Chapter 16: The Life or Death Questionnaire
The angry man yelling outside of my room was Cubs. The man Cubs was yelling at, I'm not sure who that was. I doubt I'd find out. The nicer man tried talking to Cubs but he interrupted. "We need answers and we need them now. I will not guarantee I won't kill them, but I will not purposely kill them."
The other man sighed and agreed. "Fine, but remember we warned you and if Storm isn't satisfied, then his wrath will come for you. Not us." I heard footsteps and practically felt Cubs' victory smile. The doorknob turned and I closed my eyes.
I didn't know what answers he needed from me, but I knew he was willing to kill for them. I would have to give him some answers, but I could be vague like earlier. That worked out okay, meaning he didn't torture me. It occurred to me that I should probably be "asleep" when he comes in.
I heard a click and something cold against my forehead. "Wake up!" Cubs demanded. I would've ignored him but I was afraid of what was touching my head. As soon as I opened my eyes I knew what it was. I smelled gunpowder.
Sure enough there was a box of ammunition sitting on a stool next to Cubs, just out of my reach. Along with the cold metal on my head, I had enough evidence surrounding me to know that Cubs wanted me to know it was a gun.
I stiffened like I thought he'd actually kill me. Of course he wouldn't though. I heard him basically tell the other guy he wouldn't kill me. If Cubs did kill me, that would make Storm mad. And trust me, you do not want to make Storm mad. I learned that the hard way.
Cubs laughed but kept the gun steady. "Would you like to die today?" Wow. Not only did he have a gun on me that he couldn't use, now he was flaunting it. I took a deep breath like I was scared, but really I was getting myself together before I accidentally blurted something out.
"No." I said in a monotone voice. Cubs would assume I was trying to be brave. "Then you will answer my questions." I didn't say anything so he put the gun on the table facing me. Cubs walked around the room and started asking questions.
"When did you know you had telepathy?" I vaguely said, "Eleven." Cubs walked up into my face and said angrily, "Eleven what?" I pretended to be scared and said quickly, "When I was eleven years old." Cubs looked satisfied and continued his pacing.
"How did you know?" Cubs asked me. This time I didn't fake my expressions or remain impassive. Hurt and fright flashed through my eyes, thinking back to that day. Cubs didn't even notice. He did notice that I didn't answer though. "Answer me!" Cubs leaned down to most likely smack me, but he suddenly stopped.
I shrunk back and tried not to think about that day. It was really traumatic for an eleven year old. I guess Cubs noticed, and I could almost see sympathy in his eyes. But it was gone so fast I couldn't say for sure. Cubs suddenly said in a harsh tone, "Do you even remember?" If Cubs did have sympathy, he buried it way down deep.
I couldn't hold back the images anymore. Lucy and I were tired on our walk home, and we didn't expect an attack. First it was Snake, then Robin and Storm. I couldn't recall Snake and Robin having red eyes, but Storm did. He was so close to kidnapping me...so close to killing me...
I was pulled, or more precisely shook, out of my flashback. My glazed over eyes came back into focus, and I saw Cubs was shaking me. My silver chains were rattling and scraping against my skin. Cubs let go of me. I think he knew what had happened, but he didn't say anything other than, "Tell me what happened."
Cubs didn't say it in a gentle voice, but he wasn't all that harsh either. I did not want to relive those memories any more, so I was vague again. "It was my first vampire attack. I fought back, I won." Cubs looked very displeased with my answer. "Was Storm there?"
I simply answered, "Yes." Cubs stood there for a minute thinking up his next question. I'm pretty sure he'd be more specific this time. "How did you defeat Storm?" I sighed and would've rubbed my face if my hands were free. "I didn't defeat him, just subdued." I knew he would ask so I said, "I used telepathy."
Cubs smiled. "But you were only eleven years old. You couldn't have done it on your own." I stiffened immediately. I hadn't left out my sister Lucy for selfish reasons. I didn't try to take credit for escaping Storm. If I said something about Lucy they would hunt her down like they did to me. I couldn't let them. She definitely wasn't a vampire who could protect herself physically like me.
Cubs knew I wouldn't answer because it wasn't a direct question. "Storm has told us all about what happened, so just tell me now. Who was with you?" I struggled for a believable story. "I was with someone." I tried to stall. "Who?" I couldn't think of any way around this.
"My sister." Cubs was looking into Ash's room. "Ah yes, Lucile. Storm told us about her small telepathic abilities. They aren't as strong as yours. That's why we went after you first." He said first. Which meant Lucy was next. Lucy hasn't trained all her life like I have. She couldn't handle what I'm going through.
It finally clicked in my head. "Why would you want her? She doesn't have telepathic abilities." Cubs looked amused. "Is that so?" I tried to look as confused as I could throughout the questionnaire, like I thought he knew Lucy isn't telepathic.
"Yep." Cubs bent and leaned in so he was only a breath away from me. "Explain." Cubs demanded. "Based on what you just said, Storm only thinks my sister has telepathy." Cubs gave me a look that said he really didn't believe me. I had to make him believe to save Lucile.
