Chapter 20

(A/N: Something that stresses me in this chapter: It's so hard to make Percy die. Considering that Percy can so easily get healed by water! SO FRUSTRATING!)

Annabeth

This couldn't be happening. Percy has to live. He can't just slip away so easily!

"The poison is spreading Will, and it's spreading fast. The only thing we can do is make it slow down. But eventually, it won't work anymore." I heard Andrew whisper to Will.

After Echidna was smothered into earth, which was weird considering that she was earth, all the monsters evaporated into thin air. All of our troops gathered around the ally ways. Apollo campers are scattered everywhere trying their best to heal the wounded. I sat in the corner holding Percy's hand. My eyes were blood-shot red from crying too much. I just sat there, running my hand through his silky black hair. Will came over and sat on the other side of Percy. He looked at me sincerely.

"Annabeth, we are trying our best. All we can do is pray to the gods." Will sighed. Andrew came over and handed him some ambrosia. Will opened Percy's mouth and forced Percy to swallow.

"Will, when do you think he will wake up?" A tear fell off of my face while I looked up at Will.

"We don't know Annabeth," Will frowned.

I looked down at Percy, trying to come up with something. Wait a second. How could we be so stupid?

"Water!" I shouted. Water could do anything. Water was Percy's element! How did I not think of this?

"Where would we get the water from?" Will tapped his finger on his chin. I stared at him, dumbfounded.

"The river. Use your brain Will." I rolled my eyes at him.

"Oh. Right. Who's going to get a bucket of water from the river?" Will asked.

"I would, but I don't know if I can leave Percy's side..." I looked worriedly at the sleeping Perseus.

"I can take care of him. Don't worry Annabeth, you can trust me." Will winked at me. I smiled and kissed Percy's cheek.

"I'll be back, I promise." I whispered into Percy's ear. I got up taking one last look at Percy and walked away. I knew the only thing that could take me fast enough was my old friend. I whistled. The black figure came flying towards me.

"Alright Blackjack. I need to help Percy. We have to go to the river and get some water." I petted his muzzle. Blackjack neighed and bent down. I climbed onto his back and Blackjack flew away. The wind in my hair felt amazing. But I was on a mission. To save Percy. When the river was in view, Blackjack flew straight down.

Once we landed, I jumped off of Blackjack's back. We were on the beach with abandoned picnic baskets and buckets for making sand castles. I quickly picked up a few of the sand castle buckets and emptied them. I walked towards the water and began to fill it up. Once all four buckets were filled, (never can be sure how much you need) and jumped back onto Blackjack. I tried my best to hold the buckets steadily while Blackjack was soaring in the sky.

When Blackjack peacefully landed, I walked with four heavy buckets in my hands. Will showed by my side and helped me bring the buckets to Percy. I put down the buckets next to Percy.

"Alright. Turn Percy around so he is on his stomach. We'll spray it all over his back." I commanded. Will took off Percy's shirt, which I found a bit disturbing, and flipped him over. I grabbed the first bucket and bit my lip. What if it doesn't work? I had to hope. I dumped all of the water onto Percy. But nothing happened.

"Well, did it work?.." I asked. It should have worked. Why wasn't it working??!? I heard a whimper escape from Percy's lip. I bent down and flipped Percy over. I gently placed his head onto my lap.

"Why didn't it work Will?" I cried. I was surprised. The water always worked!

"I don't know Annabeth..." Will was also concerned.

"We need to get him a more comfortable place for him to lay on. His back will get worse." I pushed the black strands of hair out of Percy's face.

"Alright. He's heavy, but I guess we could move him into an apartment close by." Will called over some random campers that were helping the Apollo kids.

They helped pick Percy up and lead into an abandoned apartment. We walked into a random room. We saw the living room and placed Percy on the couch gently. I thanked them and they walked out. I placed my hands on his cheek with tears running down my face. I tried. I took more ambrosia that was left in my pocket and quickly fed it to him. I knew he could burn up, but it was worth trying to help him. When Percy's eyes began to fluttered open, my heart skipped a beat.

"Seaweed Brain!" I cried. I pulled him into a hug and cried into his shoulder. He looked stunned and gently hugged me back.

"Hey wise girl," Percy chuckled. He then winced and laid back down. My smile faded and placed my hand on his cheek.

"I-it's f-fine A-Anna-Annabeth." Percy struggled to make the words come out of his mouth.

"No, it's not fine." Tears were still streaming down. Percy placed his hand on my cheek and wiped away the tears. He smiled faintly then winced. His eyes showed agony and pain. His hand dropped next to him.

"Seaweed brain, please just stick with me." I cried.

"I-I ca-can't Annabeth. It hu-hurts." A tear came down from Percy's sea green eyes. I hated being useless. It was the worst thing anyone could ever feel.

"Stay strong, Percy." I ran my hand through his hair. He's a hero. He fought three wars but always ends up getting hurt. I was the luckiest person in the world.

Percy's eyelids started to get heavy. "No! Percy, please!" I cried and cried. This couldn't be happening. I was dreaming. I held Percy close and prayed to the gods. Percy stared into my eyes.

"Annabeth, I'm sorry."

"No! You are not dying on me, Percy Achilles Jackson! We still have a future ahead of us! You were going to be an amazing father. We would have little children with your beautiful eyes." I cried.

"I love you more than anything Annabeth Marie Chase." Percy's eyes was starting to lose color.

"I love you too, so please don't die on me!" I hugged him close. Percy looked at me and kissed me for the last time. I kissed back, hoping that it would save his life. But of course, life is a bitch. Percy started falling back.

"No! Please, Percy. Please, please, please, please!" I kept screaming trying to wake Percy up. He had on his lop sided grin, while his eyes came to a close.

"NOOOOOOO!" I screamed.

"PERCYYYY!!!!" I sobbed like there was no tomorrow. A part of me left. My only lover was gone. The only person I really cared for and he cared for me.

Will came rushing in and spotted me hugging Percy. He bent down on his knees. A familiar man was rushing in behind him with a kit. He ran beside me and looked at Percy.

"Wait! There's time to save him! Now get out, I need to work!" Apollo ushered me out. I screamed and kicked at him to let me go, but he didn't. Will dragged me out and took me out of the apartment room.

There was a severe tension in the air. Will Percy make it?
