Chapter Two: Rescued
"Miss? Miss!" a deep voice called to me, while a big hand roughly shook my shoulder. I was tersely pulled from the comforting black grogginess of sleep, and back into the ferocious real world.
I struggled to open my heavy eyelids, finding that I only had enough energy to glance up at the person calling to me. Surroundings were fuzzy around the edges, and constantly changing colors. The person, from what I could identify, was a man. He was clearer than most things, but still a mirage; nothing about his appearance was very clear. Except for his warm brown eyes that met mine just as a cold breeze blew across my bare skin. I shivered involuntarily. Where did my clothes go?
The man, whoever he was, was hovering over me with a worried expression, a frown deeply etched into his features. His skin turned purple, black, then back to smooth tan. "Miss are you okay?" He shined a flashlight in my eyes, making me move my head away, whimpering. God, I thought. Am I in hell?
My whole body hurt, the worst coming from my thigh. Waves of stabbing pain kept me out of the darkness of sleep, making tears prick in the corners my eyes. I was a mere matter of seconds away from crying hysterically, from screaming and wailing as loud as I could, if I could muster it. My throat was already scratchy, and I could imagine that my voice was hoarse. Maybe I'd already screamed my lungs out.
I was scared. The looming thought that I was going to die became clear. I was completely at this man's mercy. Did he do this to me?
"Miss, what's your name?" the smooth voice asked me. Calm. Cool. Collected.
"Evelyn," I whispered. The mess of thoughts scrambled in my head more. My voice was scratchy, and my throat hurt. I closed my eyes as I heard the man grasp for something. I heard a loud static sound, followed by a musical chime. A walkie-talkie, that's what he had. Why did he have one of those?
"I'm going to need paramedics and backup, now," he said in a commanding tone. "We are located in the abandoned building near the mill on Francis's farm. Evelyn you need to stay with me. You're going to be okay," he soothingly whispered to me. I caught a glimpse of blonde hair when he shuffled. When does a guy ever have blonde hair and brown eyes?
Suddenly, a wave of grogginess hit me. It was a struggle to keep my eyes open. No matter how many times I tried to focus on something to stay awake, somehow my eyes would drift shut again. Was I dying? I could feel the life dripping out of me, flowing with the pool blood that covered the floor.
"I'm tired," I whispered to him. I sounded like a little kid. He put a hand on my head, brushing the hair back from my face. I tried to stay awake, but it was so hard; falling into the blackness was easy. I wanted the easy route with every fiber of my being.
"Evelyn please, stay with me," Mystery Man begged, desperateness edging into his voice. His soft touches soon turned rough as he violently shook me, trying to get me to stay awake. "Evelyn!" the man yelled.
"I'm...trying..." I slurred. I had the feeling that we both knew I wasn't trying to do anything. I felt his warm hand rest on my cheek. He was so warm; I was freezing. Soon I heard the sound of running footsteps coming from somewhere in the building.
"Paramedics are outside! They can't get in here Mr. Carter!" A woman's voice yelled. Who's this Carter guy? Is it Mystery Man?
"Why in the hell can't they get in here?" the man above me angrily growled at the woman.
"I don't know sir," the woman said in a worried tone. The man above me started muttering curse words under his breath. This whole situation felt bizarre. A building? I was in a building? When did I get in this building? Why couldn't the paramedics get in here?
I groaned when they started talking again, wishing that both of them would just go away and leave me the hell alone. They were yelling at each other too loud, debating on what to do with me. The only thing that they were accomplishing was making the throbbing pain in my head worse: It throbbed with every loud syllable.
"Fine, I'll carry her, but tell them they better be fucking ready when I get out there," the man said to her.
"Evelyn, I'm going to pick you up now. I have to get you outside and to the ambulance. Okay?" the man softly addressed to me. I slowly nodded my head in response. Sure enough, I felt strong warm arms wrap around me, cradling me to a muscular chest. "Evelyn, I'm going to take care of you. I'm not going to let anything else happen to you." I meekly nodded my head again.
Soon I felt the sway of his steps, making me feel a strong sense of protection. The smell of his cologne, subtle, yet somewhat delightful, took over my senses making me feel at home. His heart, beating faster and faster by the minute, showed how scared he actually was.
I know I should be scared, but with him holding me I felt as if I were invincible. Nothing bad could happen to me because he was here to protect me. He is a heaven sent angel. He is my protector from this horrible nightmare.
Eyes rolling back into my skull, I was engulfed in darkness. My body tensed, and I could feel the panic rising up deep in my body. I was aware that now Mystery Man started running. A cold sweat beaded down my head. Was I dying? Was this how it felt before your soul left your body?
Soon a soft, fluffy cloud was placed under my body. My freezing skin was being heated by the fabric of it.
When were clouds made out of fabric?
"It's okay Evelyn. We are all here to take care of you. You're going to be alright," A voice, probably God, whispered to me. "You just might feel a little pinch..."
"Is she okay?" Another voice said.
"Only time will tell," God replied.
Before I knew it, I drifted off into the black, blissful, obliviousness of sleep on my warm, fluffy cloud that would take my soul to Heaven's pearly gates.
