Chapter ----: Girl's Night Out...
I was sitting Indian style on the bumper of a police officer Cory Roenoke's car, listening to Roan practically rip off Officer Woodley's -Ooops, I mean Michelle's- head off. Cory glanced over at the screaming Roan, cringed, then proceeded to go back to jingling with his car keys. How awkward Corey must feel, I thought. It seemed as if the whole town was lined up on the sidewalk and street, watching the police invade my home. Roan had practically told the whole police department to "come to the Raven's house immediately, or else." I don't think I wanted to know what the or else was.
"He seems pretty messed up about all of this," Cory suddenly said, gesturing over to Roan. Unlike Roan, Cory Roenoke had dull grey eyes and reddish brownish hair. He was nice, not smug and dickish like Roan could be. Corey also had a slight twang to his voice, making me suspect that he had come from somewhere down south. I would guess some place like Georgia or Alabama.
"Yeah, he has been freaky ever since we got out of the house," I mumbled, too fascinated with the dingy shoelace of my converse. I only had enough time to snatch up a pair of converse before Roan urgently ushered me out of the house. I looked ridiculous in my clothes, but I don't think anyone seemed to notice my un-matching attire. They were too busy wondering what had happened inside this seemingly peaceful house. Too busy wondering what had happened to the Poor Raven Girl again.
"He's very into his job sometimes. This case just became personal with the intrusion and attack. But what about you? Are you okay?" He asked. Ah, if only he knew the truth.
"Uh, yeah. I'm fine, I think." I lied. Fine my ass. I was getting better at saying I was fine when I really wasn't. Right now I felt so scared and helpless. I was terrified knowing that I was never safe, no matter where I was or who I was with. I was horrified for my parents. It was scary that even the police couldn't stop this person. Despite everything I felt right now, I was determined to tell everyone I was fine; I wouldn't let them see my world crumble around me. I would save all of the crying and sobbing for my pillow at night.
"Okay..." Cory said. I could tell that he didn't believe me, but he didn't press it any further. I don't think he wanted to press the button with me. He was probably worried that I would break down. Cory didn't seem like the type of guy who was comfortable with consoling crying girls.
I continued to pick at my shoelace, wondering why Roan was being such a jerk to Melisa. Melisa was-well seemed like- a good person. She seemed like the type of woman who took her work seriously, and she worked hard at it. She acted like she usually didn't take orders from anybody...or at least she seemed like the type of person who wasn't easily bossed around. But then again, I didn't know her very well, so my judgement could be a bit off. She was bossed around by Roan.
"Evelyn! Evelyn!" I heard someone shout. I looked over at the sea of people, only to find Colette sprinting towards me. She must have just found out about what had happened.
"Colette!" I yelled, jumping off of the car and running towards her. I ignored Cory's yells and protests, continuing to make my way towards her. "What in the world are you doing here? Are you freaking crazy? This is a crime scene investigation!" I asked when I reached her.
"I....just...found...out," she gasped. You would think after all of those years in track and cross country she would be used to running moderate distances.
"You're, like, the last person to find out," I mentioned.
"Yes...I know. I was wondering...if you...were okay." She looked genuinely concerned for me.
"I'm fine," I lied. Since when did I start lying to my best friend? Wow, it was such a low blow.
"C'mon Evelyn. You may be able to lie and fool everyone else but you can't fool me. I'm your best friend, I know you a million times better than these assholes. Now tell me, are you really okay?" As much as I hate to admit it, she was right. She did know me better than anyone else, so it was virtually impossible to lie to her.
"No I'm not fine. How can I be with everything that has happened?" She gave me a sympathetic look. She slung her arm around my shoulders, making me almost smile. Key word: Almost.
"I think you are taking it better than I would. There is a reason why my mother says you are the logical one and I'm the one who just freaks out about every minute problem. Now, where's that hunk cop of yours? I need to speak with him." She smiled, attempting to get my mind off of things.
"Hunk?" I asked confused. Who was she talking about? Surely she wasn't talking about Roan...
"That cute ass body guard of yours. Oh, what's his name? I think it's Randy? Or maybe it's Randolf?" I mentally groaned, of course she was talking about Roan.
"You mean Roan?" I asked in a duh voice.
"Yes! Roan? That's a sexy name!" Oh god, here she goes. She obviously has a liking towards Roan. I better warn him later, she will stop at nothing now. Colette has already started the pursuit for him.
"Oh god Colette! He's like, way older than us!"
"Shut up! He's like, a few years older than us! Anyways, we will talk about him later, right now I need to know where he is at!" I rolled my eyes, knowing she would make me talk about him later.
"He is over by Officer Melisa Woodley." I said.
"Okay. Now you stay right here, while I go talk to that Roan guy."
"Woof, woof!" I responded, mocking a dog. "Don't worry, I'll stay like good dog."
"Good!" she chirped. I watched as Colette scampered off towards Melisa and Roan. I watched as she batted her eyes at Roan, obviously asking for something. He nodded in response and quickly scrawled something a piece of paper. He then handed it to her. Colette gave him one of her signature I'm-hitting-on-you-dumbass smiles before walking back over to me. Her smile widened even more when she saw me watching her and Roan.
"Your bae wanted me to give this to you," she teased, holding out a piece of paper. Wasn't this the piece of paper that Roan was holding just moments ago?
"He's not my bae," I gritted through my teeth, grabbing the paper. The paper had a number scrawled on it in sloppy chicken scratch, along with an even messier capital R signed at the bottom. Well, I suppose my suspicion has been confirmed. I scrunched my eyebrows up in confusion. "What's this? His number?"
"Duh Evelyn! Could you be any more of a twit? He said that if you need anything, anything at all, give him a call," Colette said in a low voice while winking at me.
I sighed deeply as she giggled, lightly pushing me. "Lighten up! If I were you, I would be jumping up and down in an untainted state of pleasure."
"I don't like him like that Colette. I don't think I even like him at all. He's very annoying sometimes," I told her. "Actually, I'm pretty sure I have a strong indifference towards him. And besides, I'm me and he's him. He would never like a girl like me."
"Could you be anymore oblivious? He DOES like you! You're just too naive to see it you're your own eyes."
I rolled my eyes. "You are so wrong Colette."
"Yeah right girl. Well anyways, I asked him if we could have a girl's night out, because I know how you have to have permission to go places or whatever. Roan only said yes to the girl's night out because the police have to clean the house and get some more evidence for the file. So it looks like you're staying with your amazing best friend for the night!"
"I don't need permission to do things," I argued, crossing my arms in front of my chest. That was the only thing I comprehended from Colette's spiel. Please, I don't have a babysitter.
"Like hell you don't! I had to give a very elaborate list of tonight. Roan had to know everything that we are planning on doing tonight before he would even consider letting you come!" she retorted.
"What? That doesn't make any sense. He has no power over me, he can't tell me what to do." I sat there and thought for a minute. "Yep, I definitely hate him now. It's official."
"Hahaha whatever. Now come along little one. We have movies and ice cream awaiting us! Then shopping!" Colette declared.
"Colette,"
"What?" she asked in annoyance.
"You are so weird. Did I ever tell you that by chance?"
"Shut up Raven. I know where you sleep."
