Green Gates

The group conversed as they continued down the yellow brick road. The sun had just passed midday. Carter look over at Felix, studying he way he moved. He didn't appear to have any bones, or for that matter, any muscles. He moved very fluidly, with no visible joints. His entire leg seemed to bend and flex as he stepped onto the golden bricks. Carter wanted to ask what it felt like, and had discussed this quietly with Otto recently and they come to the conclusion that it would be a bit insensitive.

They decided to take a rest and eat some of their leftover corn. Carter looked down at Otto munching happily on his cob. It reminded him of before the fireplace, when he would feed his cat potato chips. He looked over at Felix, who was staring forlornly at the twins eating the corn. Carter held out a cob. Felix shook his head and held up his palms.
"Do-" Carter swallowed his mouthful of corn. "Do you have to eat?"
Felix shook his head, causing his hat to flop around in the air. "No. Not anymore."
The two shared a nod and Carter resumed his piece of corn.

The road beneath Carters feet glimmered in the sunlight. He wondered what he would do once he got to the Emerald City. Who would be there? What would he say? He didn't really know what was in Oz. He had never read The Wizard Of Oz, despite being a major bookworm. He had seen the movie once or twice, but never really paid attention. If he'd known he was coming he would have done some research. He knew the basic story of course, Dorothy, brain, heart courage and that. Then again, he thought Captain Hook was a villainous pirate. Carter smirked at the thought of his own party as they travelled through Oz. Georgia looked at him.
"What you grinning at England?" She asked. Carter grinned even wider. "I have a name you know," he said. She raised her eyebrow.
"It's Carter."
Georgia thought about it for a moment. "You know what," she said, "England suits you better."
The twins began to joke around again. The outline of a city appeared in the distance, surrounded by a tall emerald wall.

The bricks beneath their feet transitioned from gold, to yellow, to lime, to green, and then finally to the same emerald as the wall that surrounded the city. The large, green wooden gates loomed overhead as they continued. Carter turned to Felix.
"How do they get everything green?"
The scarecrow shrugged his shoulders. "No idea."
Carter felt small around Felix, despite the fact they were the same age. He wondered if this was how he looked before he was a scarecrow. He was tall and lanky. His legs were disproportionate to his body, and his arms hung down where his knees would be. He he was very odd. Carter came to realise that there wasn't much that wasn't.

The five approached the gates. Large bronze letters shone across the the green wooden doors.
"Oz." Otto read aloud. "Told you."
Carter shook his head. Otto hadn't let go of the fact that he hadn't believed him. He took a step towards the doors. Two pole-axes crossed I front of him. Carter stepped back from the door.
"No one goes in without permission." Said the guards, standing tall on either side of the door.
Carter panicked. "We were just in there." He blurted out. "I just needed to get my jacket."
He had seen that excuse used countless times in movies and TV, so he doubted it would work. The to guards looked at each other, nodded, and moved their axes. The guard he had talked to before looked down at him.
"Alright, in you go, the lot of you." The other guard opened the gates. Carter nodded to the others, a bemused expression on his face, and they walked in behind him.

Carter turned around to see the gates close. A large orange mass flew towards him. Georgia smashed into him, embracing him in a hug. Felix ruffled his head as he walked past, and Fiona punched his arm.
"Nice excuse." she said. Georgia let go of him.
"We'll make a criminal out of you yet England." She said. She walked down the road to join the others. Carter stood, rooted to the spot. Otto walked past him.
"Get in there, buddy, do me proud."
Carter hurried to catch up to him. "Look, I-I didn't, I don't, you know, uh-" he stopped. He couldn't win the fight. He sighed. "Whatever."
