Chapter -----: A Corpse in the Wrong Grave
"Here he is. Fucking finally," Corey groaned. Roan and Corey had been digging up the grave for nearly three hours, while Michelle and I sat down in the soft grass talking about whatever sparked our interest in the moment. Needless to say, we didn't serve much help in the situation of digging up some dead dude's casket.
"Is it really him?" I doubtfully asked. "Is he really. . . . . In there?"
"Pssshhh, of course he's not in there," Corey sarcastically said. "We just spent the last few hours digging up some random-ass casket in the middle of a fucking grave yard because we fucking felt like it Evelyn!" I glared at him, trying to look threatening.
"Okay dick. You don't have to be such a cock sucker about it, fucker!" I yelled. Since when did I ever use the word cock sucker or fucker? Those were both terms that Corey had been frequently using while digging up the casket. The realization that Corey's sour attitude must be rubbing off on me hit me like a stack of bricks. That's not a good thing at all. In fact, it made me even more irritated than before.
"Guys, chill out," Roan intervened. He gave me a pleading look. I knew that he wanted me to drop the argument and just ignore Corey. But why was Corey being such a little bitch? I didn't do anything to him! He just needs to chill the fucking hell out or leave. I mean, I understand that he's been digging up a grave for most of the day, but like that wasn't that bad! I knew that it was in the teams best interest to drop the whole thing, shake it off, and continue with the case. So that's what I did, deciding that later I was going to plan his karma. Karma was a bigger bitch than me, after all.
"Okay, fine," I surrendered. Roan sighed a breath of relief, looking slightly less rigid than before. His warm brown eyes met mine, giving me doubtful look.
"Are you sure you guys are ready for this? We have no idea what we are gunna find in here," I knew that he had intended for the question to be directed towards everyone, but by the way he was looking at me, I could tell that he was on concerned about me. Was I really ready for this? The truth was no. I wasn't ready to see a dead body, gory or not, but I had to stick it out and prove to them that I'm not totally weak.
"Yes," lying was getting easier, becoming more second nature to me. This skill could be a tool, or it could be the weapon leading to my ruin. I really hoped it wasn't the second one.
"Okay, well, the seal on the casket should already be broken because he got into it once before. So it shouldn't be all that hard to open." Roan was all about business. "On the count of three."
"One," Michelle said.
"Two," Corey choked out.
"Three," Roan whispered.
Roan slowly opened the creaky casket lid, while all of us waited with anticipation. The first thing that revealed itself to us was the white silk linning inside of the casket. Then we saw the edge of a classy business suit, gray with a blue strip around the hand. Then we saw the unmistakable smear of blood.
I looked at Michelle, her face mirroring mine. We were both confused.
With a puzzled look, Roan continued to open the casket, painfully slow I might add. As the lid fully opened, we were all shocked at what it contained.
Inside the casket there wasn't a neatly preserved dead body by the name of Rick Saban, that would just be too easy for the story. Instead, in his place was a girl, a girl who looked to be about my age. It took me a few seconds, but then it finally clicked. I know her, I mean, I knew her. There was a dead girl that I knew, that was my ex best friend, laying here dead. She was found in a dead man's grave, and she was covered in blood.
