Chapter 3: Causing a Commotion

My whole body hurt. I felt like throwing up. I tried to get up but there was something on my stomach preventing me from sitting up. I slowly opened my eyes and found it easier than trying to move. When I looked around I vaguely remembered a girl flying into me.

Her head was lying on my stomach so I gently pushed it off. I brushed glass off the seat carefully. I put her upright so she wouldn't fall off the seat. Then I listened for the strange man I saw before passing out. I'm pretty sure he was talking to himself.

"Well, well! What do we have here? Looks like you're all unconscious. Hmm....I better not waste this opportunity. I'm very sorry for this, but you are going to be my next meal."

That's when I finally figured it out. I knew that weird feel the air had. It was the warning my senses gave off when something not human that could hurt me was around. This time though, because of this person's own arrogance, I knew he was a vampire. I ignored the vampire for a moment, tilting my head to see the girl next to me. Her chest finally moved, so she was still breathing.

I surveyed myself and found scratches from glass on my arms along with some bruises. I couldn't see the bruises yet but I could feel them. Not too bad for being in a car crash. Or rather, a bus crash. The glass cuts stung and the bruises would hurt later, but I could live with it. I wondered what exactly caused the wreck.

I looked out the window, making sure my head didn't peak over the seat. I didn't want the vampire to see that I was awake. My eyes searched quickly, trying to find the source of our crash. It probably had something to do with the vamp on board. It was definitely, at least partly, because of the tree a few feet away from the bus. It was tipped, but hadn't fallen over yet. It must've still had some roots in the ground.

I peeked around my seat to get a look at the vampire. His back was turned to me, so he couldn't see me. But that meant I couldn't see him either. All I could tell was he had black clothes on that matched his hair, which came down to the top of his neck. I could also see that he was most likely taller than me. His voice was cruel and teasing, something I absolutely hated. I had to make him stop talking. And maybe stop him from breathing too. He was most likely going to hurt everyone if I didn't stop him.

Meanwhile, the vamp was still talking to himself. "Well...most of you will be. It takes more than one person to satisfy me, since I'm not that old. You know what they say, young minds need more food! Plus I feel like playing today." A chill ran down my back as he said that. He paused to look at the faces of the kids that were still passed out.

I took the opportunity to yell at Lucy, in her mind of course. "Lucy, I demand you wake up this instance!" I stopped for a second and heard the vampire was walking slowly past all the kids, observing each one to see who he'll kill first, most likely. I needed to hurry so I could help those kids get away. But how? Lucy and Jake were a few seats up, across the aisle from me. I shifted to see them better.

I felt Lucy start to awake, so I hurriedly talked again. "There is a stranger on the bus, so be quiet." She finally woke up and said okay. I saw Lucy poke at Jake to wake him. She put a finger to her lips, telling him to be quiet. The vampire was near them when Jake tried to shift into a sitting position slowly. The jacket he had wadded up on his lap fell to the floor, the zipper making a clanking noise on the floor. I was surprised the vampire hadn't heard me move the girl earlier.

The sound hadn't been very loud, but the vampire heard it with his unnatural hearing abilities. "Someone's awake?" He mumbled, and in the blink of a human eye he was beside Jake, looking down at him. In my mind I said, "Lucy that guy's a vampire! You and Jake can't take him, but I can. Don't try to fight him yet! I'll help you guys."

I knew if I peeked around my seat again the vampire would see, so I did the only thing I could think to get him away from my big brother and little sister. I shouted in my mind and everybody else's but the vampire, Lucy and Jake, and said, "Alright everyone, rise and shine! It's time to fight."

They probably won't notice anything out of the ordinary because they were sleeping. They'll probably think that it was a dream where someone yelled at them. They won't suspect someone else's voice is in their minds.

I have been practicing loud and powerful commands like that, so after one second everyone woke up. For a second they were confused, but then I saw Moose stand up defensively. He looked right at the vampire, catching his attention just like I wanted. I was glad we had Moose with us to help distract the vamp. But I also felt bad for making him the bait.

"Hey!" Moose yelled. The vampire turned his dark blue eyes towards Moose. Blue eyes? That was weird. The last time I saw, which was when I was eleven, vampires had red eyes. This guys' eyes were so dark, they were almost black. Lucy was probably thinking the same thing, but I told her, "Don't think about that, let's just get him away from everyone."

Moose was starting to talk again. "Who are you?" The vampire walked over in Moose's face and said with a monotone voice, "Your worst nightmare." If he said that to anyone else with muscles like Moose, they would've laughed. Moose wasn't the laughing type, so he skipped it and went right to punching vamp guy in the face.

Chaos broke out and everyone panicked when the vampire grabbed Moose by the neck before he could shake his already swollen knuckles. The vampire pushed Moose up against the wall. That brought back painful memories for me. Storm pushing me against the wall, so high up for a little kid I thought I'd die if I fell. My spine aching from the wall... But I was eleven years old then, so I think I can handle myself now.

I shook my head and stood up, shaking off the memories. That was a long time ago. I was vulnerable and helpless, but now I'm not. I moved carefully but quickly around the now awake girl that sat beside me. The vampire didn't notice my approach because of the chaos until it was too late. I love surprise attacks. I hadn't gotten to do one in a while. The vampire was talking to Moose with a smirk on his face.

"I'm going to rip your throat out and spit it in your face, making you wish you were dead so you couldn't feel..." I interrupted his death speech that he probably practiced for hours and jumped on his back. I couldn't have punched or kicked him because that would've pushed him into Moose. I managed to hook my legs around the vamp's stomach and my arms around his neck, forcing him to let go of Moose.

The vampire was surprised that I had attacked him, and that I had such a strong grip, but he recovered easily and tried to throw me off. Again, this reminded me of the day I met Storm. It only took me a second to come back to reality, but it was long enough that the vampire threw me off his back and across the bus.

I landed hard on my already bruised back in the aisle of the bus. The breath rushed out of my chest quickly, making it hard to breathe. I blinked and tried to sit up, taking deep breaths, but the vampire was already in front of me. He reached for my arms to most likely pull me up, but I never gave him the chance. I kicked my right foot in between his legs.

I fought dirty, but I was good at it. I kicked him with my left leg in his ankle so he tripped backwards. This vampire is pretty strong but he hasn't fed recently enough so I could take him down by myself. Just give me a few minutes. If I could out smart three vampires when I was eleven, I could take care of one today. At least I hoped I could.

Ignoring the pain in my back, I jumped up with almost inhuman speed and kicked him in the stomach. He was surprised by my speed and stumbled again, so I punched him in the face. I yelled and cradled my throbbing hand. It really hurts to punch a vampire! I hadn't been in a fight with a vamp for a long time, so I was learning new things every second this fight went on.

"Alicia! Watch out!" I heard Lucy yell right before the vampire hauled me up and threw me to the other side of the bus. As I went flying back he smirked. This guy is cocky. But my descent had turned slow mo. I could survive this. I used my reflexes to grab at the seats, trying to slow down my fall. It was kind of hard though since I was flying straight toward the emergency door.

If I didn't slow down, I would hit that door and break my spine. Which would kill even me. It would be a terribly painful death. I couldn't let Lucy and Jake see me go down like that. I would keep being smarter than my enemy. I yelled in my head, " Someone stop me!" And the people I should've flown past grabbed my arms, slowing me down.

It almost ripped my shoulders out of place, but the people let go and Moose caught me. I looked up and Lucy was staring intently at Moose, controlling him through his mind. I couldn't believe how lucky I was to have such an awesome little sister. I had trained her myself, and she always made me proud. I sent a quick, grateful thanks to Lucy in her mind and stood up to face the vampire again.

I could feel Jake staring with disbelief at my predicament. I hadn't told him about vampires, and I probably never would. It was safer that way. I just hoped I could buy some time for everyone to escape. I wondered if Jake's expression had any worry in it. I couldn't tell anymore if he still cared for me. But we were family, we had to stick together. Even if that meant I died or him.

The vamp's face showed shock for half a second but it disappeared so quickly I could've imagined it. Moose sat back down away from me and the vampire. I looked around for a weapon but found none. It was supposed to be detention so I didn't have my mace with me. I carry my mace everywhere, just in case. You never know what monster would jump out at you from the dark. But I left my mace at home. I should've known better.

So, I raised my fists and got in a sort of "don't mess with me or you'll get it" stance. My face was hard as I stared with hatred at the vampire who was about to attack me. To my surprise, he laughed at me! I straightened up a little and said, "What are you laughing at? I'm about to kill you."

He finally stopped laughing and said, "This is going to be so easy." Then he lunged for me. He used his stupid vamp speed that I hated. He shoved me to the side and I hit a bus seat hard. I fell in a twisted heap a few feet in front of the vampire. My body was pinning my arm painfully under me and my legs were sort of under a seat, so I couldn't really move. But there was no way I would die in a crumpled mess like this.

Everyone was staring at me in disbelief as the vampire stalked calmly over to me. But none of them moved to help me. I didn't struggle because I couldn't get up, and because that would probably make him happy. My cheek was against the floor so he gripped my chin hard enough to bruise. He then turned my head so he could see my face.

That hurt in the position I was in, but it slightly moved my arm so it wasn't as stuck anymore. If I had a distraction I could free my arm and attack. It didn't matter anymore that these people would be confused by someone talking to them in their minds.

So I sent another message to everyone except Lucy, Jake, and the vampire. I said, "Run around and cause as much commotion as you can on the count of three. Do that for a minute then get off the bus. Alright..1..2..3!"
