need Percy. I can't live without him. I can't go to sleep, especially if Percy is on the verge of dying. I needed someone to talk to. I can't stand being alone. I walked out of the room and walked out of the apartment. Thalia was with the hunters, departure soon. She would be too busy. The rest of the seven are helping campers get back to camp. Grover was with the nature spirits, helping with the wounded. But then I spotted Clarisse. She was sitting on the sidewalk, sharpening her spear. Should I really talk to an Ares kid about Percy? Would she understand how I feel? Of course she would. She lost Silena. I quietly walked towards Clarisse and she looked up, cocking an eyebrow.

"I want to talk," I sighed.

"Follow me." Clarisse immediately got up and lead us down the sidewalk. I was wondering where she was taking us, and when I found out it was the route to Percy's house, I almost bursted into tears. When we reached his apartment door, I tried my best not to cry. Sally and Paul were gone. Percy would soon be gone too.

Don't think like that, I told my brain.

Clarisse busted open the door and lead us into Percy's room. His scent was strong, and I relaxed onto his bed. I remembered when we fought a couple of cyclops with Grover, when we were trying to figure out what Sally witnessed. I couldn't hold it any more. I bursted into tears, while I hugged my knees and put my head down onto Percy's bed. Clarisse sat beside me, actually hugging me. You heard me, I said hugging. Clarisse let me cry into her shoulder, letting me release the tears.

"Annabeth, you can tell me anything. I'm not the heartless monster people think I am. Yea, I can be tough, but remember Silena? She was love sick for Beckendorf, (A/N: Rest in peace Beckendorf. I will always remember you. A moment of silence for the loss of Beckendorf please. Did I spell his name wrong? Hopefully I didn't. Someone check please.. ) and since I was there for her, I can be there for you." Clarisse sighed.

I stopped crying and looked into Clarisse's sympathetic look. I hugged her tightly. She hugged back, saying soothing things to me. She knows how I feel. She understands the love for Percy I have. She can be a caring person in the inside. Sometimes. After a few minutes of conversation, I was sitting criss-crossed on Percy's bed, with tissues littered everywhere.  But then the peace ended when Wills face showed up in the air.

"Will?" I asked, looking at his expression. He was worried and kept glancing to his side. I hear Apollo screaming.

"Cmon Percy! Don't lose hope!" I hear Apollo yell in the background.

"Come here, quick." Will's face dissapeared, and I quickly sprinted out of the house.

I knew I shouldn't have left him! Something would always happen, and it ends up badly. I was sprinting down the sidewalk, with Clarisse right behind me. When the abandoned apartment came into view, I slammed open the door.

The heart rater machine was beside Percy, still beeping. But Percy didn't look very good. He was paler than before, and the veins were getting worse. Now all of them connected to his heart. He was turning paler and paler by the minute. That's it. The poison reached his heart.

"Percy! Oh gods, please Percy!" I cried while I stood next to him, clutching his hand desperately.

"Damn it Jackson!" Clarisse slammed her fist on the table.

Percy looked at me once more, and I heard him mumbling one word.

"Sorry,"

"No, no no no no!!" I screamed. That's all I could do. Scream.

The heart monitor started getting slow.

Beep.

Beep.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.
