Chapter ---: Pills, Pepsi-Cola, and More News
The sun unforgivingly beat down on me, reminding me of the shameful things Colette and I did last night. We drank almost two and a half cups of that stupid Vodka Mountain Dew crap. We woke up the neighbors because we were outside screaming so loud I'm sure people on the International Space Station could hear us. Thank god her parents were heavy sleepers. We also managed to completely tear up Colette's room. Her mother was livid, and demanded to know what we were doing during the night. Colette and I both cringed in pain from the killer hangover we had. Colette easily lied and said that we decided to give her room a "makeover." Some makeover that was, I thought.
I was walking home, when my phone started ringing. I groaned in pain, trying to fight off the urge to puke. Every noise sent my head into searing pain. It felt as if my brain was trying to migrate into two pieces. I dug my phone out of my purse, reading the caller ID. Roan, it said. Great. Just great. Roan was the first person I wanted to talk to in this state. Not. I huffed, accepting the call and putting my phone up to my ear.
"Hello?" I softly asked.
"Hey Evelyn!" Roan practically screamed in my ear. I held the phone away from my ear, cringing. This was going to be interesting, I thought.
"Uh, Roan, could you take it down a notch?" I quietly asked. I really wanted to scream at him and hang up. I just needed to get home, take some pills, and go to sleep. Again.
"Huh? What? I don't understand what you mean." He replied. Of course you wouldn't. I thought. Roan wasn't exactly Sherlock Holmes.
"Stop talking so loud," I clarified. "Just, try to talk softer please? I have a huge headache."
"Uh, okay. Is this better?" he asked. He was talking softer, but it still was no use.
"Yeah, sure. Now what do you want?" I asked, clearly annoyed with him.
"I wanted to tell you that I will be at your house in literally two minutes to pick you up. We have got a lead on your case and I know you would want to come with me to check it out." Of course he wasn't wrong. I wanted to help the team; I wanted to know who did this. I just wished that the universe could have waited a day so my headache could clear up.
"Fine. But I need medication first. I have a killer headache."
"I have pills in my car," he assured. Pills in his car? I thought. I guess Roan was a party guy after all. He actually had a life.
"Don't be late," I told him before clicking the end button on my phone screen.

I saw Roans car sitting in my driveway when I rounded the corner of my street. I walked a little bit faster, knowing that I was at least five minutes late. Once I reached his shiny black car I opened the door and got in it, cursing at the door when I slammed shut very loudly behind me.
"Wow. You look like shit," he said. I snorted. I was suddenly infuriated and amused with his unexpected asshole attitude.
"You really know how to make a girl happy, don't you Carter?" I snapped back at him.
"Oh, you have no idea how happy I can make a girl be," he answered while rolling his eyes. Eww, I thought. I really didn't need to know that detail. He dug in the console of his car until he found the pill bottle. He handed them to me, while pointing to a can of Pepsi that was in a cup holder. "The Pepsi is yours. Might be a little old, but it'll be fine." I wonder how long that Pepsi has been sitting in the cup holder. I don't think I wanted to know the answer either. What a crude bastard.
"Gee, thanks," I sarcastically said.
"Hey, be happy that you have something to drink. By the looks of it you had way too much last night," he said while I was swallowing my pills with the disgusting warm pop. Did he seriously just say that to me? Or am I starting to hear things now?
"Shut up. I didn't have too much to drink last night. In fact, I didn't drink at all buddy." I lied. I could tell that Roan didn't believe me.
"Evelyn, I'm a fucking cop. I know the signs. I have been drunk many times before. You have a huge fucking hangover," He said while pulling out of my driveway and into the street.
"And if I do?" I asked. "You have no room to talk considering you have a full pill bottle in the console of your car!"
"I'm twenty one, I'm allowed to party, drink a lot of alcohol, and have pills in my car. You, on the other hand, are a minor. You're not supposed to be drinking; it's against the law." He's right, my brain told me. Shut the hell up, I thought. He has no proof that I was drinking, plus last night was just a night to let go and forget about everything. I needed a night to relax. It's not like I was going to get shit faced so bad that I don't even know my own name every single night.
"I just needed to relax for a little while. And by the way, only a party animal keeps pills in their car Roan."
"You have no idea how much of a party animal I can be," he replied smirking. He was driving the speed limit, how goody goody and...cop-ish... of him.
"I'm going to pretend that I didn't hear a word of what you just said." I told him. Wait a second, he's twenty one? Holy shit. "You're only twenty one?" I blurted.
"Yep. That took a while before you caught that. Why? Did I look younger?" he teased. I mentally kicked myself in the butt. Why did I have to blurt that question out? God, sometimes I was so slow. It took that long for me to realize that Roan had said he was twenty one.
"No, I pegged you as at least twenty six," I honestly answered. But you act like you're fifty-seven, I mentally added.
"Ouch that hurts Evelyn," he said holding a hand over his heart. "I'm wounded." Too bad I don't care, I thought.
"Sorry," I shrugged. After that an awkward silence hung in the air, threatening to choke me. It was so strange sitting in the car with him. He stared at the road ahead, not making any effort to make small talk. Fine, be that way you dick, I thought. Any other day he would want to talk my ear off, but I guess he didn't want to today.
I unlocked my phone only to find that I had absolutely no messages. The only time I wanted Colette to text me, and she doesn't. My own mother wouldn't even answer me. That was saying something. Although my mother and I had talked yesterday afternoon after the incident had occurred, she said that she and my father couldn't come home. Both she and my father had to stay for Aunt Meredith. I understood, but felt that my current situation was a little bit more important. But I didn't say anything about that to my mother. I just told her to tell Aunt Meredith that I said hello and that I loved her. After what seemed like forty hours of riding in the dead silent car, I decided to break the icy silence.
"Where are we going?" I casually asked Roan.
"We are going back to the station first. They have new information and possibly a lead on this person, like I said earlier," he responded. A possible lead, I thought. I was getting closer to finding the truth.
"Okay. Can't you tell me some of it now?" I impatiently asked him. He didn't even blink before answering.
"No. Cory and Melisa know all of the details, I only know very few."
"Oh. Okay." More awkward silence consumed us. If Colette was here she would smack me over the head with a chair. Talk to him, she would say. Make a damn move Evelyn, she would encourage. Never in a million years, I thought.
Finally Roan's car pulled into the driveway at the station. Thank the lord! That was the longest car ride of my life. I quickly bounced out of the car, heading for the door of the police station. I stopped myself before going inside the building. Did I really want to go inside there? Did I really want to know the details? Did I really want to rehash every detail of the other day and try to remember more of that night? I wasn't sure. But I knew that I had to face it sooner or later, so it may as well be sooner. I firmly gripped the door, pulling it open, and walked inside with Roan close on my heels.
